short, but can continue with many friends at the same time for hours. They can start and stop
chatting all evening. They think that playing online games is also a way of communicating with

1. A: How about trying an extreme sport?
B: I _ _ _ _ _ _ _ doing safe sports such as trekking or swimming.
a. Would you like to try scuba diving? b. What are some other underwater sports?
An Amazing Experience
Scuba diving is a great way to explore nature. Scuba stands for
self-containing underwater breathing apparatus. It is possible to
breathe underwater with diving equipment. Marine life can
amaze you with its beauty. The feeling of freedom and getting lost
among the waves will give you an unforgettable experience. Scuba diving,
of course, comes with its dangers; running out of air, touching something
poisonous, or a possible shark attack. Last year, I went to Kaş, Antalya to dive.
It was fascinating to be underwater because the colors of the seaweed and the fish were all amazing.
I tried to touch the fish but they were scared and ran away. It was a completely different world. It was not
like the world we see every day. It was peaceful and silent. The only sound I could hear was the sound of my
heartbeat. Everything was perfect at the beginning, but after 20 minutes I saw a barracuda. I know that it is a
dangerous species. Luckily, I stayed calm and escaped slowly. However, I am not sure that I want to go scuba diving
again.
B. Look at the highlighted words in the text and match them with their definitions.
1. Explore a) a large tropical sea fish with sharp teeth.
2. Unforgettable b) a substance that can make people or animals ill or kill them.
3. Poisonous c) to search and discover.

We don’t have wings to fly, but we can still get a bird’s eye view of things by hopping in a hot air balloon.

18. Read the text below and decide if the statements are True or False.
When your children are young, you can give them chores to show that members of a family work together at
home and that mum is not the cleaning woman. Also, responsibility makes teenagers trust themselves more.
They believe that they can succeed. Teens should be responsible for doing their homework, cleaning their
own room, and cleaning up after their studies. When they are totally responsible for their work, you
can give them other responsibilities in the other parts of the house.
What Chores are for Teenagers?
Eating&Food Preparation: Preparing the ingredients; setting and clearing the table,
serving and cleaning-up.
House Cleaning: Cleaning their own rooms, other parts of the house that the teen uses,
especially the bathroom.
Laundry: Washing and drying the clothes, folding and putting away.
Outside the House: Taking out the pet, washing the car, cleaning their bikes, taking the garbage out.
True False
1. Teens can do all types of chores including ironing.
2. Setting and cleaning the table are proper for teenagers.
3. Teens don’t have to be responsible for doing homework.
4. When they are younger, teens should do outdoor tasks.
5. ‘Mother’ is not the cleaning woman in families; we should share the chores.

11. Read the text about the great inventions and try to guess the meaning of the underlined words.
Today, we live in a world of high-tech devices as a result of fast innovations and discoveries. But if we think about the
background of the achievements, most of them are advances of devices in the past. Transportation, communication, and
information exchange follow the same route that dates back hundreds of years. Let’s look at some of the greatest inventions that
revolutionized history:
1. The Wheel (3500 BC)
The first invention that changed the future of mankind was the invention of the wheel. Whether it is to travel or to carry goods,
the invention of the wheel made it easier than ever before.
2. The Compass (206 BC) – The Pathfinder
Compass was one of the most important tools that helped mankind explore the world. The Chinese invented it to tell the future,
but its scope in travel and navigation was realized only in the 11th century AD.
3. Waterwheel (50 BC)
Waterwheels aren’t considered as important inventions. But let’s not forget about the first invention that helped mankind to
generate power from sources other than humans and animals.
4. Calendar (45 BC)
The modern calendar did not come into use until the 1600s. There were many forms of calendars to fill in for a unified system.
Egyptians used the solar calendar. Then, Julius Caesar brought the Julian calendar with 12 months. But, it had a major flaw
because it was wrong by 11 minutes. Pope Gregory XIII introduced the modern Gregorian calendar in 1582.
5. Clock (AD 725) – the First Mechanical Clock
The Egyptians and the Chinese used water clocks to keep track of time. The first mechanical clock was made by Yi Xing of China
in AD 725.

• The second source of information for scientific news is social media. People share interesting
discoveries and inventions and learn about the news. Almost 25% of people get information
through social networking sites.
• Television and newspapers are also sources of science, technology news, and information
in 2016. Nearly 15% of Americans listen to the news to learn about innovations. They
hardly ever read newspapers or magazines to follow the developments. The rate of the
readers is only 10%.

Welcome to the Daily Matters on Universal Channel. Environmental scientist Carl Barkley is our guest today.
Reporter: Carl, I want to talk to you about the natural forces. What are your predictions about the possible disasters in
future?
Carl Barkley: I think the most important problem is global warming.
Reporter: What is global warming?
Carl Barkley: It is climate change, a rise of the Earth’s temperature. Our planet is heating up fast.
Reporter: What are the causes and effects of global warming?
Carl Barkley: Humans caused the warming by cutting down trees and releasing heat-trapping gases. Glaciers are melting and
sea levels are rising. It is causing a set of changes to the Earth’s climate.
Reporter: Can we do anything to slow down or stop this warming?
Carl Barkley: We should use public transportation, recycle products not to finish natural resources, and plant more trees.
I think TV channels can hold campaigns against global warming. What do you think?
Reporter: I agree with you. I will start a campaign soon. I hope you can visit our channel soon after the campaign starts.
