The Vietnam war

1a)The American governments were sure that China and USSR were planning to spread
communism to countries in Asia.The anti-communist President Kennedy had been warry
getting more deeply involved in Vietnam.He supported Ngo Dinh Diem to take back
Vietnam since they were both bitterly anti-communists and did not want Vietnam to
become Communist under Ho Chi Minh.He also assisted with advisors who helped to
organize the South Vietnam army To fight the Viet Cong.

b)It should be noted that the terms of the cease fire ,elections were to be held within
two years to reunite the country therefore to stop /prevent the elections from taking
place and communist from winning Johnson had to escalate in war

He knew.that their technology and fire was superior to Viet Congo and they believed
that would actually allow them to win the war and spread Capitalism in Vietnam.In 1964
the North Vietnamese gunboats coast .In response Johnson massively increased
American involvement by sending hundreds of thousands of young American soldiers to
fight in Vietnam.

The Americans policy was a strange combination of determination and ingnorance.

Johnson was determined to resist the spread of Communism in Vietnam.The idea once
Vietnam falls to Communism then Laos,Thailand and Burna and possibly India might
fall just like a row of dominoes caused Johnson to escalate in war.

c)After being the American President,Nixon worked to end the US involvement in

Vietnam.It was in 1968 when Richard Nixon was elected President.He and his National
security advisor Henry Kissenger worked tirelessly to end U.S involvement in
Vietnam.Because of the casualties of the U.S troops and the loss America was facing,
Nixon had to withdraw soldiers from Vietnam for his own country’s benefit but
However to a larger extent he was very genuine on seeking peace with the North
Vietnam.

President Nixon set about negotiating a peaceful end to conflict having made an
election promise of ending the conflict.Nixon had claimed that he wanted to find “peace
with honour” and set about removing Americans in war.Therefore he persuaded a policy
called “Vietnamese “whereby the South Vietnamese would be supported with with
materials and money by the Amerivans but the fighting would be done by the South
Vietnamese army.This meant that American soldiers were being withdrawn from
Vietnam.
Moreover from early 1969 ,Kissenger had regular meetings with the chief Vietnamese
peace negotiator,Le Due Tho which showed that he was willing to end war and seek for
peace.He also improved relations with the communist members,the USSR and
China.Nixon knew that one day South Vietnam would fall into the Communist hands
therefore he tried to seek peace.

However,in as much as we say Nixon negotiated peace with the North Vietnamese,it
was not only peaceful methods he used in his efforts to end the war.He increased
bombing campaigns to show that he was not wea.U.S and South Vietnamesetroops also
invaded Viet Congo bases in Cambodia ,causing outrage across the world and even in the
USA although the bombing failed.He escalated into the war instead of seeking for
peace as promised which led to demonstrations in America.

In the end a peace treaty was signed in 1973 in Paris.Once American support
ended ,there was a brief truce before fighting broke out again ,this time without
American involvement.North Vietnam conquered South Vietnam in 1973.
