COURSE OBJECTIVES – READING

• To identify key information in a short informative text


• To summarise key factual information in a text
• To predict the content of a text from visual information
• To identify and use signposting language for describing a process
Writing
• To understand the wording of academic writing tasks
• To generate ideas for writing
• To develop a writing plan
• To analyse and write topic sentences, essay introduction
• To evaluate an essay introduction
SPEAKING
• To take part in a discussion, and exchange ideas and opinions
• To summarise and report back on a discussion
• To present visual information
• To participate in a tutorial discussion
• To give a short presentation
• To respond to requests for further details
LISTENING
• To understand the introduction and organisation of a lecture
• To understand and make notes about the main idea or points in a lecture
• To analyse types of supporting sentences
• To take notes on a description of a process
VOCABULARY
• To use vocabulary which are useful and suitable to the context

• To look at key aspects of academic vocabulary using content


from articles in the lessons

• To be familiarised with the most useful vocabulary-learning strategies


LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Read a range of authentic texts (C1, A2)

• Listen to lectures, presentations and interviews (C1, A1)

• Use proper academic vocabulary and grammar


to prepare different essay types (C2, A1)

• Follow discussions in a group (A1)


THE RELEVANCE OF THE SUBJECT
EAP I is a course that aims to equip students with the necessary language and academic skills for
them to succeed in their main academic courses for tertiary education.

As such, students would be taught to:


a) utilise appropriate listening skills in a variety of academic situations
b) present ideas effectively in group discussions as well as oral presentations
c) apply strategies for meaningful reading and responding to new information and ideas
d) share opinion and ideas effectively in a written form
