Appendix A
Titles

1. Alternating Current (AC) versus Direct Current (DC)

Prologue: There was once a war, not war between nations but a battle between
electric currents. Extreme public demonstrations were shown just to prove their
type of current was superior. Alternating current won the war as it was used until
today to distribute electrical energy. Direct current might lose the war but it stayed
as the main electrical energy to power the age of electronics.

You will have to explore the story of this "war", the differences between AC
and DC, applications, and your opinion about the future of AC and DC.

2. Hot and Cold

Prologue: During a hot day, it will be best going to an air-conditioned room or

getting a cold drink from the fridge. Heat always moves spontaneously from region
of high temperature to region of low temperature. When a car is parked under the
sun, the inside of the car, when it is initially cooled, will eventually get hot as heat
travels into it to achieve equilibrium. In order to keep a place cold, extra work is
needed to pump the heat away.

You may either choose your focus on an air-conditioner or refrigerator.

Then, please describe about its invention, explain the mechanism of
pumping heat away, and explore its commercial and industrial
applications. At the end, you may share your vision on the future of air-
conditioner or refrigerator.

3. Medical Eyes

Prologue: Diagnosis plays a major part in medicine. In order to find out what is
wrong with a patient, medical personnel have to explore the inside of a body
without cutting it up. Ours eyes are not the only tool to “see” and visible light is not
the only option. There are different imagery tools for various purposes and to “see”
our body differently. The advancement of medical imagery saves a lot of life.

Let X-ray to be the main focus. You will have to dig up the history of the
invention, explain the mechanism, describe the specific applications,
discuss about the advantages and disadvantages, and express your
opinion about the future of the medical imagery that you chose.

4. Electrical Juice

Prologue: Electricity is essential in keeping the world running. Mankind had

discovered various ways to harvest electrical energy, from solar energy to nuclear
energy. What if we can “store” electricity for later use when we need it, just like
storing water in a water tank? Enter the battery that powers your gadgets for long
period of time and capacitor that supplies power boost.

You will have to explore the history of electrochemical cell and capacitor,
elaborate on the mechanism of storing electrical energy for each device,
and also their applications. Express your own views about the futures of
both of them.

5. Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

(L.A.S.E.R.)

Prologue: Atoms absorbed photons from a light source, raising the atoms’
electrons to a higher energy state. Excited atoms emit photons in random
directions as they spontaneously drop back to their stable energy state. The
photons are repeatedly absorbed and released by atoms. As the number of
photons increases rapidly, a stream of photons emerges as a laser beam.

You will have to explore the history of this invention, explain the mechanism,
describe several types of lasers and the applications, and express your
view on the future of laser.

6. Nuclear Story

Prologue: “I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” The story started from
the discovery of radioactivity where energetic rays and particles were spewed
naturally from the nucleus of the atom. Soon, human found a way to control the
emission of such rays and particles. Splitting the nucleus produced large amount
of energy and mankind tried to harness the energy, either for destruction or
creation. Instead of splitting the atomic nucleus, mankind also discovered a whole
new level of energy from fusing the atomic nuclei. It is just a thin fine line between
peace and war. Mankind benefited from the wonder of atom especially in medicine
and energy production. However, mankind was fear of the destructive power of
nuclear energy.

You have to look back in time when radioactivity was discovered and tell
a story about its discovery. You shall describe the applications of
radioactivity and how energy was produced from splitting or fusing of
nuclei. With such vast amount of energy, does nuclear energy poses a
threat to mankind’s future or leads human civilization to the next level? You
also include a good perspective about radiation level to the public.

7. Light Emitting Diode (L.E.D.)

Prologue: Thomas Edison was famous for his invention of practical incandescent
lamp using carbon filament. As long as there is electricity, the incandescent lamp
can provide long lasting light source. However, most of the electrical energy is
converted into heat while only a small portion of energy is for light. Simply
speaking, it is a very inefficient device for the purpose of lighting. When
semiconductors came into the world to start the electronic revolution, a humble
diode may be replacing conventional incandescent lamp in the future. As we can
observe now, incandescent lamp is slowly being phased out and replaced by
energy efficient lighting like light emitting diode (LED) and compact fluorescent
ligh. This time most of the electrical energy goes to light but LED requires
sophisticated electronic circuit to keep it running.

You shall briefly explore different methods of generating light followed by

the description of historical development of LED. Then, you are to
elaborate on the mechanism of LED generating light from electricity,
compare between LED and incandescent lamp, show some applications
of LED and describe the advantages and disadvantages of LED. Do you
think that LED will dominate the lighting technology in the near future?

8. Wireless Wonder

Prologue: When you need to power up any electrical appliances, you need cables
connected from the appliances to power sockets. Cables and wires are running
at every corner just to deliver electrical energy and signals. As portable electronic
devices, like smartphones, become part of life, charging adapters are essential to
keep the devices charged up all the time. Wireless charging station is slowly
taking over conventional adapters where electrical energy can be transferred to
the devices without the need of cables. Transferring electrical energy wirelessly
is not a new technology. In fact, the technology was demonstrated almost one
century ago and it was ahead of its time back then.

The main idea is about electromagnetic induction. You have to briefly

explore the history of wireless power transfer with Nikola Tesla. Then, discuss
about the working mechanism of wireless transfer of electrical energy.
What do you see on the future of wireless transfer of electrical energy?
