The capacitance of a parallel-plate capacitor in vacuum changes from 200 mF to 500 mF when
a dielectric is inserted into the capacitor. What is the dielectric constant of the dielectric?
𝜀0 𝐴 𝜀𝑟 𝜀0 𝐴
𝐶0 = = 200 × 10−3 𝐶1 = = 𝜀𝑟 𝐶0

The figure below shows a network of five capacitors, each of capacitance 40 μF. Determine the
total capacitance between 𝐴 and 𝐵.

Top capacitor in series: Bottom capacitor in series:

1 1 1 1 1 1
= + = +
𝐶1 40μ 40μ 𝐶2 40μ 40μ

𝐶1 𝐶2
𝐶1 = 20 μF 𝐶2 = 20 μF
Total capacitance:
𝐶 = 20μ + 40μ + 20μ = 80μ

In the circuit diagram below, find the voltage and charge of capacitor 𝐶3 .

Total capacitance:

= + =
𝐶 120μ 10μ + 30μ 30μ
𝐶 = 30 μF

Total charge:
𝑄 = 𝐶Δ𝑉 = (30 × 10−6 )(12) = 3.6 × 10−4 C

Voltage Δ𝑉1 on capacitor 𝐶1 : Voltage Δ𝑉2,3 on capacitor 𝐶1 and 𝐶2 :

𝑄1 = 𝑄 = 𝐶1 Δ𝑉1 Δ𝑉2,3 = 12 − 3.0 = 9.0 V
3.6 × 10−4 = (120 × 10−6 )Δ𝑉1
Δ𝑉1 = 3.0 V

Voltage on capacitor 𝐶3 : Charge on capacitor 𝐶3 :
