(b) Cylindrical fuel rods in a nuclear reactor generate heat. The source of heat per unit
volume within a long cylindrical rod can be modelled as a scalar field S. The heat flow
within the rod can be modelled as a vector field J.~ The two fields are related by the
~
equation ∇ · J = S. Given
 p 
xpx2 + y 2
~ y, z) =  y x2 + y 2 
J(x,

(c) Find the THIRD component of the curl of J(x, ~ y, z) given in part (b), i.e. the compo-
nent of curl in the z direction. Is the value of the third component of ∇ × J~ enough
information to determine if the field J is irrotational? Justify your answer.

Note: you should NOT find the first and second components of curl when answering
this question. (3 marks)

Question 5 (11 marks)

(a) An oil field is located beneath the surface of a flat plain. The distance to the surface
(in kilometres) is given by the function:
f (x, y) = 5 + (x − 1)2 + (x + y)2
Petroleum engineers want to drill down the shortest distance possible to reach the oil.
(i) Determine the stationary point of f (x, y) to find a candidate point where they
might be advised to drill. (3 marks)
(ii) Classify the stationary point found in (i), if possible. Would you advise drilling
there? (3 marks)
