Effectiveness of Organic Corrosion Inhibitor under chloride attack in

reinforced concrete.

ABSTRACT
This study was divided into two stages. Stage one was designed to investigate the effect of
Organic Corrosion Inhibitors (OCI) (Sika Ferrogard®-901) on the properties of fresh and hardened
concrete with a w/c ratio of 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6. The result shows that the workability increased with
the addition of OCI. The compressive strength of concrete decreased with the addition of OCI to
w/c of 0.4 and 0.5. The addition of OCI does not affect the compressive strength for w/c of 0.6. The
tensile strength of the control specimen was higher than that of Sika Ferrogard®-901. In general, the
permeability of concrete with organic corrosion inhibitor was less than that of the reference
concrete.

Stage two of this research investigated, the effect of two types of organic corrosion inhibitors on
the mechanical and transport properties of concrete. One is added to the concrete mix (Sika Ferrogard®-
901), and the other is applied to the concrete surface (Sika Ferrogard®-903). The properties of the fresh
and hardened and transportable concrete were evaluated. From the results, it was found that the effect
of the organic inhibitor (Sika Ferrogard®-901) was clear on the properties of fresh concrete. The
workability increased with the addition of organic corrosion inhibitors. At all ages, the effect of OCI on
compressive strength and porosity was insignificant. As for the permeability test, both samples
containing Sika Ferrogard®-901 and Sika Ferrogard®-903 outperformed the control sample. Both types
of organic inhibitors affected the diffusion and capillary absorption of concrete. In addition, this research
aimed to investigate the compressive strength and water penetration resistance of concrete under
exposure to the wet-dry cycles. Corrosion potential and carbonation tests were also performed. The
concentration of NaCl solution affects the compressive strength of concrete (C) under exposure to wet-
dry cycles. Ferrogard-901 has reduced the effect of chloride solution on both the compressive strength
and water permeability of samples exposed to wet and dry conditions. For the sample (OS) where sika
Ferrogard-903 was applied to surface concrete, the influence of the NaCl solution on compressive
strength was negligible under exposure to wet and dry cycles. At exposure to a 3.5% NaCl solution, both
Ferrogard®-901 and Ferrogard®-903 reduced the corrosion potential of OS and OA samples with nearly
equal efficacy, but not for an extended period of time. However, in the case exposed to wet-dry cycles
in a 5% NaCl solution, both Ferrogard®-901 and Ferrogard®-903 had their efficiency decrease. The
inhibitors applied to the surface outperformed the inhibitors added to the concrete mix in the resistance
to carbonation.
