RASHTRAPATI BHAVAN INTERIORS
Rashtrapati Bhavan
➔ Rashtrapati Bhavan, home to the President of the world’s largest democracy, epitomizes India’s strength, its democratic traditions and
secular character.
➔ Rashtrapati Bhavan was the creation of architects of exceptional imagination and masterfulness, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert
Baker. It was Sir Lutyens who conceptualized the H shaped building, covering an area of 5 acres on a 330 acre estate. This mansion
has a total of 340 rooms spread over four floors, 2.5 kilometres of corridors and 190 acres of garden area.
➔ The first restoration project at the Rashtrapati Bhavan was started in 1985 and ended in 1989, during which the Ashoka Hall was
stripped of its later additions and restored to its original state by the architectural restorer Sunita Kohli. The second restoration project,
begun in 2010, involved Charles Correa and Sunita Kohli.

Ashok Hall

Stone paneling on walls, and unique design of paneling oil paintings on ceiling.

Ashok Hall was restored by Sunita Kohli in 2010. The Ashok Hall is used for presentation of credentials by Heads of
Missions of foreign countries and as a formal place of introductions for the
visiting and Indian delegations prior to the commencement of the State
Banquets hosted by the President.
Durbar Hall
The grand simplicity of Rashtrapati Bhavan Durbar Hall is enthralling as it is indisputably the most regal room of the presidential
palace. The 42 feet high walls are cased in white marble. The dome is said to be 22 metres in diameter and 25 metres above the
ground. The double dome feature with an oculus in the centre of the dome floods the Durbar Hall with sunlight, highlighting its features.
An exquisite Belgium glass chandelier decorates the Durbar Hall as it hangs from a height of 33 meters from its ceiling.

There are four apses, two on the western side and two on the eastern side that have coffered vaults, the archivolts of which cut into the
dome. The Durbar Hall is encircled by columns, made of yellow Jaisalmer marble, with white caps and bases. Twelve marble jaalis in
the attic serve the decorative purpose of the room as well as provide ventilation and light.
