A saddle roof is a roof form which follows a convex curve about one axis and a
concave curve about the other. The hyperbolic paraboloid form has been used for
roofs at various times since it is easily constructed from straight sections of lumber,
steel, or other conventional materials . The term is used because the form resembles
the shape of a saddle.
PROPERTIES
Properties Points
1. Durability it is more durable compared with other roofs [
example: concrete roofs ]

2. Strength It has good strength due to its fabric materials

are compressed tightly.
3. Low cost Initial investment is low.
4. Acoustic exceptional No pelts of raining , if thickness is high.
5. Self cleaning It does not need any painting and it is also
dust resistance , it can be easily washed with
water.
6. Anti corrosive salt, fertilizer and other corrosive materials
have virtually no effect on polyethylene fabric.
7. Flexibility when a large clear span building with tall
overhead clearances is needed, a fabric
structure is an economical solution.
8. Fire resistance Due to its fabric , it does not catches fire
easily.
APPLICATIONS:
Commercial :
Building owners are constantly looking for ways to
improve their facilities in order to keep their users
happy. From entrances to outdoor eating areas to
branding their buildings, tensile fabric roofs come to the
rescue. This is the entrance canopy we did for Chima
Steakhouse in Tyson Corner, VA

Hospitality
The hotel, motel and resort industry rely heavily on making
a good first impression. Tensile fabric roofs are ideal as
porte cochere or carport entrances on new or existing
facilities. It can also transform a dated facade, pool area
or recreation space. This one was completed for a
renovation at a Hyatt in Princeton, NJ
APPLICATIONS:
Transportation
Tensile fabric roofs are quite common in transportation
projects. Covered Walkways, auto dealerships, ferry
terminals, departure and arrival areas and bus and plane
storage are just a few examples. I worked on the design
and construction of all the walkway canopies for the
WMATA Metro Stations in Washington, DC.

Retail
Retail Architectural is always looking for change,
excitement and ways to provide the client with an
experience worth coming again. Tensile fabric roofs can
cover walkways, specific stores and outdoor dining
areas. This is the atrium at Rego Park Outlet Mall in
Queens, NY.
APPLICATIONS:
Performance
Shading or covering an area for a musical performance is
now a requirement. Bands need to be covered as well as
their equipment and the spectator is demanding shade or
will pay a premium to be covered while watching a show.
Amphitheaters or band shell are ideal opportunities to
consider tensile fabric roofs and there are plenty of good
examples. Scandinavium is an indoor arena located in
Gothenburg, Sweden.

Recreation and public spaces

Architects and Landscape Architects love to use fabric
structures to shade a space, playground or public
plaza. People love shade and they also love to be
protected from the elements (snow, wind and rain).
Maintenance staff love tensile fabric roof too. Lee
Valley VeloPark is a cycling centre on Queen Elizabeth
Olympic Park in Stratford, East London

SWISS EXPO 64, LAUSANNE

 Location : Lausanne, Switzerland
 Function of building: Exhibition
 Climatic zone Temperate – cold winters and mild summers
 Architect: Saugey / Schierle
 Engineer: Froadvaux et Weber
 26 restaurants featured regional cuisines
 Symbolized sailing and mountain peaks Saddle
 The Swiss architect Marc Saugey had the idea to use large tents for a major
part of the Lausanne exhibition, situated right at the shore of the lake of
Geneva, to symbolize the "Swiss Alps" and their snow and rocks with freely
swinging and steeply rising forms of membrane structures.
 So, after the principle forms and the basic layouts were roughly decided on,
Frei Otto was asked to develop the final geometry and to resolve the structural
difficulties in fact, to transfer an architectural vision into a built reality.
 Twenty-four pavilions in total are arranged around a small artificial boat
harbour, overlapping and penetrating each other.
 Most of the pavilions are simple shaped four-point sails, however with a
remarkable large span of 36 m diagonal distance between low and high point.
 Much more spectacular and striking is the group of five extremely peaked
pavilions, roofing the open air restaurant in the northeast corner of the harbour.
 To provide sufficient curvature in such a large roof surface, the edge cables had
to merge almost tangentially into the top of the 24 m long mast.
 Additionally, integrated along the edge cables to the mast top, each of
these pavilions had two smaller three-point sails which were getting their
saddle-shaped curvature due to the very strongly curved edge cables.
 In perfect harmony with the inclined position of the slender latticed mast,
this very effective and elegant architectural appearance of this group of
pavilions was created.
 Structurally the pavilions are not at all usual membrane structures but
prestressed equally meshed steel cable net structures, covered with cotton
fabric as a weather skin.
 The cables of the net are disguised in lipped PVC-pouches which continuously
are sewn on the fabric.
 All main stresses are taken by the cable net whose deformation under load is
much smaller than for the fabric.
 This playful lightness of the form - even if it was just an "endless" repetition of
always the same basic four-point shape for all pavilions - still was underlined
by a cheerful interplay of varying red, yellow and white colors of the roof
skin.
 With the lively waterfront of the lake in the foreground and the green
pastures on high rising mountains in the background, this is an exceptional
example what an architecture with lightweight and wide span membrane
structures can achieve.
