 1.2 million tonnes of cigarette butt waste is produced yearly.
 CBs are composed of cellulose acetate filters—a modified natural polymer with poor biodegradability i.e., it
takes 18 months to degrade.
 RMIT(Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) researchers team led by Dr. Abbas Mohajerani proposed
the effective solution of adding the filters in the brick mixture.
 Minimizes being seeped into the soil in the form of heavy metals such as arsenic, nickel, chromium
 By only adding 1% of the filter butt in a brick, reduces the energy exhausted in firing bricks by 58%, i/e., 48
million tonnes of CBs could be recycled yearly.

AVAILABILITY ?
CB’s - 100 Billion CB’s are being dumped in India every year.

• The cigarette filters are encapsulated with bitumen and paraffin wax to lick in the harmful chemicals and
prevent them from leaching from the asphalt concrete.

• Reduces urban heat island effect in cities.

CB BRICKS-PROPERTIES

  The density of the brick becomes lighter with an increase in the CB

content. Lower density reduces the dead load in the structure.
 They are lighter and easier to handle - reduces transport costs.
 They have a lower thermal conductivity.
  high compressive strength - CB brick with 5% content or less are
acceptable in construction.
 The firing energy was saved by 30.8% and 58.4% for bricks with 2.5%
and 5% of CB content, respectively.
 Water absorption: The rate remained within acceptable limits when
the CB content in bricks was 2.5-5%.
 They have low porosity and shrinkage.
CB BRICKS- PROS AND CONS

PROS:
 Can be manufactured locally.
 Easier to handle - reduces transport costs.
  Low thermal conductivity - reduce the energy costs for the heating and cooling of a building.
 Can be used both in load bearing and non-load bearing structures.
 Reduces the environmental hazards of CB dumping.
 Recycled cigarette butt bricks slash energy consumption by 58%,

CONS:
However, if the CB increased is, more cracks and pores are formed, resulting in the reduction of dry density
and strength of the building material, and an increase in the water absorption properties.
