Lesson 3: Effects of Electromagnetic Waves

<<<------------------------------>>>

Processing Questions:
(1) - Why is this incident considered such a high-profile case?
 The reason as to why this incident became a high-profile case was because of its
effects. Because of the incident, people’s lives were at risk due to the radiation
on the air. Animals, including their habitat, also became a victim to this as well
due to the chemicals leaking on both land and water, specifically the ocean of
Japan, which happened to be inhabited by a lot of unique and exotic living
beings. And due to how both land and water became affected, resources must
have also been difficult to reach and cultivate. Lastly, it became a high-profile
case due to how long and difficult it was to clean up the mess. Due to how
unprepared the people were, and how difficult it was to reach and go up to the
scene itself, cleaning it up became a challenge, which is really bad due to how
long everyone and everything became affected.

(2) - What were the concerns that sprouted out from the incident?
 The leakage of the radioactive chemicals can have negative impacts on a lot of
general components of Earth and the living beings in it. One of the negative
impacts that it had to humanity and other animals is the large amount of radiation
on the atmosphere of Japan around the areas around the power plant. This is an
issue that is needed to be solved immediately due to its effects. As what the
article stated, being simply exposed to the lethal radiation for an hour could kill
anything on sight. What made it worse is that due to the power plant’s location,
the radioactive chemicals leaked on the ocean –which became a really, really
bad situation. Due to how fast and easy things can spread on water, and how the
earth is covered by water, specifically the seas and oceans that are connected
with each other that also happens to encircle every land, almost everyone got
affected. The environment, the natural resources, the homes and habitats of
living beings on that area, and life itself went at risk during this incident. Lastly,
one of the major concerns during this situation was how it was tremendously
difficult it was to clean all of the toxic chemicals were. Being exposed to it was
already bad on its own, but the fact that it takes a lot of effort and investigation to
know how to properly clean it up is also a thing that cannot be casually done just
like that. And because of this, removing the thing that caused the issue became
harder, which is something that pulled them down in general.
(3) - Are the issues related to the incident possible to solve? What are some
precautionary measures that you can suggest to prevent future fallouts?
 Studying how these radioactive chemicals that are lethal can be helpful in
preventing incidents. Studying what they’re composed of, how they work, and
what they can do can be helpful in letting you know how to handle it properly in a
much more different level. I could also suggest to the people who deals them to
have better means of containing and handling these radioactive chemicals.
These includes better building structures –and better materials that are to be
used to make them to prevent any leakage or other major incidents. Simple
equipment that are capable of containing and/or cleaning them up if it comes
down to it can also be helpful. Another thing that I can think of to prevent this
issue is by choosing a better, more isolated area that would not have anything
too important on it, so that the impacts won’t be as hard as the one on the article.
There are a lot of things that you can do to prevent incidents like this in the
future, such as simply being prepared for calamities or changing our means of
getting energy, but these are some of the examples that would be useful for a
situation like this.
