Creating High Quality

Magic the Gathering Proxy Cards

Summary
This primer is intended to provide a list of popular resources used in the
process of creating high quality Magic the Gathering proxies using
Makeplayingcards.com. In addition to providing resources the intent is to
provide a walkthrough of the basic steps that you can use to successfully
create your proxies. The process can be confusing the first time through
without guidance. Hopefully this primer helps lower the barrier to entry with
this process.

Note
I would like to thank the amazing community that has created content, tools
and discovered this process so that we may take advantage of it for ourselves.
It is truly amazing the effort that has come together to make this all happen.
Lastly it is important to note that these are intended for the creation of
proxies of cards that you own, and are never to be sold.

Audience
This primer is intended for someone unfamiliar with the process of making
proxies using makeplayingcards.com as the manufacturer. The process is
simple, but can be confusing to understand the options and the workflow the
first time through.

(Thank you to the redditor that pulled this information together in another post)

Notes
The MPC ready images are not all created equally. Individual processes yield varying results. Proxy
creators have found that images that are created at 500DPI and higher have significantly better results
after printing.

Collect MakePlayingCards (MPC) Ready Images

Summary
○ MakePlayingCards.com requires that you upload images prepared in
specific dimensions in order to successfully print your proxy within the
correct specifications. You have multiple options available for obtaining
correctly formatted images to submit to your MakePlayingCards.com
project.

● You can create your own MPC ready images from scratch
● You can create your own MPC ready images using PhotoShop/GIMP
templates provided by others - Do it if that's your thing - consider
sharing your work with the community
● You can manually find MPC ready images already created by others by
browsing Google Drives.
○ Many of the top providers of these images are provided in this document,
however there are many more generous people who have provided great
work.
● The simplest way may be to use proxycommander.com, which is a tool
that allows you to upload your deck list. It then searches some popular
Google Drives for MPC ready images. It presents the images and
alternate art options (where available) and allows you to download the
MPC ready images. This will greatly reduce the amount of manual
searching required to complete your deck list of images.

Create Cards
● After selecting your print specifications select "Start your design"
● Confirm the number of cards in your order
● Card Front
○ Choose what you want to put on the card fronts
○ Select "Different Images for all fronts"
○ The next screen allows you to bulk upload the entirety of your
MPC ready images to your project
○ Each file averages about 10MB so the process may take a while if
you are processing many images
○ When they are completely uploaded I recommend "Saving your
Project" with the button at the top left of your screen.
○ Now that your images are loaded in the pane on the right you
need to get them loaded into the card slots on the left.
■ You can manually drag and drop them.
■ You can click "[Help me autofill images]" (Recommended)
■ For Double-sided cards you can load one side of the image
on the front of the card, and select the backside of the
image in a later step.
■ Note the card slot number of your double-sided card,
so that you can apply the back-side image to the
correct card slot in a later step.
○ Verify your images have loaded correctly and select "Next Step"

*Note - Your project will offer you the opportunity to correct the alignment of your
image on the card. It has been recommended by regular creators that this step is
unnecessary, and confirmed through comparison by others. With that said, the
alignment will be a result of the image preparation by the person who created it. And
they’re dang good at it.

● Card Backs
○ The next screen allows you to make adjustments, however this
may not be required - Select "Next Step"
■ See Note in above paragraph
○ If you want to use the same image for each backside of every card
in your order - Select "Same for all backs"
○ You may want to select different images to use for the backside if
you have
■ Double-sided cards
■ Want to use the back for additional proxies - like Dual lands
■ If you do select this option you will be brought to a similar
screen as the last step that asks you to upload the images
you want to use, then place them on the cards according to
their slot number.
○ Select "Next Step"
○ The next screen allows you to make adjustments to the
placement. Typically this is unnecessary if the MPC ready image
has been created correctly by the image creator.
○ Review your project for errors and confirm at the bottom of the page
○ Add to cart and enter your payment and shipping information

The final step is to patiently (or impatiently) wait for your order to arrive.
Sometimes printing errors occur in the process and this may be evident when
your order arrives. Overall the quality of images that are provided from the
redditors in this document is top notch, and very few errors are a result of the
images.

If you feel so inclined, please share images of your finished product to the
r/mpcproxies sub. Show some love to the creators of the amazing images that
make this process work and tag them in the finished product post. A good
amount of effort goes into the preparation of this so that we don't have to.
