 Safety Relief Valve
 Pilot Safety Relief Valve
 Thermal Relief Valve
 Vacuum Relief Valve

3
Type of Pressure Relief Device
 Safety Valve
 Automatic safety valves with
spring that working due to
static pressure from upstream
and it will be fully opened.
 Application: Steam drum boiler,
Superheater vessel and other
steam system.
 Restricted: Corrosive area,
outlet line that have back
pressure, liquid, long outlet
pipe.

4
Type of Pressure Relief Device

 Relief Valve
 Automatic safety valves with
spring that working due to
static pressure from
upstream and it will be
opened proportional to the
pressure increase.
 Application: Vessel with
liquid system.
 Restricted: Steam, gas and in
there is pressure variation in
the upstream line.
5
Type of Pressure Relief Device

 Safety Relief Valve

 Automatic safety valves with
spring that working due to
static pressure from upstream
and it will be fully opened and
it can be as safety or relief
valve.
 Application: Equipment in oil
and gas plant, corrosive
service, long drain pipe.
 Restricted: Steam boiler,
steam vessel, steam pipe, etc.
6
Type of Pressure Relief Device

 Pilot Safety Relief Valve

 Safety valves that consist of two component, main
valve as piston and pilot as a driver. Pilot is spring
load valve/diaphragm that control increase pressure
that cause main valve fully open.
 Application:
 Large relief area at high open pressure
 High delta pressure (Operation vs opening pressure).
 High back pressure
 Low blow down

8
Type of Pressure Relief Device

 Thermal Relief Valve

 Automatic safety valves which will be opened if
there is static pressure in upstream due to
temperature increase.

9
Type of Pressure Relief Device

 Vacuum Relief Valve

 A pressure relief equipment which will be activated if
there is pressure increase or vacuum condition.

10
Type of Pressure Safety Valve

 Direct acting type

 Common and Mostly used
 Using spring or load due to stay close against
lifting pressure from operational pressure.

 Pilot operated type

Keep closed due to availability of process pressure.

11
Type of Pressure Safety Valve
Conventional  Advantage:
+ The most reliable valve if
has proper size and right
operating condition.
+ Versatile, it can be used
in various service
(media).
 Weakness
― Back pressure.
― Susceptible to chatter if
high back pressure

12
Type of Pressure Safety Valve
Bellows
 Advantage
+ Release pressure is not
effected by back pressure
+ Has a better resistance from
back pressure
+ Protect spring from corrosion
 Weakness
― Bellows susceptible to
become fatigue/damage
― It may release
flammable/toxic gas to
atmosphere.
― Required separated venting
system.

13
Type of Pressure Safety Valve
Pilot  Adavantage
+ Release pressure is not
effected by back pressure
+ It can be operated until
98% of set pressure
+ Has a little chatter
problem (for several
models)
F2  Weakness
― Pilot is susceptible to be
plugged
― Usage of “O-ring” seals
limit to be used in
chemical service and high
F1 temperature
― Vapor condensation and
liquid accumulation above
piston may cause a
P problem
A2 > A1 ― It may occur back flow
F2 (PxA2) > F1 (PxA1)

Terms in Pressure Relief Valve
1. Back Pressure
Pressure that occur in downstream (outlet) valve which
attempt to reclose the valve.

 Built-up Back Pressure

Pressure on discharge header which caused by there is
liquid flow after safety relief valve open

15
Terms in Pressure Relief Valve
 Super Imposed Back Pressure
Pressure on discharge header when before safety relief
valve open

2. Blowdown Pressure
Pressure difference between popping pressure and pressure
when the valve close and the fluid is already totally come out
(empty).

3. Set Pressure
A pressure when safety valve open and the fluid come out and
popping.

4. Cold Differential Test Pressure (CDTP)

A testing pressure of safety valve after reduced by back
pressure and add by correction temperature.

CDTP = Set Press – Back Press + Correction Temperature

19
Terms in Pressure Relief Valve
5. Opening Pressure
A pressure imposed on the valve to open and release a
pressurized fluid

6. Popping Pressure
A given pressure safety valve until popping noises due to
open disk quickly and remove high pressure fluid in the
blowdown chamber/vessel having a lower pressure.

7. Leak Test
A lower pressure 10% of set pressure charged at the safety
valve after popping test.

8. Reseating Pressure
The pressure imposed on the safety valve to stop releasing
pressure and closed again.

9. Correction Temperature (CT)

A value for correcting the effect of temperature on the set
pressure safety valve.
A correction value is generally determined by the
manufacturer of the safety valve which ranged from 1 – 4 %
of the set pressure at the operating temperature of 200 –
600 oC
