1. Explain the Intelligence Cycle in your own words (50 words)

The Intelligence Cycle is the process of developing raw information into finished
intelligence for policymakers to use in decision making and action. It is the continuous
process which ultimately coordinates and integrates all efforts of the collecting agencies
or units. It is a process used by analysts to create intelligence. The process allows the
intelligence analysts to identifying the criminals’ information requirements, and develops
an intelligence collecting plan to collect the information required. The intelligence cycle
is a tool used for the creation of intelligence which informs the planning and decisions
of commanders and policy makers. The intelligence cycle is comprised on four (4)
fundamentals steps: Planning and Direction; Collection; Processing; and Dissemination.
The intelligence cycle is an effective way of processing information and turning it into
relevant and actionable intelligence. Phase 1 which is planning the collection effort is
the ‘start’ of intelligence cycle. This phase informs the rest of the process, and defines
the information gap, and intelligence requirement. It is important because it gives the
intelligence analyst a start point. Phase 2 Collection of information is concerned with
identification of collecting agency. It involves identifying how it gets the information
required. Phase 3 Processing the collected information involves the evaluation of the
collected information to understand it. It is all about understanding the information.
And last the Phase 4 Dissemination and use of information, is the final phase of the
intelligence cycle. It refers to the activities of transferring the processed information to
the proper users, most particularly the authority that requires the activity.
