My Realizations while Making this Evacuation Plan

by Yvonne Antonette Duyao of Section 21

Different disasters can strike at any time, which is why it is critical to be prepared, especially
if we own a home. As can be seen in my evacuation plan, I have offered numerous areas to
evacuate or remain in the event of a flood, typhoon, earthquake, or even fire in my area.
Because we are aware that our country, the Philippines, is situated on the "Pacific Ring of
Fire" and along the Pacific typhoon belt, making it vulnerable to natural disasters such as
typhoons, earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and fires (ReliefWeb, n.d.).
According to Foreign, C. & D. O. (2022), typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions are
among the most prone disasters in the Philippines. Given that our country is always struck by
around twenty typhoons each year, we are in an earthquake zone, and we have numerous
volcanoes in the Philippines, three hundred to be exact, which twenty-two are active, any of
which can erupt without notice.

For these reasons, it is vital for everyone to have an evacuation plan as it is necessary for us
to be unharmed during these times. When there is an approaching or persistent threat, a risk
to life or place, an evacuation plan outlines out what one should do in the event of an
emergency, and thus aids in the speedy and safe evacuation of us in various regions. This is
quite prevalent in buildings and businesses, but it is uncommon in homes, particularly in
provinces where people in rural areas are less conscious of such issues. Having an evacuation
plan in place at one's house can help prevent more damage and loss of life. This, too, can
improve community preparedness and lessen disaster effect by hastening recovery in the
aftermath of unavoidable disasters. Whereas a typhoon is a disaster or circumstance that
necessitates immediate action and planning, since our country is subjected to them every
year, resulting in substantial devastation of livelihood, lives, and homes for many. Flooding
can also be caused by typhoons, which is another form of calamity that impacts everyone. To
avoid more harm, the government should endeavour to delegate evacuation planning to each
barangay.

Except for typhoons and moderate floods (when there is a typhoon) and the aftermath of an
earthquake from another area, our home in Batac City, Ilocos Norte, is not particularly
vulnerable to natural disasters. Nonetheless, even though we are not particularly prone to
disasters, we must be prepared and prevent any harm that may occur through evacuation
plans and other risk-disaster preventive measures. So, having my own house evacuation plan
is beneficial for me and my family in effectively and safely getting out or staying, and of
course, this can reduce any damage and speed up the recovery process in my barangay. I am
also grateful that I am a part of NSTP 2 since it has made me much more aware of the value
of such things as a student. And being a student in this field gave me a better understanding
of issues that can help or save others. I can also envision myself as someone who would
volunteer in the event of a disaster in my city. I will be aiding others by assisting them in
establishing evacuation preparations from their homes to the relocation site, as well as in
informing others of any news or information that will be beneficial to everyone. And, during
this pandemic, I can be effective in my home and community by using my leadership skills to
invent things that may be useful to the needy, as well as advocating and raising awareness on
matters that are sensitive to many people. Finally, I will utilize my voice to fight for the rights

of others who have been mistreated and denied assistance for the past few years, whether
through social media or going directly to our barangay.

Finally, creating this evacuation plan not only benefited me and my family, but it also made
me realize that I need to volunteer to help others. With the reason that, not everyone is aware
of this issue or has received no or little education on it. This exercise has humbled me since,
even though I am merely a university student, I have been thinking of others and how I may
help them more while creating this. I would like to promote greater awareness on this risk-
disaster preparedness exercise through my social media platforms, where it can encourage my
audience to learn more about it.
