NSTP Task 3

1. Give your own observation on the idea that the Philippines is a disaster-prone country. Do
you agree with this or not?
- Yes, I do agree with the idea that Philippines is a disaster-prone country. We know that
Philippines is an archipelago and it makes our country more vulnerable. Moreover, our
country’s geographic position makes us susceptible to natural hazards such as typhoon,
earthquake, flood, volcanic eruption, landslides and fire. In terms of dispersing help,
our country is also at risk since we are an archipelago and unlike any other countries,
we sometimes need to use transportation not just in land but also in transportation by
water and air. It is not easy to give out immediate help for instance, our countrymen in
the Visayas region who underwent major desolation from the past typhoons. Help was
not provided straightaway because (1) it is not safe to travel neither by water or air and
(2) the local government was not prepared.

2. What makes a society vulnerable from disasters and hazards?

- Ignorance. Ignorance plays a huge part in making a society more vulnerable to disasters
and hazards. People in a certain community are not to blame but the ones who are
governing them. Everyone in the society is entitled to information and even training on
what one should do before, during and after a disaster or hazard will happen, is
happening or have happened. Normal citizens especially ones who are in the bottom of
the social class are also eligible of information but since they were deprived of such
knowledge, they are the ones who are most likely to experience major devastation.
Furthermore, unpreparedness also makes a society vulnerable to disasters. If one does
not know what to do before a disaster happens, it is highly probable that damage will
intensify. So ignorance makes people unprepared, that makes society more vulnerable
to disasters and hazards.

3. Write a short reflection paper on the theme: Education in the time of Pandemic.
- A lot of students and parents risk a great deal regarding the new education system
during this pandemic. Despite not having enough financial capability to support their
children’s education because of the sudden demand on gadgets for online class, parents
did a lot going to the extent of risking their health just to garner enough cash to buy
their kids gadgets. We all risk a lot in partaking in this new system since it is sudden
and we knew from the beginning that we are not ready. Despite being technology
literate, we are not that advanced in terms of using technology as part of education and
now that the pandemic happened, we are forced to implement technology as the first
basis of education in this new system. Education was made hard for students who are
not privileged enough to buy themselves devices they can use to study. In result, a lot
ended stopping for a year in hopes that the pandemic will soon stop and everything will
be back to normal. However, months passed by and our situation hasn’t been better, we
were stuck at the same situation we were ten months ago when other countries are
already moving on with their life. I myself as a student, even though it is already months
after class started, I haven’t fully adjusted to this new education system that it
sometimes makes me wonder if I am just complying for the sake of passing despite the
fact that I am not fully learning.
