Activity 4.1: Analysis

Process Questions:
1. What can you say about each picture?
- The image shows a Filipino indigenous man playing a bamboo and wood
instrument, which may indicate his native culture, notably in the field of music and
the arts. At the same time, these pictures illustrate how people cherish music in their
lives as if it were a part of their daily routines and traditions. As a result, his tribe's
traditional costume displays their symbolic and preserved culture, which we must
treasure to this day.
2. Describe the person in the picture? What is he doing?
The man in the picture is Ginaw Bilog, a Hanunoo Mangyan poet from Mansalay,
Oriental Mindoro. The bamboo that hes holding is called Ambahan. The ambahan is
the traditional poetry of the Hanunuo Mangyans of Oriental Mindoro. It is usually
written on bamboo in the Surat Mangyan, a centuries-old pre-Spanish script. The
syllabic script and the ambahan poetry have complemented each other, contributing
to their continued existence today. Ambahan is a poetic literary form composed of
seven-syllable lines used to convey messages through metaphors and images. The
ambahan is sung and its messages range from courtship, giving advice to the young,
asking for a place to stay, saying goodbye to a dear friend and so on.
3. Do you consider him as a contemporary artist? Why?
Yes.Ginaw Bilog is considered a contemporary artist. He was a Filipino poet who was
recognized as a National Living Treasure by the Philippine government. This wisdom
is his key to the understanding of the Mangyan soul.He grew up in such a cultural
environment. Already steeped in the wisdom that the ambahan is a key to the
understanding of the Mangyan soul, Ginaw took it upon himself to continually keep
scores of ambahan poetry recorded, not only on bamboo tubes but on old, dog-eared
notebooks passed on to him by friends. The most treasured items in his collection are
those inherited from his father and grandfather, sources of inspiration and guidance
for his creative endeavors.

1. What is the significance of their works to the region or community they
belong?
- The significance of their work is to assist his or her community one by one,
providing the greatest assistance possible. Through metaphors and images . Ginaw
Bilog and his Ambahan is primarily a poem of social character; it finds its true
existence in society. It is created by the Mangyans to serve practical purposes within
the community. It is used by the parents in educating their children, by young people
in courting each other, by a visitor is asking for food, and by a relative bidding
goodbye or farewell while Federico Caballero preserved his community’s oral
tradition by tediously documenting epics of his ancestors that are in near danger of
disappearance.
2. Are their skills and crafts being preserved? How?
- Ambahan has remained in existence today chiefly because it is etched on bamboo
tubes using ancient Southeast Asian, pre-colonial script called surat Mangyan.
- In year 2000, Federico Cabllero was granted the GAMABA Award because of his
efforts to preserve Panay - Bukidnon's beliefs, literature by encouraging researchers
and culture advocates to write them to teach younger members in their community
3. Aside from promoting their crafts and folk arts, do they have social
responsibilities to their community? If yes, what are those?
- Yes, because they have their own responsibilities. They must bring joy, connection,
and inspiration to communities, but they must also provide intelligent criticism of our
political, economic, and social structures, encouraging participants to engage
thoughtfully and take measures toward social betterment. They are in charge of
uncovering the truth. Within society, the community, and the world at large, they
must be as genuine to themselves as possible.

Activity 4.4: Analysis

Questions:
1. What is the significance of Ambahan tradition to the country’s cultural
heritage?
- The Ambahan is sung, with meanings ranging from courting to giving advice to the
young, requesting a place to stay, and bidding farewell to a close friend, among other
things. The Ambahan texts inscribed on bamboos are left along forest trails to greet
strangers or guide travelers.
2. How does Ambahan tradition still exist nowadays?
- Although such oral traditions are popular among indigenous cultural groups, the
ambahan has survived because it is inscribed on bamboo tubes using surat Mangyan,
an old Southeast Asian pre-colonial script.
3. Why is it important to preserve this kind of artistic craft?
- The preservation of art forms is a major responsibility of a ruling authority because
it reflects society's and nation's recent history. The first reason that ruling authorities
preserve art forms is that they aid in the development of human creativity and
imagination, and art and culture are indicators of heritage and legacy, as well as
proof of an ancient past. If a society loses its arts and culture, it loses its heritage,
history, and legacy, and once lost, it cannot be resurrected or reclaimed. Physical
artifacts have extraordinary qualities that have been passed down through the
generations. It is our job, as people in the current generation, to preserve these
legacies so that future generations can benefit from the benefits or lessons we have
gained from them.
