B. Establishing a purpose for the
lesson Contemporary art is the art of today, produced by artists who are
living in the twenty-first century. As such, it reflects the complex
issues that shape our diverse, global, and rapidly changing
world. Through their work, many contemporary artists explore
personal or cultural identity, offer critiques of social and
institutional structures, or even attempt to redefine art itself.
It is expected that at the end of this lesson you should be able to
explain Filipino artists' roles and identify their contributions to
contemporary arts.

Remember that every art has its own story.

Let the students answer the question:

Have you wondered who are the people behind these stories?
C. Presenting examples/ instances of The Philippines is a gold mine of ART. It allows Filipino artists to
the new lesson portray the subject and the medium in innovative and skillful
ways, reflecting Filipino identity.

The art of the Philippines had been influenced by almost all

spheres of the globe. It had the taste of the Renaissance,
Baroque, and Modern Periods through the colonizers who
arrived in the country.

Our culture and arts define our identity as an Abrenio,

Cordilleran and most of all, as a Filipino.

In this topic, we will focus on traditional arts, its practice and the
people, and community involvement in the award recognizing
excellence in performance and art.
The traditional arts in the Philippines encompass folk
architecture, maritime transport, weaving, carving, folk
performing arts, folk (oral) literature, folk graphic and plastic arts,
ornament, textile, or fiber art, pottery, and other artistic
expressions of traditional culture.
There are numerous Filipino specialists or experts on the various
fields of contemporary traditional arts. Those garnering
the highest distinctions were declared as Gawad Manlilikha ng
Bayan (GAMABA), equal to National Artist.
They are our National Living Treasures.
In April 1992, the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or the National
Living Treasures Award was institutionalized through Republic
Act No. 7355
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA),
through the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Executive Council,
conducts the search for the finest traditional artists of the land,
adopts a program that will ensure the transfer of their skills to
others, and undertakes measures to promote a genuine
appreciation of and instill pride among our people about the
genius of the Manlilikha ng Bayan.
