ABOUT THE CEPT UNIVERSITY
LOCATION :
GUJARAT UNIVERSITY AREA, AHMEDABAD
ARCHITECT : B.V. DOSHI
AREA OF SITE : 12.5 ACRE
GENERAL INFORMATION :
ONE OF THE BEST EXAMPLES OF SPATIAL
PLANNING WITH INTERESTING PATHWAYS
CEPT UNIVERSITY WAS STARTED IN 1962
UNDER THE AHMEDABAD EDUCATION
SOCIETY AND WAS ACTIVELY SUPPORTED
BY KASTURBA LAL BHAI A LEADING
INDUSTRIALIST AND PHILANTHROPIST.
THE SCHOOL BROKE AWAY FROM THE
CONVENTIONAL TEACHING COURSES
THE CONCEPT CHANGED FROM
ARCHITECTURE AS A TECHNICAL
DISCIPLINE TO ARCHITECTURE AS A
DESIGN DISCIPLINE.
WHAT IS NZEB (NET ZERO ENERGY BUILDING)

A NET-ZERO ENERGY BUILDING (NZEB) IS A BUILDING WITH ZERO NET ENERGY

CONSUMPTION.
IN SUCH A BUILDING, ENERGY CONSUMED IS EQUAL TO OR SOMETIMES LESS
THAN THE ENERGY GENERATED BY INSTALLED RENEWABLE ENERGY
TECHNOLOGIES.
VARIOUS PASSIVE AND ACTIVE STRATEGIES ARE DEPLOYED TO ENSURE THAT THE
BUILDING CONSUMES AS LESS ENERGY AS POSSIBLE BUT WORKS EFFICIENTLY AT
THE SAME TIME.
CONSIDERING THAT BUILDINGS CONSUME THE MAXIMUM ENERGY IN A CITY,
NZEBS CAN BE A SIGNIFICANT STEP TOWARDS BUILDING ENERGY EFFICIENCY.

ABOUT NZEB(NET-ZERO ENERGY BUILDING)
ON THE SITE

THE NZEB (Net-Zero Energy Building) is located at CEPT University,

Ahmedabad, which was analysed according to the climatic conditions
of Ahmedabad and finalised the design in March 2012.
They started construction in September 2012. They finished
construction in March 2016.
The NZEB (Net-Zero Energy Building) was planned on the site, near the
GIDC Bhavan, Faculty of design and Faculty of Technology.
NZEB The building has two accessibility’s on the site, one is from the north
side and the other is from university road

PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES

ORIENTATION
The building is north-south oriented with appropriate
shading and light shelves on the south.

DAYLIGHTING
Vision, clerestories, light shelves on south bring in diffuse
daylight with occupant control. north light is used for
introducing daylight into the building.

ACTIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES

HVAC TECHNOLOGIES
1. Mixed-mode ventilation.
2. Radiant cooling floor and ceiling panels for
simulation lab and basement floor.
3. VRF for dedicated outdoor air system at 3.51 COP
with CO2 control.
4. Air-cooled chiller with 3.35 COP (ARI).
5. Passive cooling in non-summer months with
underground tank and evaporative fluid cooler.
6. Premium efficiency pump motors with VFDs.
LIGHTING DESIGN
1. Daylight autonomy 75% time for over 90% of spaces.
2. Daylighting and vacancy sensor control of lights at 4.7
W/m2.
3. Office equipment control with occupancy sensor control.

BUILDING AND SYSTEM LEVEL SENSORS

There are 357 sensors for building level and system-level monitoring
which are connected with BMS. These are used to measure dry bulb
temperature, relative humidity, the surface temperature of the envelope,
globe temperature, occupancy, and CO2 at a 1-minute interval. They help
in monitoring and controlling the systems in the building. The data is
Actual energy consumption vs. generation through PV panels for the
stored and can be accessed and visualized using BMS. year 2016 (Vaidya & Chatti, 2017)
