COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Grade 2 Language Arts course focuses on the integrated English skills which are reading, vocabulary,
spelling, grammar, speaking, and writing. Students will distinguish and identify the beginning, middle and
ending sounds of letters in words. They will recognize words while reading by using context clues. Read
passages fluently with appropriate changes in voice, timing and expression. Tell the difference between facts
and opinion, realism and fantasy. Enrich vocabularies and spell words correctly when writing sentences and
practiced writing skills by producing informal writings (e.g., messages, journals, friendly letter, and simple
poems) for various purposes that convey clear messages. Students will also use correct subject and verbs
that are in agreement to construct sentences. During role plays, show and tell, and oral presentations,
students will speak clearly and coherently.

RATIONALE FOR THE COURSE

This is to make sure that instructional emphasis is placed on the right skills at the right time and to maintain
systematic sequence of skills instruction. Teaching language arts by integrating all the English skills through
differentiating instruction, monitoring progress, assessing and regrouping gear students to successful
language learning.

 Practice fluency skills in variety of ways when reading.


 Determine word meaning of unfamiliar words, and multiple-meaning words through context clues.
 Identify literary elements when reading for comprehension skills.
 Apply comprehension skills such as compare and contrast, graphic organizers, sequencing of events,
drawing conclusion, and making predictions in reading and writing
 Differentiate and identify fact and opinion, cause and effect, reality and fantasy

 Read, write, and apply Phonic rules ( Consonants, consonant blends, diphthongs, vowels, other
vowel patterns)
 Decode base words and inflected endings
 Blend syllables to decode multisyllabic words
 Read high frequency words and lesson vocabulary
 Develop vocabulary through direct instruction, concrete experiences, reading, and listening to text
read aloud.
 Apply word order and concepts ( synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, rhyming, and multiple-meaning
words) in sentences appropriately

English/ Composition

 Read and write phonograms/word families and sentences


 Recognize kinds of sentences ( declarative, interrogative, exclamatory sentences)
 Put correct punctuation at end of a sentence. (Period, question mark, or exclamation point).
 Use contractions, compounds, suffixes and prefixes appropriately
 Identify parts of speech ( nouns, verbs, prepositions, adverbs, and adjectives )
 Use word usage in writing and speaking correctly.
 Speak and write in grammatically correct sentences

 Write legibly and neatly
 Form letters and words ( with the same size and height ) so they can be easily read by others

 Construct fragments and simple sentences
 Write simple poems and stories with guidance
 Write letters or invitations that include relevant information and follow letter format (e.g., date,
