SEMESTER MARCH 2022

Anatomy of An Innovation
Ford Assembly Line
1. What were their Unique Value Proposition (UVP)?
- Affordable price ($850) made for ordinary people and his employees.
- Reliable as able to drive through worst roads in rural areas.
- Increase speed of assembly line – 6 ft/min to enable mass production by manufacturing
Model T in 90 minutes instead more than 12 hours.

2. What were their Pain Points? (N)

- Lack of product uniqueness due to mass production techniques and standardization.
- Reduced the variety of goods produced, so consumers had fewer choices due to the
configured order from a predefined menu.
- Tended to have more defects and significant compromises in product quality w hich may
ruin the value that the original product provided

3. What were their Approach in solving the need? (A)

- Inspired by the continuous flow production methods used by flour mills, breweries,
canneries and industrial bakeries, along with the disassembly of animal carcasses in
Chicago’s meat packing plants.
- Workers built motors and transmissions on rope and pulley powered conveyor belts.
- In December 1913, Ford unveiled the moving chassis assembly line.
- In February 1914, Ford added a mechanized belt that chugged along at a speed of six
feet per minute.
- Use movement element as assembly line instead of worker moving to and around the
vehicle

4. What were benefits of their approach? (B)

- Innovations in Ford assembly lines reduce the number of workers required and reduce
the time it takes to assemble a car.
- It also gives the company more control over the rhythm. While the most important
example of his technological innovation, moving the assembly belt from one
perspective, is just another way Ford can exert tight control over his workers.
- The line was seen as an insult to skilled craftsmen and another example of the
overwhelming patriarchal control a company could have over its workers in the age of
mass production.

5. How did they differentiate their innovations from their competitions? (C)
- In the mid-1920s, refused to admit that the Model T was obsolete. More luxurious,
better-styled cars appeared for prices that weren't much higher than the Model T, and
through the growing used car market, these cars were increasingly available to lower-
income buyers.

- This assembly line innovation allowed Ford to cut the price of its Model T to $350 from
the previous $850. Meanwhile, the company is now able to produce a car in 90 minutes,
down from 12 hours previously.
- The manufacturing time reduced further with continued improvements in the assembly
line. This further reduced production time and eventually allowed Ford to produce one
Model T vehicle every 24 seconds.
