Meaning of Education
 derived from two Latin words :
 Educare (Educere) - to train or mould
 “Educatum” - act of teaching
 Education is a systematic process through which a child or an adult acquires knowledge,
experience, skill and sound attitude. It makes an individual civilized, refined, cultured and
educated
 “Education is a process for training of hand, head, and heart. It is all round drawing the best in
child’s to man’s body, mind and soul”. - M.K.Gandhi
 “Education is the manifestation of divine perfection already existing in man”. – Vivekananda

Philosophy
 derived from two Greek words Philo” (love) Sophia” (wisdom)
 love of wisdom
 Philosophy is science of science (Coleridge)
 Philosophy is search for a comprehensive view of nature , an attempt at universal explanation
of nature of thing (Henderson)
 philosophy is science knowledge (Fitch)

 What is man’s origins?
 What is man’s destiny
 Philosophers try to answer these questions according to their own mature reflection and
thinking and their different answers led to different philosophies.

Philosophy of Education
 Philosophy of education may be defined as the application of fundamental principle of
philosophy of life to the work of education .
 Philosophy of education offers a definite set of principles and establishes a definite set of aims
and objectives. It offers criteria for intelligent interpretation of educational end and means.
