PAAVA KADAIGAL

Paava kadigal is a tamil anthology drama film released in the year 2020.paava kadaigal means
sin stories .It is a series of four short films tied up with a common theme. they are thangam by
sudha kongra , love panna uttranum by vignesh shivam, vaanmagal by gautham vasudev menon
and oor iravu by vetrimaaran.

THANGAM

Thangam is directed by sudha kongra which portrays the struggles of a trans woman who
lives in a small village of kovai district. the story happens the year 1981 .satar is a muslim trans
transwomen. The society who couldn’t accept her identity and gender always harass and abuse
him. Sathar earns money by standing in queue at the ration shop for the villagers and
delivering the goods to their homes. she saves that money for her gender reassignment
surgery. Sathar is in love with her childhood friend whom she affectionately calls thangam
which means precious. she wants to marry him after her surgery and live a norml married life.
but she comes to know that saravana is in love with her younger sister sahira . Even though
being heartbroken sathar accepts the fact and unites saravana and sahira to grant her only
friends wish. Saravana and sahira being of different religion both families opposes their
relationship. Knowing that both family would even kill them to uphold their pride and honor
satar helps saravana and sahira to elope. She also gives them all the money she saved for her
gender reassignment surgery. Before leaving saravana gives sathar a lipstick and asks her not to
use betel leaves anymore and hugs him. sathar being emotional says that you are only one
who accept me as I am. one year later the young couples returns to their village with their
new born son.they are very excited to reunite with Sathar .but on the way home they comes
to know that sathar was abandoned from the family and village after helping them elope.
Knowing this cruel act saravana and sahira denies to unite with the family .trans people still
face severe discrimination, stigma and systematic inequality.lck of legal protection ,stigma
harassment and discrimination, violence ,identity crisis are some of the major problems faced
by the trans people even now.

LOVE PANNA UTTRANUM

Veerasimman is a politician who unites couple from two different caste speaking up for
equality for his political agenda .but in the dark side using his people including narikitty he kills
them. By this contradicting acts it comes to a conclusion veerasimman can never digest the fact
of two people from different caste uniting. veerasimman has two daughters aadilaksmi and
jyothilaksmi . they are twins. Aadhilaksmi lives in the village with her father .she is in love with
her father driver. where as jyothilaksmi live in the city. She is in love with a rapper named B
cube. Knowing aadilaksmi’s affair with the driver who is from another caste considering her
being his daughter he accepts the relationship. But with the influence of narikkutty he changes
his mind and kills his own daughter .he finds cast and religion precious than anything.
Jyothilaksmi B cube and Penelope who is their friend without knowing the act of veerasimman
reaches home. Suspecting another inter caste marriage of b cube and jyothilaksmi virasimman
tries to kill them as well. To escape from veerasimman Penelope and jyothilaksmi argues that
they are lesbians. Jyothilaksmi begs her father to let them live. She tries to convince
veerasimman there something called love which is beyond caste and religion. Surprisingly
veerasimman let them leave accepting the truth that humanity is something beyond caste and
religion. Two years later veerasimman manages to escape from the village and fasle beliefs and
goes to france with and lives with his daughter Jyothilaksmi and b cube (bad boy bharath).

VAANMAGAL

Vaanmagal is the story of a 12 year old girl ponnuthayi who lives in a normal middle class
family with her father(sathya) ,mother(mathi), sister(vaidhehi) and brother(bharath).
ponnuthayi is someone with great dreams thet she says to her father one day she wants fly into
the sky with her wings like kalpana chawla. mathi is strictly an old fashioned mother. when the
elder daughter vaidehi attains puberty mathi advises her not to walk around and even not to
touch things at her home. From this statement of mathi it is clear that she considers
menstruation impure. Mathi asks vaidhehi from now on every second of life take good care of
her body and keep it pure as temple and protect her herself and life a dignified and honorable
life.one day ponnuthayi gets raped by someone at her neighborhood. The family even refuses
to file a complaint to the police since they are worried that it will tarnish the honour of the
family. slowly ponnutahyi recovers from this trauma and injuries .sathya tells ponnuthayi that
nothing is her fault and asks her to continue following your dreams.but mathi who is unable
deal with the society as well as her own self imagines pushing ponnuthayi to death to avoid
dishonor. At the same time bharath takes revenge on the one who abused ponnuthayi Mathi
tries to justify her act by the words ; “a family’s honour ,its pride and prestige are borne by the
women at home .in their bobies ,between their legs, in their breast and faces and their words”.
She consieders ponnuthayi impure. But in the next moment moment she regrets on her
thought of pushing her dearest daughter down the cliff in the name of honor. It’s the society
that decides what honor means to us. It is high time kick off social evils and false beliefs from
our mind and society keeping aside pride and honour for young girls like ponnuthayi who are
victim of sexual abuse to overcome the trauma with the help of family and society and also
eradicate such things and people from the society.

OOR IRAVU

Hari and Sumathi are well educated couples who lives in banglore. Sumathi who fell in love with
hari who was from a lower caste gets disowned by the family.knowing that sumathi is pregnant
her family reunites with her .Sumathi’s father Janakirams accepts his-son-law and willingly
invites both of them to his house in the village for sumath’s baby shower rituals. Even though
Sumathi’s father and mother could accept her not her relatives and villagers couldn’t. Since
sumathi eloped with a lower caste her family and siblings has been a victim of severe
harassment .anyhow due to the dishonour sumathi brought ito the family her father
Janakiraman kills her by giving her poison in drinking water believing that only sumathi,s death
can restore the pride and honour of the family. Janakiraman stops his wife from calling
ambulance and locks sumathi in a room and let her die . Sumathi pleads to her father to at least
let her child live. not hearing her nor his wife he turns his back and walk away. By the time hari
reaches sumathis house he see sumathi dead and realizes that Janakiraman is behind her
death.hari files a case against sumathi’s father Janakiraman, for her muder. Sumathi’s testifies
against her husband in court. While the case was under hearing, citing the trauma of her
daughters death sumathis mother was locked up in a psychiatric facility. the court acquits
Jananakiraman , stating insufficient evidence. with the support of social activists hari appeals
to higher courts .the film end by writing “hoping justice will be served”

The major theme of the film evolves around the honour killing. Each plot has shown justice to
the theme .the performance each characters are equally appreciable specially sathar in
thangam, narikutty in love panna uttranum also Janakiraman and sumathi in oor irvu. The
movie lso have best background music. the song thangame in the segment thangangam seems
to be very heart touching. the films opens ups all the major social problems in the society such
as caste discrimination, victim blaming , violence and atrocities against women, problems face
by transgender ,honor killing etc. The film eplores how pride, honour,an sin influence
relationships of love.Each segment of this movie has a deep message to the audience.
