 Any flaws resulting from improper mechanical alignment or a weak mounting structure during
the installation process may cause vibration or mechanical damage during operation.
 Excessive voltage variation (±10%) and frequency variation (±5%) of the motor may cause a
lack of torque or over-heating, which could cause problems while the motor is in use.
 If you operate a commercial frequency general-type motor with an inverter, you may experience
motor problems due to insulation or cooling failure. If an inverter must be used, please use a
motor specifically designed to be used with the inverter.
 Do not exceed the approved voltage rate listed on the motor nameplate. The motor may be
damaged by overloading.
 The driving-type of the motor should be selected by considering the right load type. An incorrect
starting method may cause operation failure due to insufficient torque.
 If you use a belt-type driving motor, choose the pulley according to international standards, such
as KS, IEC or NEMA. Also, please pay attention to the belt's tension and the parallelism of the
pulley. For all belt-type driving motors, please make sure to install a protective net to prevent
any possible physical injuries.
 Do not connect a 2P-type high speed motor and direct motor using the belt-type method. This
may result in an accident if the shaft is cut.
 If the motor has been in storage for an extended period, check the motor’s insulation resistance
thoroughly before using it.
 Excessive or insufficient amounts of grease and oil may cause damage to the bearings and the
motor. Make sure that no contaminant is contained in grease or oil when being applied.
 Use the designated grease and oil. The usage of unauthorized grease or oil may reduce the
life span of the bearings or cause damage from overheating.
 Shut off the power supply if the motor does not start operating within 15 seconds of turning on
the power. In this situation, the unnecessary flow of electricity may cause serious damage to
the motor. Please call the Hyosung Technical Division if you need further assistance.
 Operating the motor at a load exceeding the permitted amount of inertia for the standard motor
may shorten the life span of the motor due to it experiencing electric shocks. Contact the
Hyosung Technical Division if the amount of inertia exceeds the permitted amount.
 Do not repair or modify the motor at your own discretion. This can result in an accident or the
shortening of the life span of the motor.
 For water-cooled motors, use water with designated quality, flow, pressure and temperature.
Failure to do so may result in overheating or rust.

- 5-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

 When using a water-cooled motor, drain water from the pipes when the motor is not being
used. Any remaining water inside the pipes may cause them to rupture or rust.
 When using the emergency bearing lubrication oil pump, use oil with designated flow, pressure
and temperature. Use of unauthorized oil may cause damage to the bearings.
 Use the appropriate lifting equipment when lifting a heavy part. Moving a part without the
right equipment can cause an accident.
 Y-△ starter motor must be started with Y and operated with △ . Continuing the operation with Y
may cause the voltage to drop, which would result in overloading the motor and overheating.
 Operating a general motor designed for continuous operation (S1) under the operation
condition from repetition rating of S3 or higher, may shorten the life span of the motor or cause
damage by fire due to electric, mechanical and thermal impact. The motor must be operated
no more than 5 times a day, 2 COLD and 1 HOT. If the motor is being used frequently, please
contact the Hyosung Technician Division for more information.
 Avoid exposure to high levels of noise for extended periods of time. Long periods of
exposure to high levels of noise produced by the motor and the machines will cause hearing
damage or loss. Make sure to wear the appropriate protective gear.
 Using a motor with inappropriate protection grade may damage the motor from intrusion of
foreign substances.
 The standard motor must be used within the temperature range of -20℃ - 40℃. Operating a
motor outside its designated temperature range may cause deterioration in the capability to
lubricate the bearings and overheating of the coils. Contact the Hyosung Technical Division if
you need to use the motor outside its designated temperature range.
 Disused motor parts must be handled as general industrial waste. Leaving disused parts
outside or failure to handle parts as industrial waste may cause pollution.
 Keep dust, oil or grease away from the motor. Insufficient ventilation may cause a fire.
 Check the rotation direction before operating the motor. If the motor does not rotate in its
default rotation direction, the motor may be damaged due to deterioration in the cooling
capability.
 Apply heat to the coupling for installation or disassembly. Support the pulley with a jockey
before applying heat. Apply heat evenly, and take out the coupling once the temperature rises.
Excessive force may damage the motor bearings and the shaft.

moving the shaft and coupling with sufficient space at the bottom. Any impact on the shaft and coupling
may cause vibration and noise.
(6) Lifting method of motor by crane

 Do not lift the motor itself with the motor part lifting ring. Also do not lift the machine with the motor
lifting ring. There is the danger of severe injuries being caused if this equipment is used
inappropriately.

 Use appropriate lifting equipment to move heavy parts. Lifting parts without proper equipment can
result in accidents.

2.2 Inspection
(1) The product and the package must be inspected immediately upon arrival. Any transport damage must
be photographed and reported immediately, i.e. within less than one (1) week after arrival, if the transport
insurance is to be claimed. It is, therefore, important that evidence of careless handling is checked and
reported immediately to the transport company and the supplier.
(2) If there is any damage to the package box, please remove the package box immediately for inspection,
and check for any damage on the motor itself or that all accessories are included. And even if there is no
abnormality in the motor and accessories, take pictures thereof and contact the transportation company

the Hyosung Service Department.

(4) The rustproofing agent treated on the shaft and coupling after unpacking must be removed immediately
before starting the motor.

2.3 Storage
2.3.1 Before dismantling the packaging box
(1) When the package is stored without being disassembled, since the inside of the box is sealed with
a waterproof cover and a hygroscopic agent, be careful not to damage it during long-term storage.
(2) Keep the motor in a clean, dry, ventilated place with stable temperature and no vibration.
2.3.2 Short-term storage (within 2 months) after unpacking
(1) Keep the motor in a clean, dry, ventilated place with stable temperature and no vibration.
- Humidity: below 75%, - Ambient temperature: 10℃ ~ 40℃ (50℉ ~ 104℉)
(2) If the room is equipped with a separate heating and cooling system, operate the air conditioner to
prevent condensation.
(3) If outside storage is unavoidable
- Please keep it on a stand of more than 100mm (4 inch) to prevent the inflow of water.
- Please keep sealed packing with waterproof cover and hygroscopic agent until installation.
2.3.3 Long-term storage (over 2 months)
(4) Use an insulation resistance meter with a measuring voltage that meets the rated voltage every three
months to measure the insulation resistance and manage the insulation. <4.1 (2) Check insulation
resistance>.
(5) If the motor temperature is lower than or equal to the room temperature, condensation will occur
inside/outside of the motor, so in order to prevent this, always keep the space heater at least 5℃ above
the ambient temperature. If the motor is not equipped with a space heater, an alternative method of heating
the motor and preventing moisture from condensing in the machine must be used. If the space heater
cannot be operated at all times, if it is measured below the insulation resistance standard value, operate
space heater for 1 week to check if the insulation resistance standard value is satisfied, and if unsatisfied
operate additional 1 week, and repeat insulation resistance measurement and heater operation until
insulation resistance reference value is satisfied and stop operation thereof.
(6) The product is shipped with anti-rust paint to prevent rusting, but please check periodically because
rust may occur depending on storage conditions.

- 9-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

(7) Apply grease to the rolling bearings (ball or roller bearings) every 6 months with the grease drainage
open and re-inject while rotating, and if the power source is connected, apply power once a month and
rotate it for several minutes or if power is not connected, perform at least 10 rounds of hand turning once a
month. Also, when storing for more than 2 years, please disassemble the bearings and re-lubricate after
cleaning/inspection.
(8) Sleeve bearings are shipped without oil, so for long-term site storage, fill the bearing housing with
oil.
(9) If the motor is installed and planned not to be used for more than 3 months in a condition where
humidity is high and moisture or foreign objects are likely to enter the motor, cover the whole motor with a
waterproof cover and seal it with desiccant inside. Replace the desiccant regularly.
(10) If the motor is stationary for a long time, do hand-turning regularly to prevent damage to the bearing
& shaft lubrication area and deflection of shaft. Hand-turning work is performed more than two turns
(revolutions) at least once a month. When stopped the shaft, make sure that the shaft if positioned
180degrees opposite the position before. (Includes storage, installation, and operation rest periods)
(11) If horizontal sleeve bearing and vertical tilting pad type bearing are applied, hand-turning work is
not possible by hand, so use proper instruments. In particular, the tilting pad type may only be rotated by
lifting the shaft to the upper side. In this case, the shaft lifting should not exceed 0.2mm.

 Space heater's output is proportional to the square of the voltage, so excessive voltage can shorten
the lifetime of the heater. Therefore, it must no more than the rated voltage during operation. Also, Space
Heater is a consumable item, so Spare must be secured.
 We are not responsible for defects caused by storage problems without observing the contents of
this manual.
 Motors equipped with water-cooler (such as bearings or cooling boxes) must be removed cooling
water from the cooler before packing or after installation. If the cooling water is not removed, cooler
damage may occur due to freezing.

3. Installation
3.1 Conditions for installation place
(1) Install the motor in a place with good ventilation, low dust and humidity, easy to inspect, and avoid
places where there is moisture, oil, or excessive external vibration.
(2) The motor should be used in locations where ambient temperatures do not exceed 40℃ (marine
standard -20 or +40℃) and the altitude is 1,000 m below sea level. For more information about
using the motor in locations with higher ambient temperatures or altitudes, contact the Hyosung
Technical Division.

 Use the appropriate explosion-proof motor in explosive surroundings (flammable materials, explosive
gases or dust). Using a non-explosion-proof electric motor can cause serious damage as a result

- 10-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

of explosions or fire.

 Install the aspirator and vent for cooling at least 30 cm away from the wall. If not, damage from fire
may result from cooling failure.

 Use the standard motor in the temperature range of -20℃ ~ 40℃. Operating a motor outside the
designated temperature range may cause deterioration in the capability to lubricate the bearings and
overheat the winding. Contact the Hyosung Technical Division if you need to use the motor outside
the designated temperature range.

3.2 Foundation and installation

(1) Foundation work and foundation bolt embedding shall be based on the installation specifications and
shall be capable of accommodating the maximum static and dynamic basis loads on the motor external
dimension drawings and shall be installed on a solid foundation free of resonant frequencies that can occur
during normal operation. Also, make sure that the deviation of the center caused by the settling of the
ground and the change over time is minimized.
(2) After the concrete is completely cured, tighten the LINER on both sides of the foundation bolt part and
level it on the BASE surface. Also, the horizontal level should be within 0.05mm for 1m.
(3) General foundation work

(4) Foundation bolt type work

- 11-

 Use a power cable that meets the required standards. Using an inappropriate cable may cause
electrocution or fire.
 Refer to the National Electrical Code Handbook before inserting the power plug.

 To prevent any unforeseen accidents that may result from the actions of children or unqualified
personnel, put in place appropriate safeguards.

 Use the motor with the appropriate protection grade. Using the motor with an inadequate protection
grade may result in damages caused by foreign substances.
 In order to prevent damage to shaft and bearing due to vibration during transportation, it is
equipped with shaft fixing device. Please keep this fixing device before disassembly before
alignment.
 For double biaxial shaft type motors and motors for inverters, use insulated coupling.
If a non-insulated coupling is used for a biaxial motor, be sure to install a brush for shaft grounding
on both the load side and the half load side. Please contact our technical department for installation
instructions.

3.3 Removing the anti-rust additive

On the foot, shaft and the coupling beam of this motor, a waxy type anti-rust additive has been applied. In
order to remove it, use a toluene-based cleaner (ex. WD40) and wipe it off with a cloth. Removing the
additive with a grinder or a metallic tool is not recommended.

3.4 Coupling assembly

Inspect the shaft surface and inner diameter of the coupling before assembly. Apply the coupling with heat,
and make sure the gap is within 0.2 - 0.3 mm. The coupling must be balanced before assembly, and rotate
the shaft while the coupling is cooling down to prevent heat pressure and the bending moment.

3.5 Alignment
(1) Direct connection type
(A) Allowable dimensions for height error and parallel error between axis of horizontal motor and load
should not exceed the following table.
(B) You can confirm the axis alignment by using the dial gauge, and after installation, slowly rotate the
rotor by 90°, record the indicated value, and insert the appropriate shim between the motor sole and base
to adjust the deviation (the shim shall be inserted for less than 5 layers, but shall not exceed more than 2

- 12-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

to 3 mm).

<Table. Allowable range of Horizontal Motor Alignment>

(C) If the shaft alignment error is assembled too much, vibration induction and bearing damage will result.
In case of high-speed motors, adjust the value to an even smaller value.
(D) In case of sleeve bearings, align the base line of the load side shaft as shown in the picture below.

- 13-

<Vertical motor Alignments allowable range>

(2) Belt type connection type
(A) Make sure that the axes of the motor and the load machine
are parallel to each other, and connect the center of the pulleys
on both sides so that they are perpendicular to the axis. If the
center of the pulley does not match, excessive force may be
applied to the shaft and bearing, which may cause malfunction.
(B) When attaching the pulley to the shaft, lubricate it with oil,
etc., and press it in a manner that does not cause shock or
damage, like resin hammer. Be careful not to insert pulley with
excessive impact, as it may cause bearing and shaft damage.
When inserting the pulley, make sure that it is as close as possible to
the bearing side as shown on the right picture.
(C) Please select the appropriate belt for the pulley. When reusing
the existing used pulley, please consult with our technical department
and belt manufacturer for compatibility with the new motor.
(D) The V-belt tension can be calculated as follows.
As a rule, the speed of the V-belt is up to 30 m/sec. The belt sag
allowance as a linear distance from the center point of the V-belt when a vertical load is applied can be

- 14-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

calculated using the constant 0.016 as follows:

When the belt tension is excessive
Belt service life is reduced due to belt deformation
Belt and shaft overheating/cut
When the belt tension is insufficient
Belt slip and overheating
Excessive vibration and damage to motor bearing/housing
Belt deterioration and cracks
Wear on belt sides

 Wear appropriate protective gear for installation,

maintenance or repairs. Failure to do so may lead to physical injuries from the motor parts.

 Poor mechanical alignment and weak connections during the installation may lead to vibrations or
mechanical damage during operation.
 When using belt drive type, select pulley according to standardized specifications such as KS
standard. In particular, the belt tension should be adjusted three to four times after installation to
set the initial tension and the belt tension should be readjusted 24 hours after the initial extension
is completed after belt is driven. After that, adjust the belt inspection and tension together in 3-
month increments.
 Do not connect a 2P-type of high speed motor and direct type motor with a belt. This may result in
the shaft being cut and cause an accident.

3.6 Particular attention during installation

(1) The lifting equipment of the motor is designed to lift the motor only; therefore it may not be used for
other purposes.
(2) Be careful not to damage the bearings. Since the key is already installed, mount the pulley or
coupling as it is. If you need to push in the key further, support the bottom of the shaft with a wooden
support to protect the shaft. Impact to the shaft may damage the bearing or bend the shaft, which can
cause unusual noises.
(3) Since the coupling touches the end of the shaft, it must be fixed accurately and firmly so that no
hammering out occurs during operation. Hammering may cause the shaft to bend. When you remove
a hardened coupling, you should apply heat and use a coupling puller.
(4) Pay careful attention to twisted frame (soft foot) to determine the adequacy of the alignment. If
distortion is detected, insert an auxiliary shim plate or soft shoe shim to correct the difference.

- 15-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

 When tightening the bolts, please tighten with the proper torque.

 Apply heat to the coupling for installation or disassembly. Hold the pulley with a jockey before
applying heat. Apply heat evenly, and take out the coupling. Excessive force may damage the
bearings and the shaft.

4 Commissioning
4.1 Checklist before starting commissioning
(1) Check insulation resistance (applicable standard: IEEE Std 43)
Insulation resistance of stator windings should be measured by applying with an insulation
resistance meter (megger tester) suitable for rated voltage for more than 1 minute, and the power
supply cable should be separated in advance (refer to the table below).
Test Voltage(DC) for insulation
Rated Voltage (V)
Resistance (V)
< 1000 500
1000 ~ 2500 500 ~ 1000
2501 ~ 5000 1000 ~ 2500
5001 ~ 12000 2500 ~ 5000
>12000 5000 ~ 10000
Note) In case of wound type rotor, secondary induction voltage is applied as rated voltage.
The minimum value of insulation resistance that can be operated is as follows (based on 40 ℃).

- 16-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

New Stator Coil In-use Stator Coil Wound Rotor Coil

IR(at 1 min) > 1000MΩ IR(at 1 min) > 100MΩ IR(at 1 min) > 5MΩ

Note) Judge after correcting insulation resistance value at 40℃.

Generally, the insulation resistance value is inversely proportional to the temperature in relation to the
function, so compensation is required to compare the objective insulation resistance value.

※ Calibration formula: IR40 = K x IR

IR40: Insulation resistance value calibrated to 40 °C (MΩ)

K: Insulation resistance temperature correlation coefficient
( 0.5(40- Winding temperature during measurement)/10 )
IR: Insulation resistance value at temperature during measurement (MΩ)
For example:
If the winding temperature at the time of measurement is 20℃ and the measured insulation
resistance value is 3000 MΩ:
K = 0.5(40-20)/10 = 0.520/10 = 0.52 = 0.25
Therefore, IR40(MΩ) = 0.25 x 3000 MΩ = 750 MΩ
If the insulation resistance is measured to a low value, it is necessary to perform drying before
commissioning to ensure that proper insulation resistance without any trouble is secured. If there
is a space heater, run the space heater until the insulation resistance is constant to dry the motor.
(2) PI: Polarization index
Polarization index (PI) is generally defined as the ratio of the 10-minute insulation resistance to the
1-minute insulation resistance at 40 ° C, and is a key indicator of the hygroscopic state of the motor
winding. No temperature compensation is required.
The criteria are as follows.
IR Value at 10 min /
Insulation Class
IR Value at 1 min
A Class 1.5
B Class
F Class 2.0
H Class
Note) If the insulation resistance value is more than 5000 MΩ for 1 minute at 40℃, the
polarization index (PI) can be omitted.
(3) Check the main power cable connection
(A) The control circuit, overload protection device and grounding of the motor must comply with the
relevant electricity regulations.
(B) The motor must be grounded, and the winding and power supply must be consistent with the
specification on the nameplate. If the voltage and frequency of the power supply are within the

- 17-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

following range, though the motor will operate, it will run differently from the description on the
nameplate:
-. If the voltage fluctuates within ±10% of the figures on the nameplate
-. If the frequency fluctuates within ±5% of the figures on the nameplate
-. If the frequency fluctuates within ±5%, and at the same time, the voltage fluctuates within
±10% of the figures on the nameplate
(4) Be sure to check for damage to various sensors or loose connection terminals during
transportation. When connecting the cable coming from the sensors and the panel, make sure to
check the terminal number specified on the specification sheet so that the connection can be made
normally.
(5) Before connecting the space heater, apply the 500V DC voltage before connection, and if the
insulation resistance value is over 5MΩ, it is suitable for operation, and if the insulation resistance
value is abnormal, it should be replaced with the spare heater.
If you do not have a spare heater, you can obtain spare parts by contacting our sales department.
(6) For wound rotor type, check that the sliding surface of the slip ring is smooth and clean and that
the brush and slip ring are in close contact with each other.

 Physical contact with high voltages or rotating parts from the motor may cause death or serious
injury. Read this manual carefully before performing any installation, maintenance or repair work.
 Do not touch an electric part until making sure that the power is not connected. Make sure to cut
off the power before doing any maintenance or repairs.
 Follow the guidelines from the National Electrical Code Handbook codes before turning on the
power

 Excessive voltage fluctuation (±10% or more) and frequency fluctuation (±5% or more) of the
power supply applied to the motor may cause torque shortage or overheating, which may cause
malfunction during use.
 Please observe the rated voltage of the Space Heater and check whether the interlock with main
power is working. Improper voltage application can shorten the service life.

4.2 Preparation for commissioning

(1) Check if the bolts and nuts are loose, if there is any dirt, or a connector has become loose during
storage or transportation.
(2) Feed the appropriate amount of oil or grease through the oil input or grease nipple to each
bearing part.

- 18-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

 Please use the grease specified in our specifications and name plate. When mixed with other
grease types, the chemical reaction of the different grease types reduces the lubrication
performance and the possibility of bearing damage and accidents is high. If there is no
recommended grease, please use the grease of the same series (e.g. Lithium series, Diurea series,
etc.).

- Red: Not mixable. Use after completely removing the residue inside.
- Yellow: Mixable, but continuous infusion to drain the existing grease.
- Green: Mixable
 In case of forced lubrication system, select a proper orifice to maintain proper oil level.
 Please observe the oil level as shown below.

 For the lubricating oil applied to the sleeve bearings, please use the lubricant of the nameplate
attached to our product or the specification sheet submitted by our company. If there is no lubricant,
please refer to the following table and substitute it. Also, when filling up the oil, fill up the lubricant to
1/2 or 1/3 point of the oil level gauge.

 If oil is over-injected, it may cause oil leakage, so be sure to observe oil level of the oil level gauge.
 When storing the motor after installation and before commissioning, have the old grease or oil
changed.
(3) Check the alignment of the motor shaft.
(4) Check the following before the test operation:
(A) Does the rotor rotate smoothly?
(B) Is it sufficiently lubricated?
(C) Are there any missing bolts?
(D) Is there a sufficient amount of coolant?
(E) Do the machines and the protective devices work properly?
(F) Is the insulation resistance, including the lead, above the standard?
(G) Does the motor emergency stop work?
(H) Is the contact system established?
(I) Are there enough people for operating the motor? (Number of staff and their capabilities)
(J) Is the voltage appropriate?
(K) Has the past test operation result been checked?

- 20-

You may operate the motor if every item on the above list has been checked.

4.3 Caution during commissioning

(1) Performing trial operation in no-load condition (before connecting a load device)
(A) When turning on the power for the first time, check the direction of rotation while driving for about
1-2 seconds. If the direction of rotation is normal, turn off the power and wait until the shaft stops completely.
(B) Afterwards, check the rotation status, abnormal noise, and lubrication condition while rotating
without load. If forced lubrication is used, the motor must be started after the oil supply pump is started first.
If the cooling method is water-cooled type, it is necessary to start the motor after starting the cooling water
supply pump.
(C) Measure the temperature and vibration of the bearing while operating for more than 2 hours
and make sure to record it (it can be used as initial value in overhaul.)
(D) The standards for bearing and winding temperature are as follows, and should not exceed the
following.
(E) Check points for the test operation:
- Does the rotor rotate properly?
- Is there a strange or irregular noise?
- Is there a strange smell?
- Are the operating time and current appropriate?
- Does the sleeve bearing rotate at the magnetic center?
- Does the sleeve bearing provide good oiling rotation?
- Is the oil pressure of the oil pressure pump at the shaft end appropriate?
- Is there a problem at the shaft end? (Strange noise, overheating, strange smell, etc.)
- Are the inhalation / exhaustion devices operating as usual?
- Are the vibrations within the controlled value?
- Is there a problem in the system?
- Does the motor run normally when compared with other operation characteristics?
If any of the above check points is not satisfactory, correct the problem, check the status and start
the operation.

(G) Observe the bearing temperature after starting the motor. If the temperature rise rate is too high or
vibration noise is excessive, stop the motor immediately and check the cause by referring to the "Motor
problems and countermeasures".
(H) In the case of sleeve bearings, slight fluctuation in the horizontal direction may occur due to magnetic
force and pressure difference of the internal air in the magnetic center, and if the allowable range is
within 20% of total end play, it can be judged as normal (related specification - API541 Clause 2.4.9.1).
Example) If total End Play is 13mm(±6.5mm), permissible range of axial movement:
13mm x 0.2 = 2.6mm (±1.3mm)

(2) Commissioning under load
(A) Start the load with the minimum load after connecting the load device. If there is no abnormality in
the starting current, start time and voltage, gradually increase the load and test.
(B) Make sure to record the bearing temperature, vibration, and current at intervals of 30 minutes while
operating for more than 2 hours.

4.4 Ending commissioning

You may continue operation when the motor does not generate any abnormal noise or excessive
vibration after normal rotation, and stop the motor if the winding temperature and the bearing temperature
are within the specified temperature range(Temperature saturation criteria: No rise or change at 1℃/30min)

- 23-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

4.5 Cautions after test operation

Repeated test operation may result in overheating and damage to the motor. If you need to repeat the
test operation, the motor must be turned off for a sufficient amount of time between the test operations in
order to prevent overheating.

 If a continuous operation (S1) normal motor is continuously used under the repeated rated
operating condition (S3 or higher), the electric motor, mechanical or thermal shock may
shorten the service life of the motor and cause burnout. As a guideline, the maximum
number of starts in a typical application is 1000 starts per year (within 3 times a day),
recommended operation is 2 cold and 1 hot, and follow the number of starts and time specified
in the specifications. In case of frequent start-ups, please contact our technical department for
consulting.
 When a load exceeding the permissible moment of inertia of the standard motor is started, it may
cause electric shock to the motor as the starting time becomes longer, which may decrease the life of the
motor. If the allowable moment of inertia is exceeded, please contact our technical department.
 Motor startup method should be properly selected according to load characteristics. Depending on
the selection of the startup method, the torque may be insufficient for startup.
 When grease is filled excessively during operation, bearing temperature and vibration may
temporarily increase, but may stabilize after a certain period of time, so please note that this is not a
malfunction of the motor.

5. Compliance and checking point during commercial operation

5.1 Bearing
(1) Please check the temperature of the bearing every day and keep record.
(2) If abnormal noise or excessive vibration occurs, stop the motor and check the bearing condition. For
technical questions, please contact our technical department.
(3) Rolling Bearing Type
(A) Please observe the cycle indicated on the nameplate when refilling the grease.
(B) When using automatic grease injector, please set as close as possible to the cycle and amount of
injection specified on the nameplate. If it is injected, it is very likely to be burned out due to overheating
of bearings.
(C) For the 73-series bearing, follow the standards of the bearing.
(D) Calculate the grease feeding cycle for an outdoor motor to be 1/1.2 times of the standard cycle.
(E) If different feeding cycles are set for the same motor, the shorter cycle must be applied.
(F) The values are based on the ambient temperature of 40℃, and the standard for an outdoor type is
applied if the ambient temperature is 40℃∼ 50℃.
(G) If the ambient temperature is 50℃ or higher, the feeding cycle is reduced by half at every 15℃.

(H) Operating temperature of bearing.

For Univercial grease: 40°C≤T≤120°C , For heat resistant grease: 40°C≤T≤140°C
(I) For grease injection cycle and injection amount for each bearing, please refer to "12. Grease injection
cycle and amount per bearing size".
(J) Ball and roller bearings have unique noises (race Noise, click noise) of the bearing itself. This is
regarded as a normal sound, and the noises that are problematic in performance is cage noise, squeal
noise, flaw noise, and contamination noise.
- Normal sound(Race Noise)
A continuous sound (blowing sound, goes ‘-shh’) is made as the balls roll on the inner race and
the outer race regardless of the rpm.
- Normal sound (drop sound or Click Noise)
A drop sound is generated in the horizontal ball bearing as balls dropped from the bearing
make contact with the retainer and the inner race. This sound is heard as the rpm drops as
the motor stops running. A loud sound may be generated when the bearing idles before it is
stopped, but this does not indicate a problem.
- Retainer sound(Cage Noise)
This irregular metallic sound is generated as the retainer, balls, inner race and outer race
simultaneously make contact with each other regardless of the rpm. It is often heard from a
bearing with a large gap for high-speed machines.
This sound (clanging sound, goes ‘-jrrr’) can be reduced or eliminated with the application of
grease. If the retainer sound grows again, you should check the bearing (expect a worn out
retainer). This sound may not completely disappear.
- Creaking sound(Squeal Noise)
The creaking sound is often heard from a roll bearing due to an irregular operation and in
relation with the grease status and the gap. You can find a preventive bearing that will reduce
this sound, but it is not perfect. Unless the sound is accompanied with vibration, the bearing
has no problem. Normally, this sound (Grr- sound) disappears as grease is fed. In this case,
the bearing may be considered to be normal. Like the drop sound, it often grows as it idles
with the bracket.
- Scratching sound(Flaw Noise)
This sound is generated in proportion to the rpm when the outer/inner race or a ball is
scratched or cracked. This sound is normally accompanied with a vibration, but can be easily
detected as the cycle gets longer before the bearing is stopped. You can find a scratch by
turning the rotor slowly with your hand.
- Foreign substance sound(Contamination Noise)
This sound is generated by a foreign substance entering inside the bearing. It has an irregular
cycle and volume. If you leave the bearing as it is without removing the foreign substance, it
may scratch the bearing.

- 25-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

This sound (Pjj- sound) is often heard when the bearing is assembled in a dirty location.

 Excessive injection or replacement of grease may cause damage to bearings and electric motors.
Also, be careful not to add contaminants to grease and oil when filling up grease or oil
 Use specified grease. Improper application of grease may shorten the bearing life and result in
burnout.
(4) Sleeve bearing and oil lubrication type bearing
(A) Always follow the oil change cycle.
(B) Take oil samples to periodically check oil discoloration and analyze them for component analysis and
viscosity.

 Oil should not be replenished during operation. It may cause leakage and temperature rise due to
overfilling.
 The oil change period is specified on the nameplate and specification sheet, but if there is no such
information, please change oil for every 4000 hours (about 6 months) for intermittent operation and 3000
hours (about 4.5 months) for continuous operation.
 Sleeve bearings are divided into several types according to the type of motor, so refer to "12. Bearing
Structural Diagram" and contact the technical department for details.
5.2 Vibration check
(1) Please check the vibration daily and keep records.
(2) If irregular or excessive vibration occurs, stop the motor and check the bearing and alignment status.
For technical questions, please contact our technical department. If possible, obtain and send us the
vibration frequency analysis data together.

5.3 Ventilation box (with water-cooled cooler) and filter

(1) Periodically check the air flow rate of the air-cooled vent box. If a temperature sensor is attached to the
suction side and the exhaust side, check the system regularly to stop the motor and check the condition of
the ventilation box and fan when sudden temperature difference occurs.
(2) If the ventilation box is equipped with a filter, periodically clean it by setting the inspection cycle itself.
If the filter is clogged by foreign matter, a reduction in the cooling air flow rate may cause a rise in the
temperature of the motor and the bearing. Especially for motors installed in outdoor or dusty places, please
set the inspection period shorter for operation. If a differential pressure gauge is attached to the filter, always
check the pressure change to check whether the filter is clogged. In case of water-cooler, please remove
the cooling water when motor is stopped. If not removed, the cooler may be damaged by freezing.

 Do not change or clean the filter during operation. When the filter is removed, there is a high possibility
that foreign substances will be drawn into the motor as the outside air flows into the motor suddenly.

- 26-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

(3) In the case of a water-cooled cooler, check whether there is a leak, and operate the leak sensor to
ensure that it is under constant control. Also, if there is any water filled in the water pan, it may be filled with
water due to dew condensation, so check the sight glass and if filled with water, drain the water using the
drain plug. If it is operated continuously without discharge, the leakage sensor may operate and the motor
may stop abnormally.

5.3 Winding temperature check

(1) Please check the winding temperature every day to keep records.
(2) Since the winding temperature varies with the load, it is necessary to record/manage the correlation of
the temperature with the load. Also, if the temperature is hunting, stop the motor and check the cable
connection to the terminal block in the auxiliary terminal box. Also, determine the resistance of the terminal
when it stops by measuring and comparing the resistance of the terminal with the following table.

 Separate the cable connected to the panel from the auxiliary terminal box with the power cable or
secure a sufficient separation distance. It may cause hunting or malfunction due to noise.

- 27-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

6. Maintenance and Inspection

You need to observe the operation and the status of the motor every day, and check the following in
accordance with the routine inspection plan:
◇ Cleanliness ◇ Insulation and winding
◇ Lubrication and bearing ◇ Vibration

6.1 Cleaning
It is important to keep the motor clean to prevent any problems. Make sure to keep the machine and the
surrounding parts clean from dust, oil and other substances which may come in through ventilation
components or may be produced during operation.

 Keep the external surfaces of the motor free from dust, oil, grease, etc. Verify that ventilation
passages are unobstructed. Poor ventilation may cause fire or overheating.

6.2 Humidity
Open the drain plug and remove condensed water periodically. Always operate the space heater if the
motor is not in use for an extended period of time.

6.3 Maintenance of the Stator Winding

(1) Insulation capability of the winding deteriorates from electric, mechanical and environmental stress as
time passes.
An insulation layer that has deteriorated may easily absorb humidity, and this situation becomes evident
when dust is accumulated on the surface. Weakened insulation resistance or leakage current may
cause tracking, and even damage the insulation layer. To prevent such accidents, check the dust and
humidity level of the insulator and take the appropriate measures through routine diagnosis.
(2) For the insulation resistance with the earth, measure the insulation resistance between the motor
terminal and the earth periodically.
Check the insulation resistance before restarting the motor, since a motor easily absorbs humidity
when it is not in operation. Please be mindful about replacing the insulation layers to ensure
adequate resistance.
(3) The magnitude of the insulation resistance value shall not be less than the value specified in "4.1 (1)
Insulation resistance inspection" and the extent of the change shall be controlled so that it is not
significantly lower than the previous measurement value
(4) Check for dust, oil, carbon dust and salt when inspecting the surface insulation resistance. If any
damage is found, measure the insulation resistance of the winding surface.

- 28-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

(5) Check the insulation resistance especially on the dusted part of the winding at the pitch of
approximately 10-15 mm. If the insulation resistance to the earth or the surface insulation resistance
is outside the controlled standard, please clean, dry, paint and apply varnish. Even if the insulation
resistance is within the controlled standard, if any damage is found during the inspection, clean the
surface of the winding with an air blower or a dry cloth.
(6) If tracking is found on the winding surface and the insulation resistance has deteriorated even after
taking the appropriate measures, please contact Hyosung for the opinion of an expert. The insulated
winding must be kept clean against dust, oil, metal dust or other dirt.
Maintain cleanliness with the following methods:
(A) Vacuum cleaning
Vacuum the dust or dirt, preferably by using a compressed air powered vacuum. A compressed
air powered vacuum cleaner sucks in dust and dirt without damaging the insulation or other
parts.
(B) Cleaning with compressed air
Using compressed air is convenient for removing dust and dirt in hard to reach areas, such as
the air duct or between the windings. Use dry air and make sure the air pressure is not too
high.
(C) Cleaning with solvents
Oil and grease may cause the deterioration of the insulation and allow dust to gather, while also
obstructing smooth ventilation; it should be wiped off with a cloth. Please be cautious when
using a solvent, as it has a low ignition point and it is hazardous to the human body. If the
winding has been moved or the varnish has deteriorated, you should apply varnish again.
(7) When tapping the wedge inserted in the stator slot makes a dull sound, it is recommended to have the
wedge replaced or varnish treated. Please take caution not to tap with excessive force and or use objects
with sharp tip or a pointed edge for tapping, as it may damage the wedge.
(8) The lead wire from the stator connection to the terminal box should be inspected for damage caused by
hardening or deterioration of the insulation sheath, and replaced if damaged. For replacement technical
inquiries, please contact our technical department.

6.4 Maintenance of Rotor Bar

The rotor bar and the end ring of the rotor of a squirrel cage 3-p induction motor are subjected to thermal
stress caused by the rise in temperature during operation, electromagnetic force caused by magnetic flux
and current, and centrifugal force caused by rotation. Therefore, a gap occurs between the rotor bar and
the slot, and as this gap grows wider, it generates an electronic tone from the vibrating rotor bar or cuts the
rotor bar. Therefore, if any change or looseness of the rotor bar is found during a routine inspection, you
should inject epoxy resin through the slot to prevent vibration and movement of the rotor bar. Contact the
Hyosung Technical Division for more details on maintenance methods. During the inspection, the rotor must

- 29-
Induction Motor Operating Instructions Control No. : HVM-0206 REV. 2.1

be pulled out, and every part of the rotor bar must be inspected. In addition, measure the run-out of the
shaft during maintenance and correct it if it is 0.05mm or more (2P is managed within 0.02mm).

6.5 Relubrication
Excessive amounts of oil or grease cause leakage and the bearings to overheat. Therefore, it is important
to maintain the adequate level of oil. The lubricant also protects the bearings from water, oil and rust. Make
sure to keep the inlets clean and ensure that the lubricant does not pick up any dirt.
When using a high-pressure feeder, be careful not to insert an excessive amount of lubrication. The ball
bearing is shipped with sufficient amount of rust-resistant grease from the factory, which should last for
awhile.
(1) How to apply oil and grease
(A) Stop the motor and cool it down sufficiently.
(B) Clean the lubricated part.
(C) Remove hardened oil and grease from the lubrication inlets.
(D) Feed grease slowly by operating the compressed oil feeder.
(E) Idle the motor for about 10 minutes so that the excessive grease is leaked out completely.
(F) If the motor has a long grease pipe, clean the pipe thoroughly before lubrication.
(G) If it is necessary to feed oil during operation, be careful not to feed an excessive amount. Idle
the motor for about 10 minutes with the lubrication plug open (only applicable for grease using
motor).
(2) For Sleeve bearing type, refer to "(4) Sleeve Bearing and Oil Lubrication Type Bearing" of "5.1 Bearing".

 Excessive or insufficient lubrication may damage the bearings and the motor. Make sure there is no
contaminant contained in the lubricant.
 Use the designated grease and oil. Unauthorized lubricants may reduce the life span of the bearings
and cause damage from overheating.
 Failure to refill oil or grease will cause damage to bearing and motor. Make sure to match the oil level
as there is a possibility of oil leakage in case of overfill. Also, make sure that contaminants don’t get
inside when filling oil.
 If the contamination is severe or the temperature is abnormal, it is recommended to open the bearing
housing every 6 months to 1 year and check the condition of the housing and grease.
 If the grease deteriorates or becomes dirty, clean the bearing housing area and replace the grease.

6.6 Overhauling the motor

(1) Check before disassembling
(A) Range of work (To which point will the inspection be performed?)

(2) Disassembly and assembly procedures
The following procedure outlines the general work procedure. Each process must be carried out
thoroughly, and try to secure safety and protect devices. When overhauling two or more motors of the
same kind, the part boxes should be distinguished to prevent the parts from being mixed up. When
recording all measurements, if any problem is found in comparison to the control value, please contact the
Hyosung Technical Division. (Refer to "10. Standard structure diagram and 12. Standard assembly diagram"
for disassembly and assembly according to the major types.)
(A) Pull the power cable

(E) Remove the coupling & the external fan cover
(F) Remove the external fan
(G) Measure the air gap & the shaft concentricity
(H) Remove the brackets & the bearing parts
(I) Pull out the rotor
(J) Check each part

 Wear appropriate protective gear when performing any installation, maintenance or repair work.
Motor parts may cause injuries.

 Do not repair or modify the motor at your own discretion. It may reduce the life span of the motor or
cause an accident.

6.7 Handling waste

Waste from the motor must be handled as general industrial waste. Leaving parts outdoors or failure to
handle it as industrial waste may cause pollution.
