Question

2. Find a pair of non-negative numbers that have a product of 162 and minimize the sum of two times the first
number and second number with a closed bounded interval of [1,10].

Expert Solution

 Step 1

Our Aim is to find a pair of non − negative numbers that have a product
of 162 and minimizes the sum of two times the first number and second
number with a closed bounded interval [1,10].
 Step 2
Let a and b be two pair of non − negative numbers,
Since, it is given that a × b = 162  ⇒ b = 162a − (1)
Also, 2a + b = M (Sum) (Let us Assume)
From − (1), we have 2a + 162a = M
Differentiating both sides, we have : −
dM = d (2a + 162 )
da da a
⇒ 0 = 2 − a2 162
⇒ 162a2 = 2
⇒ a2 = 1622
⇒ a2 = 81
⇒ a = ±9
Since, numbers are positive so a = 9
From (1), we have : −
y = 1629 = 18
Answer ⇒ Hence, pair of numbers are (9,18).
