INTRODUCTION:

Social media has become a common sight in many organisations. It has been regarded as an
important means of personal and organizational communication. However, the organization faces
big challenges toward the threats of social media utilization among employees such as disruption of
their productivity. Thus, this study conducted to identify the types of social media used by
employees at the workplace and its impact on the employees’ productivity at the workplace. It was
found that it was found that the social media has become a common medium of communication
for employees to collaborate, integrating and sharing knowledge among colleagues in organization.
Further, it is categorized into social network (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.)
email, blog, messaging, forums, Wikis and many others. The use of social media has brought
benefits and challenges to the organizations. Further, the positive and negative impacts of social
media usage were presented as well. Most of the studies selected indicated that social media usage
is beneficial to the personal and organization productivity. It was found that most of the studies
provided their finding based on cross-sectional data, in which they are unable to provide actual
causality of the usage factor that really impacts the productivity of the employees at the workplace.
This review is expected to contribute knowledge and practices for future study in identifying the
causality of social media usage on employee productivity. This is important as the causality of the
usage factor that contribute to harmful effects to the organization productivity can be tackled and
intervened by using the intervention model of internet addiction.

 
The fame of social networking sites is relatively recent and the major effect of online social
networking on employee productivity has not received much attention. The reason most likely
lies in the social nature of social networking sites, which is assumed that they have a negative
effect on employee productivity and not bear organizational benefit. For some years employers
have had to deal with issues concerning employees; internet use via organizational information
and communication technology. In the organizational context the problems associated with
online social networking technology as well as the nature of the content on such sites present
employers with a dilemma. On the other hand, the opportunities that can present to
organizations should be investigated in order to make informed decisions before simply
discarding this type of communication and collaboration technology.
Impact of social media on employee productivity has become a contemporary research
phenomenon. In fact many , industry and scholars have studies conducted research on this
phenomenon came across various conclusions. Studies have concluded that social media have
implications on employee productivity hence organizations needs to pay a keen attentions on
usage of social media in the work place. Similar to the organizations tertiary institution and
educational background apply and benefit from various terms.
The rise of the social media in recent years have changed a lot in the way,s of employee
network and share data, with positive and negative implications for the employer relationships.
Whilst social media presents employers and employees with a wealth of opportunities and
benefits as a new communication channel. It also gives a forum enabling them to speak much
more quickly and with grater impact. Whether they are bad mouthing employees or making
derogatory comments about colleagues.

Theoretical background:
This study shows that social networking become an integral part of everyone’s life and have a
strong impact. Social networking affects working situations of employees of banks too.  For
exploring key issue literature of different authors was studied and thoroughly discussed. Views
of different authors and personalities (which as having high designations in well reputed
organizations) presented in this article. Correlation and Regression analysis is done for primary
collected data, it showed that using of social networking have strong impact on employee
performance. Social networking by employee’s affect their
skills/ability/knowledge/qualification, productivity/outcomes and motivation level
Social media are perhaps the most influential communication tools in the world today. They
have invaded almost every single household. The number of users is on the rise globally. In the
world, the extensive use of social media indicates that the internet has the potential to become
the most dominant platform through which every segment of the society can communicate .
Thanks to social networking, the world today has turned into a small village where
communication has become as fast as light. Social media are used by individuals as well as
businesses and are becoming highly essential and indispensable. Over the last two decades
digital technologies have invaded the globe and the Internet has reached almost every corner
of the world where they are used by individuals, companies, journalists, and governments etc.

Background of the study:


Today’s business world has been faced with momentous challenges on a global scale ranging
from financial crisis, ever increasing competition, dwindling and unpredictable flow of natural
resources such as oil, rising cost of living and reduced profits. Revitalizing and possibly even
reinventing the culture of organizations and the way they do business is vital to achieving
increased levels of workplace productivity and employee satisfaction (Pitt & Bennett, 2008).
Employees who are regarded as assets of the organizations have a greater role to play to make
organizations succeed in this ever changing environment. Economies and organizations are in
continuous change where the reliance on manual workers is shifting to productivity of
knowledge workers. knowledge workers account for more than two-thirds of the workforce
with digital literacy and social networking becoming a mandatory skill in life not just for
individuals but also organizations. Social networking is a way in which many individuals come
together and form many sized groups. These groups may be big, small, formal, informal,
intentional or unintentional. They are an organized method through which groups are formed,
help is acquired, information is conveyed, and actions are taken to achieve certain outcomes.
When it comes to online social networking, websites are commonly used. These websites are
known as social networking sites (SNS) which include sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube,
Instagram, LinkedIn and Skype to name a few which have led to fundamental changes in the
ways people interact as employees and also organizations .
