PROBLEM STATEMENT

A study of the leadership style(s) employed at M&G Industrial Maintenance Services Ltd and the

impact it has on productivity for the month of February 2021.

3
OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this study were:

∙ To identify the leadership style(s) employed at M&G Industrial Maintenance Services Ltd. ∙

Discuss the leadership style(s) used by M&G Industrial Maintenance Services Ltd. ∙

Determine the impact the employed leadership style(s) have on productivity.

4
BACKGROUND/OVERVIEW

M&G Industrial Maintenance Services Ltd is a small business owned and operated by Mark

Green. The business started operation in 2014. The business specializes in repair and

maintenance services of all make and model forklifts such as man lifts and pallet trucks and also

rents them as well as other machines. It is located at Freetown Square, Freetown, Clarendon.

For any business to be successful, a good leader has to be present. A leader is defined as the head

of a business. The researchers of this project, who aim to be future entrepreneurs, wanted to find

out how a good leader runs his business, that being, what leadership styles are employed by this

leader. “A leadership style refers to a leader's characteristic behaviors when directing, motivating,

guiding, and managing groups of people.” (Kendra Cherry, 2020) There are four types of

leadership styles. They are:

∙ Democratic Leadership
∙ Autocratic Leadership
∙ Laissez- faire Leadership
∙ Charismatic Leadership
The main objective of this study is to see how the leader of the chosen business runs his business,

that is, the leadership style chosen by them and how the chosen leadership style impacts

productivity within the workplace. At the end of the research, the information can be used to

assist managers in the choice of leadership styles used to improve productivity in their

organizations. It is important for a business to have a good leader who uses a good leadership

style. Without a good leader a business will lose productivity as well as performance and this

may lead to loss of jobs, bankruptcy or even closure of the business hence it is keen that a good

leader is head of the business.

5
METHODOLOGY

A questionnaire and an interview were chosen by the researchers as their data collection

instruments. Primary and secondary data collection methods were also used to assist the research.

There were limitations to the two forms of data. With secondary data, the information collected

might be outdated, vague or even inaccurate. Primary data however, required a lot of time to

collect the required data.

A digital questionnaire created on the Google Forms website consisting of 10 closed ended

questions was issued via a WhatsApp link to the workers of the business. This method was

chosen to ensure confidentiality among respondents as well as being the easiest method to

administer and receive data. The data collection period was one week spanning from February

28, 2021 to March 6,2021. A total of 15 responses were received.

An over-the-phone interview was conducted by the researchers with the business owner on

February 26, 2021. The interviewee was asked 1 closed ended question and 4 open ended

questions. An interview was chosen as it allowed the researchers to get detailed and thorough

information directly from the head of the business.

FINDING STATEMENTS
As seen in Figure 2, more than half the workers (53%) found the employed leadership style to be

satisfactory to excellent ,13% indicated it could be improved but none indicated that it needed to

be changed. They did however have recommendations on how the leader could improve the

current leadership. The most picked areas were better task assigning skills and communication.

All respondents indicated being motivated to do work and also indicated a score of 3 and over on

a scale of 1 to 5 of how productive they believe the business is (see Table 1).

From the interview conducted, it was found that a democratic leadership style is employed. The

business owner indicated that he motivates workers by doing actions such as praising and gifting

them. The leader also indicates that he takes responsibility if a team member doesn’t carry out

tasks and that he communicates with them to ensure that work is done. He sees his current

leadership style as sufficient hence will continue employing it. He also states areas such as

communication and task assigning skills which he could improve to maximize productivity.
12
CONCLUSION

M & G Industrial Maintenance Service Ltd.’s leader employs a democratic leadership style and it

is productive. This was because employees were motivated to do work, saw their productivity

rate as high and that the leader sees the importance of cooperating with his employees and sees

his employed style in the same light as his employees. The researchers concluded that the

employees are satisfied with the current leadership style however do see areas that if aided would

improve productivity within the business. The researchers also concluded that the actions of a

leader are directly connected to the motivation of employees and that it is important that leaders

examine themselves to see areas that they can improve on to increase relationships with

employees and productivity in the long run.

13
RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the research it was revealed that communication and task assigning skills done by the

leader were areas that could be improved. If these areas are improved, they would greatly

improve the leadership style as both are important areas of the democratic leadership style.

Better communication will improve relationships between workers and the boss and if tasks are

better assigned, work can be done quicker and more efficiently increasing productivity.

Productivity can always be increased, as there will always be areas that we imperfect humans can

improve on hence a good leader will recognize this and act accordingly to ensure he is always

increasing his business’s productivity.
