TASK: Read the following dialogue aloud with your teacher. David and Norma are coworkers. They are talking
about Norma's daily routine and about their current activities. Pay attention to the adverbs of frequency and
other time expressions, to the verbs in the present simple and the verbs in the present continuous.

David: Norma, what are your working hours?

Norma: I arrive at work at 9 a.m. and I often go home at 5 p.m.

David: Where do you work?

Norma: I work as an assistant in a language school.

David: Do you get up early?

Norma: I usually get up at 7 a.m.

David: What do you do at work?

Norma: In the morning I always read the newspaper, then I talk with colleagues in meetings.

David: What do you do at lunchtime?

Norma: I eat with coworkers, and I sometimes surf the Internet.

David: What do you do on weekends?

Norma: I sleep a bit in the morning.

Vocabulary: adverbs of frequency


Adverbs of frequency show how often an action happens.

100% I always play tennis on Tuesdays.

80% He or She usually works in the afternoon.

75% They often drink coffee in the morning.

50% We sometimes get up late on the weekend / on weekends.

30% I occasionally surf the Internet at lunchtime.

10% You rarely read the newspaper in the evening.

0% We never go home late in the summer / in July.

Adverbs of frequency are placed before the verb, except for 'to be'.

Example:
I sometimes talk with my neighbor.
She is always happy!

does not = doesn't
With other verbs than 'to be' the auxiliary 'do' is used to ask a question in the present simple. The form is 'does' in the third
person singular.

The present continuous


We use the present continuous to talk about temporary actions/situations or actions happening now.

The present continuous is formed with the auxiliary 'be' and the present participle (-ing form).

Example: I am working today.

Affirmative Negative Interrogative

I am working. I am not working. Am I working?

You are working. You are not working. Are you working?

He/she/it is working. He/she/it is not working. Is he/she/it working?

We are working. We are not working. Are we working?

They are working. They are not working. Are they working?

Contracted forms
am = ('m)
is = ('s)
are = ('re)
am not = ('m not)
is not = (isn't)
are not = (aren't)

Some verbs cannot be used in the present continuous tense because they describe a state.

Verbs of possession - own, have, belong.

I own a car.
She has a car.
The car belongs to her.

Verbs of the mind - believe, know, understand, think, forget.

With the following time clauses you need to use the present continuous:

- at the moment
- (right) now
- currently
- this week / this month / this year
- today

With the following time clauses you need to use the present simple:

- every day / every week / every weekend


- in the morning / in the afternoon / in the evening
- on Mondays / on Tuesdays...
- on weekends
- once a week / twice a week
- at night
