Emergency Substitute Plan

Grade: 7th (Example)

Subject: English (Example)

Teacher: Mr. Hernandez (Example)

Date: 03/09/2022 (Example)

Introduction

Good morning! I want to thank you in advance for taking care of my class/classes. I left detailed

instructions for today so please follow every instruction unless something happens that requires

you to follow a different set of instructions. The daily schedule is located on my desk, classroom

wall, and entrance door.

Helpful materials: I left a seating chart, attendance list, and a paper that includes the extension

numbers for other teachers and staff members to call them if you need help or have a question.

Please use the rest of the tools to check where each student has to sit and who was in the

classroom.

Behavior expectations: The students are expected to meet your behavior expectations, meaning

that as a teacher you expect each student to behave well enough, be respectful, and responsible in

the classroom. Misbehavior is not acceptable and must be taken seriously. Therefore, if one or

more students are consistently displaying unacceptable behavior, feel free to leave names in your

note. Please do the same for students who met your expectations and were displaying good

behavior throughout the class time.

Restroom & Nurse: One student at a time is allowed to go to the bathroom or visit the nurse if

needed. If a student is out and another needs to go as well because it is an “emergency,” please

let that student go before any accidents happen. Do not forget to do the same with nurse visits.
Please remind them to fill up the restrooms log that is at the wall next to the entrance door, every

student that leaves the room needs to sign it before going and after arriving.

Schedule

1st Period: This period is ahead, so they will complete a few assignments and interact in

activities. The students will get their Chromebooks from the laptop cart to complete the bellwork

for today. Start by counting in 5s, say “1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 come to get your Chromebooks,” and

continue until you reach the number 30. Next, instruct them to take out their notebook to write

for their weekly journal. Please remind students to work individually and quietly. Give students a

short conversation time to let everyone share their thoughts about this week’s journal writing

with their classmates. Finally, direct students to the next lesson topic, which will be located in

Google classroom in the “Lessons” section. Normally, there is a PowerPoint presentation

introducing the next lesson with an assignment or activity for students to complete if possible.

Since this class is ahead and completed their project last week, they will have access to the next

lesson content so they can get familiar with what is next.

Reliable/helpful students: Andrian, Brenda, Cole, and Dylan (Example)

2nd Period: Are still working on their group project. Please start by instructing them to complete

their bellwork, once each student has completed it. Tell them to start with their journal writing,

but do not give them time for discussion afterward. They should continue to work on their

project and remind them to work as a team. Communication and initiative are important so if one

or more students are not trying, please check with them individually and encourage them to try.

Walk around the room to make it easier for the students to reach you and for you to check with

every group member, especially with group number 4 because they might need extra help.

Reliable/helpful students: Andrea and Bruno (Example)

3rd Period: Need to complete a test before beginning anything else. This period is the only one

that needs to complete this test from all of my periods. Start by instructing them to complete the

“7th Grade Literature” test in Galileo. Please remind them to work individually and avoid talking

until everyone is done. Students who finish early will start with the bellwork and continue to

follow the previous directions. Then, the journal writing and eventually continue to work on their

group project. Most groups are close to finishing their group project so expect several of them to

finish before the period ends.

Reliable/helpful students: Andre, Bryan, Carlos, Diana, Emma, and Francisco (Example)

4th Period: Are still working on their group project. Please start by instructing them to complete

their bellwork, once each student has completed it. Tell them to start with their journal writing,

but do not give them time for discussion afterward. Then, instruct them to continue to work on

their group project and once again remind them to work as a team. Encourage and motivate them

if possible because they could need it to make huge progress in this assignment or even complete

it before the end of the period. Make sure to walk around the room unless you get tired, if so,

then sit and rest for a bit. Help as much as possible!

Reliable/helpful students: Alex, Brendan, and Carly (Example)

5th Period: Lunch and planning. No students show up so you can take your lunch and take a

break until the next period.

6th Period: Are still working on their group project. Follow the previous directions provided for

the 2nd and 4th periods. However, make sure you check with Frankie and Marie because both

require extra help and are working individually on other assignments that are not related to the

group project. If they need a break in between the work, please make sure you give them 10

minutes only. Feel free to leave a comment on how both did today because I would appreciate it.
Reliable/helpful students: Amy, Cillian, Magic, and Nabetse (Example)

7th Period: Planning. This means that no students show up to this period and you can take a

break. However, I would recommend contacting the office and checking if someone may need

your assistance. We love people who want to help out and your help would be appreciated as

well as well received!

8th Period: Are still working on their group project. Students will complete their bellwork and

afterward have them start their journal, but not do give them time for discussion. Most groups

should be close to finishing their project so please make sure that each group lets you know

when they are done to give them further instructions. If each group is done and you have at least

more than 10 minutes of class time. Feel free to choose between giving them time to share what

they wrote in their journal with their classmates or moving on to the PowerPoint presentation for

the next lesson.

Reliable/helpful students: Ava, Bernardo, Camila, Daniel, and Edwin (Example)

Homeroom: There will be another class joining you after the 8th period is over. These will be my

students from the 1st period. Instruct them to sit on their assigned seats and take attendance.

Each student will take out their Chromebooks and place them inside the laptop cart before they

leave. Tell the students to look around the room for trash and instruct them to help you put it

where it belongs. Please make sure to check that every laptop is connected correctly so all of

them can be charged and ready for the next day. After that, wait for the bell to ring to dismiss the

students. Please check the “Afternoon duty” section before this happens.

Afternoon duty: I have afternoon duties in area E so take a look at the school map that is on my

desk, if for some reason you cannot find the map or have a question, please call the office to help

identify my designated area to cover.

Thank you once again for covering my class and following my long list of instructions. I would

appreciate it if you leave a note about today, and I would love it if you could make it as detailed

as possible. Have a great day!
