Cross-Hole Sonic Logging (CSL) Report March, 2022

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Cross-Hole Sonic Logging is a common method of assessing the cast-in-place concrete foundations
since the 1960’s. It is now used extensively throughout the world & on many significant construction
projects. Its popularity can be attributed to two main factors; firstly, there is no depth limitation to the
method & secondly, the apparent case of interpreting results, compared with low strain type integrity
tests. However, if the equipment operator is not able to view all of the raw data& select appropriate
filters, it can be possible to come to the wrong conclusion and interpreted results incorrectly. It has
not been unknown for piles to be condemned and replaced because of problems with tube installation
such as-
 Tube debonding.
 Poor tube joints.
 Joint wrapping.
 Bent tubes.

Bent tubes these can all appear to alter the past arrival time of the signal, even though the true
velocity of the signal in concrete between the tubes is normal. The ASTM D6760 is entitled
“Standard Test Method for Integrity Testing of Concrete Deep Foundations by Ultrasonic Cross-hole
Testing.”

This report contains the results of the Cross-hole Sonic Logging (CSL) Test performed by Afra
Corporation Ltd. on one cast in situ pile. Entrusted by Roads & Highways Department This
monitoring Project is commissioned by HALLA-MIR AKHTER JV. The chosen pile type for this
project is the cast in situ pile (Diameter-1200mm).

2.0 OBJECTIVE

Sonic logging test is used to deduct any defects in bored piles. The test system consist of an ultrasonic
pulse transmitter probe and a receiver probe that are connected to an ultrasonic pulse generator.

During the test, the probes are lowered to the bottom of the access tubes in the pile (the tubes had
been installed during the concreting of the bored piles). The arrival time of the pulse at each level as
the probes higher is digitally recorded on the sonic logging computer unit. A significant delay in the
signal transmission or a change in a signal strength may indicate porous concrete, inclusions or
defects in the pile.
