Message from General Secretary, MSA

Dear Batch of 2013,

Welcome to Faculty of Management Studies and congratulations on having qualified one of the toughest
B-school entrance procedures in the world. You have become part of a 57 year old institute which was the
first in India to offer management training for professional managers in the form of an MBA part time
program. FMS has always been a leadership crucible and our alumni have made their mark in every
conceivable field from entrepreneurship to politics and of course in the corporate world.

It is not just the right head-start in your careers that you will receive at FMS. The journey itself will be quite
unlike anything that you expect and will leave you with life-long memories. Unique challenges, fierce but
healthy competition, plenty of celebrations and abundant opportunities to showcase your talents are some
of the things that you can expect at FMS.

We realize that you will bring diverse experiences to this institution from all over the country as well as from
overseas. We hope to learn from you as much as we teach you how to build a stellar career in the B-school.
Each and every person from my batch is committed to ensuring that you get the maximum out of your MBA
experience. Once you become part of this institute, your performance will reflect on all the batches of FMS
who preceded yours as well as on those who will succeed you. Therefore, in every possible way, our success
lies in yours and vice versa.
In a B-school, it is important to forge close relationships among all the students and with the alumni. These
networks will serve you well throughout your career right from an intern to a CXO level. This has been one of
the strengths of FMS as our relatively smaller batch sizes ensure that each student interacts with all of his/her
batch mates as well as with the senior batch. In fact, many of the activities that we have planned for you are
specifically designed to dramatically accelerate interactions among ourselves; much more than would
otherwise be possible.
FMS is a truly student-driven campus where a majority of activities are completely owned and driven by us. It
is my honor and privilege to introduce our student body, Management Science Association (MSA) to you.
MSA’s breadth and depth of activities make it an organization without a peer in Indian B-schools. Right from
the design of the Admission Brochure to the website; from conducting industry workshops and guest lectures
to organizing national level fests, from helping the placement team to mentoring the incoming batch; every
activity is meticulously planned and executed by the students. MSA owns the entire gamut of student
initiatives at FMS.

As soon as you step into FMS, each and every one of you will become part of MSA. Our core strength stems
from the strong processes that have been put in place over the course of many years. One of the joys of
being at FMS is discovering these processes and making them stronger as every batch prior to yours has
done.

So, welcome once again, batch of 2013. Rest assured, you have made an excellent choice and have taken a
significant step towards a successful career.

Regards,

Arpan Srivastava

Message from the Secretary of Finances, MSA

Dear Batch of 2013,

I would like to extend my heartiest congratulations and welcome you all to Faculty of Management Studies,
Delhi. It’s a matter of great honour and pride to be a part of the legacy and culture of one of the most
prestigious institutes of the country. This place will not only serve as an ideal platform for giving a boost to
your career but will also be instrumental in developing a rich thought process which will ensure that you
succeed in every facet of life.

One of the unique features of FMS is the Management Science Association (MSA), a completely student
driven body, which is the heart of FMS and is responsible for most of the activities that take place on campus.
It is a juncture where ideas meet, initiatives are taken and results achieved. It thereby develops in an
individual a sense of ownership, builds the requisite skill sets and provides an exposure to real time
management.

In order to successfully organize the wide range of events in accordance with the stature of a premier
institute like us, we require the necessary amount of funds. These funds that are mainly generated from the
member’s contribution finance the smooth functioning of the large gamut of activities, both existing and
new, that the MSA undertakes every year. It also enables us to organize and manage all the additional
facilities that we, the students, require during the course of our MBA education. The annual contribution fee
for this fund is Rs 25,000. MSA Finances is the official custodian of the fund and constitutes of a Finance
Secretary, assisted by a Joint Finance Secretary from the first year.

I look forward to interacting with you people and accompany you in the quest of your dreams. I wish you all
the very best. In case of any query regarding the payment to be made, please feel free to contact me.

Regards,

Dear Batch of 2013,

On behalf of the Media Relations Team, I extend my heartiest congratulations to all of you and

Any good Business school requires a strong media and communication channel to gain competitive

Please keep in mind that FMS should be the means to an end for you and not the end of your journey in

success in the business world, in the foreseeable future, and to build contacts with your batch mates,
who’ll be the next big things of the business fraternity in India, and more importantly, will be your
friends for life.
Fiesta – An interface between us and the world

other excellent B-schools and how we have managed to stay way ahead of the competition. Fiesta
encompasses all the management disciplines. The flagship event of Fiesta is Icon which will be entering
its 4th edition this year. This is an event which is keenly anticipated in the calendars of the biggest B-

Message from the President – VIHAAN: The Social Service Cell

Congratulations batch of 2013 and heartiest welcome to all.

Determination and Aspiration are the keys to any achievement, and if any place assures you of the
requirements and the results, FMS is it. They say you get what you give to life, and nothing could be
more apt in describing the next two years that you are going to spend here.

The society works towards providing an opportunity to use whatever we learn here in giving back to
the society in one’s own capacity. Apart from working with NGOs and non-profit organizations, we
work with the corporates and partner them in their CSR programs. The society is actively engaged in
ground activities such as Blood and Eye donation camps, guest lectures, live projects, seminars and
counseling sessions for the underprivileged etc on issues currently relevant to the society, or which
may be so in the near future.

Vihaan has evolved into a society with a cause to behold, and a cause which is not inspired by
personal gains, but is motivated by social concern and a sense of responsibility. We don’t work
towards a profitable future, but for a more prosperous one.

You are fortunate to get these marvels in life, but many people in the society are suffering even if
they are not wholly responsible for it. So, life bestows humans with the opportunity to understand
these concerns and be sensitive towards these issues. Vihaan will attempt to present you with such
realities of life. I would expect that this society succeeds in sowing a seed of a responsible
citizenship within you right from the moment you enter the corporate world.

It has been three years since Vihaan came into existence, and the work done by the society has been
appreciated and encouraged by all, press included. We intend to keep up the good work already
done by those who have treaded the path before us, and would like to take this opportunity to
invite you to join us in strengthening the cause this society promotes.

My best wishes for the journey ahead!

Message from the Secretary – Alumni Relations

Dear Batch of 2013,

Team Alumni Relations acts as the body to facilitate interaction among the Alumni, students and
faculty. It acts as the crucial interface between our Alumni and our institute and acts as the
executive of what FMS Alumni Association envisages for the institute. It not only provides perhaps
the best platform to students to learn from the industry experiences of our distinguished Alumni
and how to fare well on the corporate front but also a great opportunity for networking. Over the
past half a century, our institute has produced some of the best Corporate honchos who have
brought glory and won several laurels for it. If India Inc. is on its way to becoming a global
superpower, a significant portion of it is our Alumni’s contribution. It is here that Team Alumni
Relations plays a significant role, to tap this immense potential by fostering ties with the best in the
industry.

With activities like organising FMS Annual Alumni Dinner, Annual City Chapter Meets, Annual Picnics
and new initiatives like GAMA, CXO on campus etc., the team seeks to provide maximum
opportunities to students to leverage on our strong alumni base. While, publication of Souvenir and
Footprints keeps our Alumni updated regarding the latest happenings on campus, our newly
designed website www.fmsalumni.in offers a great platform to establish communication with our
Alumni all over the globe. Apart from these, Silver Jubilee reunions help keep that bond established
between our senior alumni and their Alma Mater, enabling them to relive their days on campus
once again.

It is our constant endeavour to grow from strength to strength and Team Alumni Relations is indeed
a significant stake holder in achieving that mission of 10000 members of FMS Alumni Association!
We hope that, we would be able to effectively tap the immense power of the extensive FMS Alumni
Base and continue to enhance the lines of communication with the Alumni through various activities
and initiatives.

If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision
wherever it takes him.

-John F. Kennedy
Welcome Leaders!!

There is a specific reason as to why I referred you all as Leaders and not ‘Batch of 2012’ or ‘Dear All’.
It is my belief that whatever you may or may not learn at this great institute, no matter how low you
score in your academics and how high during the placements, one thing which FMS would make out
of you is great Leaders. As someone rightly said

“The only real training for leadership is leadership.”

Competition, Pressure, All Nighters and Academics are the most common words that find its way
when you talk about life in a B School. The Cultural Society at FMS questions this very notion and
makes you think otherwise.

The Cultural Society strives to make you feel relaxed in the hectic B-School life and focuses on
promoting and showcasing the talent of the students on campus. Be it inducting new students into
the FMS family, to battling it out in the numerous quizzes and Debates in the yearlong competitions
to partying at a disc all through the night, we do it all.

So let us discover abilities which will possibly make us more confident, flexible, tolerant, and
creative in personal as well as professional life. At FMS culture is what is left after everything we
have learnt has been forgotten. It consists of a deepened understanding, a breadth of outlook, an
unbiased approach and a heart that has deep sympathy and strength of courage.

Learn and most importantly have Fun!!

Message from the Secretary – Sports

Dear Batch 2013,

On behalf of sports society, we congratulate one and all .We also welcome you all for making it to
one of the most sought after B Schools of our country.

FMS is quite known for its extracurricular activities where we understand that academics alone is
not enough for an all round personality of a top executive. A healthy body and winning attitude is
imperative.

Sports society at FMS caters to all sports activities, e. g. Inter, intra batch events and national level
tournaments. We also provide a platform to showcase one’s sporting talent, leadership qualities and
working in team abilities. The fun filled activities around the year will act as stress busters from the
academic rigour; one will also be able to interact better with one’s batch mates and seniors.

The first of its kind among the top ten B-schools, we proudly organized a T-10 cricket tournament,
called the ALTIUS Cup 2011, which was played under flood lights. It was a thrilling experience for all
of us and mesmerized both players and spectators alike. T-10 cricket tournament will be a legacy
event and we will try to add many more events to our portfolio this time. Sports society aims to
develop a lifelong healthy habit of staying fit in budding managers as well as strengthen the image
of FMS as a place to groom managers in every aspect.

Sports is all about discipline, sticking to timelines, training well, never giving up and preparing for
assignments. All of this needs to be applied in your corporate career as well.

Sports Society is looking forward to your enthusiastic participation and support. We welcome you
once again and wish you good luck for an exciting time ahead!

2:00 PM - Lunch Break. Half an hour to grab something from Anna’s along with 235 others!!

4:00 PM - Free from classes with usually lots of work for the next day.

4:00 PM onwards- Society Activities, Events, Guest Lectures

Generally you would have your hands full with society activities - guest lectures, gyaan sessions,
workshops and other fun events like quizzes & competitions that would keep you occupied till 9 pm.

Following a quick dinner would be the last activity or event of the day: the most fun with lots of
music, masti, acting, etc etc..

Go back to your den and prepare for the next day. On a normal day, you would hit the bed when the
birds are about to leave their nest. But in spite of a packed schedule, you would always find time to
interact with your batch mates, seniors, teachers and Anna of course!

If MBA is all about time management and about finding a method in the madness, then Induction will
surely give you all a hands-on experience of this: every night you would feel wiser and all the more
convinced of your managerial skills.

Once the Induction fortnight is over, we would start with what is known as ‘Summer Preparation’ to
kick-start your corporate career with your dream company. Life for the first few months is going to be
hectic. Be prepared to fight it out, to earn the brand FMS and feel a part of this place, which would be
a part of your identity for the rest of your lives!

Welcome juniors to a world where every second presents a new opportunity for you to grab and
excel. Every moment filled with surprises to teach you about yourself as well as other things. We
sincerely hope you will carry on the legacy of this institute and make it reach greater heights! As the
batch of 2012, we wish you all the luck for a very enjoyable experience. You would find us at each
step to guide and support you.

After all, we at FMS are addicted to excellence!!

Getting About in Delhi

This is a must read for all Non-Delhites. Public Transport in Delhi can be a hard lesson if you are
unprepared and therefore we bring to you a quick guide to make your life easier (not to mention that
to make you reach college on time!)

Pretty much all modes of transport are available: DTC buses, auto rickshaws, taxis, cycle rickshaws,
and of course the Delhi Metro. However, it is often recommended that students arrange for some
personal vehicle of their own. Motorcycles and scooters are the most popular mode utilized, while
some students even have their own cars.

For movement within Delhi, students living outside the university campus can make use of the
University special buses, which service the campus colleges in the mornings and afternoons. This
brings with itself the additional opportunity of interacting with students of other colleges. However
do not count on these U-Specials too much because your own schedule would be quite erratic with
classes, lectures and group assignments, at times, stretching late into the night. The general trend has
been to rely on the Metro for travel and convenience. Transport during late night sessions is
generally not a problem as the students either arrange for a car pool or decide to halt for the night at
hostels and nearby flats.

Places of Residence
As FMS is not a fully residential campus, one does get the liberty of deciding one’s own living
arrangement as per one’s convenience. However, it is better to take up accommodation in or around
the university campus as close as possible to the Faculty. This saves valuable time and is particularly
important when you have to work on group assignments.

For the out-station gentlemen, there are many hostels (number of seats, indicated in brackets, is
subject to change). You can contact the hostels on the contact numbers mentioned alongside:

1. VKRV Rao Hostel (32 seats – for FMS’ first years) (Contact No. 01127667198)

mail it by post. The form should be duly completed and submitted by June 30th.

Applications for the hostel would be processed only after you join the Faculty, so the final allocation
of hostel seats will happen within a fortnight of your joining the Faculty. Till then, all applicants will
be provided with accommodation in the hostel on a twin-sharing basis. Applications for the rest of
the hostels are available only after September.

begins in the first week of July while seats are finalized only in the first week of August (the forms of
Meghdoot hostel would be out by June 20th). In the International Students House for Women,
preference is given to international students, so others are given seats only by October. In all the

living at those places), answering your queries regarding the same.

Essentials at FMS

Management is all about unpredictability, thinking on your feet and being prepared for every
situation. The very basic things that you took for granted for so long like regular working/studying
hours, good sleep and loads of time to while away is a scarce, nay tradable, commodity here.

Still, every manager worth his salt knows that it helps to get some basics right straight away. So read
on for some of the essentials at FMS!

Clothes:

Strict Formals: For women, 2-3 formal saris and a business suit should do. For men, more than a pair
of formal clothing (formal business suit, formal shoes, formal shirts, ties etc) is required for events
like seminars, convention and summer placements.

Only ‘formals’: Formal salwar kurtas as well as western formal wear (pant/skirt + Shirt) for women,
and trousers with full sleeves, solid shirts along with formal shoes for men.

Please note that you would be required to wear only formals (and occasionally strict formals)
throughout your first two weeks at FMS i.e. Orientation Week. Afterwards, you would be required to
wear formals or strict formals as and when the need arises.

For everyday wear: Jeans, shirts, T-shirts, etc. are perfectly ok. However be prepared for the extreme
variations of the Delhi weather.

Last but not least, arm yourself for the umpteen parties we would be having throughout the year!!

Computer:

It is advisable to get a laptop to access the Wi-Fi connection in the campus. Laptops are easy to
maintain and carry around in the campus. The Systems society is arranging a deal with a leading
computer manufacturer for a bulk purchase of laptops and we would suggest that those who do not
own laptops should avail of this deal . However, you are also free to bring your own laptop to the
college. You may get in touch with any of your seniors regarding the configuration of the laptop.
Details of the same are also provided in the Google groups and OIL.

You can also avail of the well-equipped Computer Center, which is open from 9 am to 9 pm.

Books:

All the regular core books are available in the library, though in limited numbers. Some of the books
are also available in the VKRV Rao hostel library. You might get some books from your mentor also.
Required course books can be bought from shops around the campus which give decent discounts
(10-20%). For avid readers, our library has a decent collection, but we want you to start your
management lessons from now itself and so we recommend that you start your reading activity right
away.

Important : A Final Word

1. Cheques /drafts (A/C Payee) are to be brought along on your first day at FMS:

 Rs. 25000 favoring Management Science Association.

 Rs. 2750 favoring FMS Alumni Association

The last date for the cheque (A/C payee) or a draft is 15th July. The cheque for FMS Alumni
Association HAS to be a LOCAL cheque; Outstation cheques will NOT be accepted. The cheque
favouring Management Science Association may be an out-station cheque.

2. The first two months will be very rigorous, all focus being on the Summer Placements in October.
To ensure that you all get your dream jobs, we seniors would be there to help and guide you.

 Mentors will be allotted to you soon and you should try and interact with them as much as
possible. Buzz them with queries, doubts, etc. and they would help you as much as possible.
 You are recommended to read the books mentioned on OIL for your general reading on
management and for the Book presentations that happen during the induction week.
 Build your basic fundamentals in MBA by going through all the material that is posted on OIL:
Online Induction & Learning, at this url: www.fms.edu/oil . In case you haven’t registered by
now, do so at the earliest as there are quite a few quizzes, articles and prizes being offered
per week by each society. We also suggest that you take a back-up of all the presentations,
quizzes and gyaan material provided at OIL by the various societies as they shall be needed for
your ready reference later on.

3. The first few months of effort you put in towards learning at FMS shall stand you in good stead all
your life. Make utmost use of this time and enhance your learning. The rigor of learning and toil here
is unmatched and we excel at striking a good balance between work and play. Academics is to be
taken very seriously, and also the gyaan sessions and guest lecturers conducted by various societies.
As regards attendance, a minimum of 75% is a must in all the semesters failing which you shall not be
allowed to appear for your semester end examinations. The first few months shall test the real
manager in you. We hope you live up to the challenge. Thereafter, things just fall in place or rather
are made to fall in place.

4. The must learn computer skills are MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Excel in that order. Efficient
working at FMS would require these skills. We suggest you familiarize yourself with the efficient
operation of these tools before you commence your MBA journey. Any good book from Microsoft
Press or online learning would help you to build up on your skills in these tools.

5. The dress code for orientation week is ‘formals’ and strict formals occasionally. Formals indicate
full-sleeved shirts of solid colors for men and suits/salwar for women. Strict formals refer to business
suits for men and saris/business attire for women.

Please avoid any fancy dress materials for the orientation week. It is advisable for the students to
carry at least 5-6 pairs of formal wear and a minimum of one business suit.

6. It is advised to the day scholar students that they consider taking accommodation near the campus
itself to facilitate their attendance and participation in the institutional activities.
Management Science Association -24- 2011-12
MBA students are usually hard pressed for time; it is recommended that students spend as much
time as possible in the campus to gain the maximum benefit from their admission to FMS.

Finally, there shall be a lot of pressure and burden on you during the first few months. We suggest
you take utmost care of your health and get geared up mentally and physically to face the action that
awaits you. As we mentioned earlier, it’s gonna be one helluva ride!!

Two years at FMS, we promise, will be an unforgettable experience: exhilarating, draining, fun, and
painful. You will encounter the most fascinating and diverse kind of people here. You will experience
the most bizarre of situations, rub shoulders with the who’s who of the industry (both present and
future), compete with some of the best brains in the country and discover your own unique skill sets.

We gel together, party together, study and play together and to quote one of our seniors, even spam
together.
