Just imagine how dull the world would it be if all humankind possess the

same culture. It was like a white canvas without any color and design on it. But, the

world brings astonishment as we are born in a society where beautiful and

multifaceted culture exist. The world is a vast horizon where people with various

cultures meet and clashed. Every turn on the road, you meet people with different

religion, culture, language, ethnicity and tradition.

Throughout the history of humankind, the deep rooted stereotype,

prejudices and bias on cultural differences exist. Even in today’s generation, we are

still struggling on how to fully accept and integrate the world because despite how

much factors that people might have in common, cultural differences are far more

evident than cultural universality. This paves way to a segregated society where

groups of people across the world remain divided. Cultures exhibit vastly different

attitudes and undoubtedly, we often resort to comparisons and tend to compare our

own culture to others and firmly believe that our own culture is better compared to

others and often judge others because of their bizzare cultural practices. Hence, the

concept of superiority and inferiority makes it challenging to erase the boundaries

that separate humanity. But through civilization and globalization, we are already

starting to recognize and embrace multiculturalism. The 21st century has brought

new hope and has empowered the idea of unity in diversity. Diverse cultures have

found their way out of discrimination and the world have started various movements

to encourage, sensitize and educate everyone on the acceptance of cultural

diversity. Respect for the differences among cultures is thundering and soaring

beyond expectations and making significant change to several nations across

borders. In today’s world, the cultural discrimination has changed tremendously and

people have started to recognize the beauty in diversity and appreciate the essence

of cultural diversity. As phenomenal changes have taken place, we started to create

a world where there is no place for discrimination and foster an environment which

respect for diversity. Each of us plays a pivotal role as we are all catalyst for change.

And since we are all product of culture, we should adopt a tolerant attitude towards

other individuals or social groups that hold different moral beliefs. We must

acknowledge that we have multitude of culture around the world as each culture

possesses different sets of beliefs, attitudes, norms, laws that more often than not

contradict other cultures. This is intensified by the idea of Benedict (1974) which

states that morality differs in every society. What is thought right within one group

may be utterly abhorrent to the members of another group, and vice versa.

Absolutely, it is not our difference that divide us. It is our inability to recognize,

accept and celebrate those differences (Lorde, 20xx) Thus, our generation have

challenged us to respect, recognize and reconcile our differences. It’s our

responsibility to bring peace, love and harmony across the multifaceted culture of all

different places. In order to be a culturally diverse society, we need to create a

pathway that leads people with various culture to live in the same world and have a

place for all identities without anyone feels being superior and inferior. Truly, we

need to genuinely aim towards the unification of humankind because by eliminating

the wall that separate humanity, we could achieve a more diverse world since

making people feel respected and accepted is vital to ensure a thriving humanity and

progress of all the nation.

Indeed, we can never wipe off our differences, but we can attain a

harmonious society by embracing our mixed backgrounds, mutual understanding

and respect and cultivate intercultural dialogue. We may have our own respective

religions, languages, cultural practices and traditions, but we all belong to one

human race. As Robert Alan once said, cultural differences should not separate us

from each other, but rather cultural diversity must bring a collective strength that

can benefit the humanity. Definitely, the beauty of the world lies in the diversity of

its people.
