You could speak about any book at all. You could even talk about a boring book and
still get band 9. As long as you stick to the main topic (books) and explain why you are
making that choice – it’s all fine.

Well done with your results Your speaking score will change if the senior examiner
thinks your speaking score is too long. The whole test will be listened to and analysed
again. There is no way to predict the outcome.

The test was carried out in a very friendly atmosphere. The examiner was very kind,
engaging in the conversation, saying things like, “I see…You mean…”
However, I felt like it was a 15-minutes intense stress…too linle time…too many
questions…no time to really think and compose your ideas (like thinking about clauses,
complex sentences, idioms…)You just have to maintain a natural and fluent flow of
speech.
Keeping my fingers crossed for now and waiting for the 2nd part of the ielts for next
Saturday.

Thanks for sharing When it comes to grammar features, there is no thinking time in
the speaking test except for part 2. This means your training before the test is all about
practising including these features in your answers – with the hope that it will happen
naturally in the test. During the test, the aim is maintaining fluency and listening to the
examiner’s questions. Sounds like it went well though – good luck on Saturday

It is up to you if you go for a remark. I have not heard your speaking test, so I
cannot comment on your fluency, vocabulary, grammatical range & accuracy or
your pronunciation. A senior examiner will do the remark and will give you a
higher score if your English on the recording is a higher band score. You must

decide if you want to go for a remark. They do not lower your score, but I always
recommend that you confirm this with your test centre before applying for
remark. Let me know what you decide and what happens. If you take the test
again, think carefully about how you showcase your English when you expand
answers.

For the speaking test, it is fine to have a mixed accent. Your pronunciation is basically
marked on how easily understood you are, not which specific accent you have.
Although my accent is English, I sometimes use American words or intonation – it’s
fine in IELTS speaking. But not for IELTS writing – choose one language and stick to it.

I was asked a question on the type of outdoor sport i would love to partake in the future
and why.
I simply used cycling but i remember stating had used a bicycle before when i was much
young but never tried it on the bridge as a form of exercise.
Do you think it was wrong stating cycling as an outdoor sport i would love to try in
future since i once use a bicycle when i was much younger.
Secondly, the interviewer repeated a question after i explained my part and he concluded
by saying i didn’t ask about the government regulations. Then i explained again and he
went on to the next question with a node.
Am worried.

Cycling is an outdoor sport. You are not marked on your ideas or task response in
IELTS speaking anyway. It is fine that there is interaction as the examiner guides you in
the right direction. As your score is based only on fluency, grammar, vocab and pron of
your spoken language, it has no impact at all.

Hi Liz!
Thanks for your hard work here and all the materials! I had my exam on April 13th. My
speaking test topic was about a time I loaned a valuable thing from a family member.
I just received my provisional score online. I scored 9.0 in both listening and reading, 8.5
in speaking but only 6.5 in writing. I’m so disappointed and have no idea what went
wrong! I’ve always wrinen well and e.g. gained very good marks in essays in high school
English. I know I spent too much time on the first task and thus hurried in the second,
and my handwriting did get worse while writing in a hurry… But I still finished just in
time and was preny happy with my work. I believe I paragraphed the text well and my
opinion was clear all the way, but obviously I don’t know for certain if my arguments
were good enough. Now I’m wondering if I made spelling errors while hurrying, if my
hand writing was I llegible or could I have been under 250 words by mistake… I really
don’t understand.

Essay writing at school or university has no relation to essays wrinen for IELTS. There
are specific requirements for the higher band scores – if you do not know what they
are, you will struggle. Or if you think you understand them but have never actually
had them interpreted for you, then you will struggle. Your writing test will already
have been marked by two separate examiners who agree your score is 6.5. But it
doesn’t mean that a senior examiner will agree. When you ask for a remark, it is a
senior examiner who assesses your speaking and writing. So remarking is your choice.
Writing just under 250 words has no impact because they don’t start deducting points
until under 240. However, it would show you have not sufficiently developed ideas
which is an essential feature for a higher band score in TR. If handwriting is illegible,
then of course it is a problem. But examiners are used to all kinds of handwriting.
If you go for remark it might be a long shot, but I wish you luck. If you take the test
again, please get my Advanced lessons and learn the right techniques:

After speaking to an acquaintance about the test (he was there too), I understood one
major problem with my task 2. A very stupid mistake. I had wrinen the essay
without noticing at all, that they had asked for examples from my own life to a
positive/negative essay. I just wrote in general. I’m so disappointed in myself, I
thought I had read the question carefully, but apparently hadn’t looked down
outside the box, where they had additional spesific points on top of the actual
question.
How much does this affect the task response band? If I otherwise stay in my view
the whole time (regards to the view the topic being and develop the ideas quite
well)? Does it stay automatically at e.g. band level 5 no maner how the task is
performed otherwise? Thank you again for all your help!

The instructions usually say “give any relevant examples from your own
knowledge or experience”. This does not mean you need to write about yourself.
It is about you writing about the world, about people in general, about your
understanding of things. So, don’t worry if you didn’t use specific examples from
your life – it isn’t necessary. Your essay would have included your knowledge of
the world.

Hi Liz,
I just took IELTS this morning. I was so nervous. Your learning material was incredibly
helpful. I have a question, though. I felt like the Examiner gave me four parts. Is that
possible? Or it was just me at the edge of dementia? Below is the list from my test. The
wording is not verbatim though. Sorry for that.
First Part: Introduction about myself (where I came from etc) and about my work
Second Part: The Sky.
1. Do you like looking at the sky?
2. Which one do you prefer? Looking at the sky at night or day?
3. Where do you think is the best place to look at the sky?
Third Part: A job of one of my grandparents
1. What was the job?
2. Did he or she ever work somewhere else?
3. Would you consider the same job for yourself?
Fourth Part: Employee personal development
1. Do you think it is important to develop employees so they can reach their full
potential?
2. Do you think developing employees is only about filling skill gaps?
3. How much time should a company give for personal development?
4. What kind of challenges that a company should give, so the employees can develop?

Hi,
I happened to come across this forum and it is truly amazing. Thank you for this platform
to discuss everyone’s experience.
I have taken my IELTS speaking test today the 11th of April, 2019.
Part 1: General Questions on Travelling and Education.
Part 2: Any elderly person i met, where, how and what is my opinion on them.
Part 3: More about younger generation Vs the old.
It seemed strange that the invigilator was interrupting before i could complete a sentence
and was taking things personally. Infact, on one occasion she responded that the
knowledge gained by youngsters from the old people in terms of leading life and the
advise provided when required were useless. It was more like a debate than questioning.

Liz says
April 11, 2019 at 1:54 pm
IT is 100% normal that the examiner will interrupt your answers. The examiner chooses
when to move on to the next question. There is no such thing ask task completion in
IELTS speaking so the examiner does not need to hear a full answer. Part 3 is called a
Discussion because the examiner will usually interact as though it was a discussion.
This means he or she will challenge your answers to see how you cope in English – it is
an English test. I hope you do well – sounds like the examiner thought you had
potential. However, if you don’t get the results you need – you now know why – you
didn’t understand the test enough.

Hesitations are part of the marking criterion of fluency. The score for fluency is not
based on one aspect of the test – it is an overall performance that is marked. If time is
up, it is up – this isn’t’ a mistake. There is no such thing as Task Completion is IELTS
Speaking.

The topics are not predictions. As explained on the page above, they are reported
topics. This means when someone takes the test, they tell me what topics they had. In

Good afternoon, Madam.
I have a question about one of the topics reported by students. It’s sometimes given as
“An effigy in your city” but in your list of current topics it’s wrinen like “A statue in your
city”. Am I supposed to talk about an ordinary statue or about an effigy that’s created for
the purpose of burning it further? If the laner is the case, then I have nothing to say since
we don’t practice such things in our culture. I’m a linle confused Thanks in advance.

The numbers wrinen by the examiner have nothing to do with your score at all. You
should know that your score is not even considered until the end of the test. They
relate to timing and you should pay no anention at all to them.
Part 1 has on average about 12 questions and part 3 on average about 6 – but this can
vary and it also has nothing to do with your score.
It is 100% normal for the examiner to interrupt your answers and move on to a new
question. Task achievement has no place in IELTS speaking. If you produce the target
language, the examiner will quickly move on. You should have been prepared for this
before you entered the test room.
If you prepare properly, there will be no surprised for you at all.

Hello Liz,
Today i went for Speaking test, it started really well, I noticed as I was answering, the
examiner was kind of moving on to next questions, I wasn’t speaking too much, i mean i
was answering in 2/3 sentences but i had more to answer and he was moving on to next
ones. So I don’t know if it was normal or not.
Now coming to my main query, In part-2 i had cue card regarding “tell me about an
Intellingent person you know” & i blanked out, but still i had to speak so i started
speaking about my father, and mentioned his qualities like friendliness, multitasker,
having sound knowledge of things going around in country and kept on going why I
thought he was intelligent. I knew it wasn’t 100% on topic but i continued for a minute.
Then he asked a supplementary question in part 2 from cur card (may be because he
knew I didn’t speak for that long).
So finally my question is, will me being off topic affect my speaking score? What you do
think of the points i covered in part 2 as compared to what was asked on cue card?

It sounds to me like you didn’t prepare properly for the speaking test. You should
know that it is 100% normal for the examiner to interrupt answers and move on
quickly to a new question. You should also know that being on or off topic is NOT
marked in IELTS speaking. You should know that it is 100% ok to adapt the topic on
the cue card and speak loosely around the main topic. Your choice to topic was 100%
fine. This means without being properly prepared – everything was completely fine.
So, relax and think of tomorrow – good luck!

You can do what you want, but it is a waste of time doing it. When you have time to
review answers, use the time to read a few questions ahead, highlight keywords and
prepare paraphrases. Don’t jump sections, just read a bit ahead. Have you done full
practice tests at home? You should always do about four FULL REAL IELTS tests at
home before you do your actual test in the exam room. The real practice tests are 100%
the same as in the exam. They are published by IELTS for candidates at use at home.

Just a question, in the part 3 of the speaking test, is the interviewer allowed to ask specific
questions about politics like: What do you think about these 3 persons running for senate
in the Philippines? Are you going to vote for them? Why? Are you familiar with the
scandals they’re involved in?.
To add to this, the interviewer is constantly interrupting me. He cannot wait for me to
finish my answers but I always tried to end my statements as complete sentences. It was
very challenging to remember his questions because he is throwing them like there is no
tomorrow while, I was talking.. Is this okay? Thank you and more power!

IELTS is a non-political test. The examiner should NEVER ask you about your views on
politics in that way. It is highly inappropriate. The only types of questions the examiner
can ask about the government is, for example, “Do you think the government does
enough to protect the environment?” All questions are topic based and politics is not
an IELTS topic. You can complain about this. Because the test is recorded, something
will have to be done about it. You can also complain to IELTS Official to take it further.
About being interrupted, it is 100% normal for this to happen. You should be ready for
this before entering the test room. Whenever you need thinking time, you can say
“Could you repeat the question, please?” If the examiner is speaking too fast, you
could say “Could you speak a bit slow please, I’m not feeling well today”. That is
completely fine.

Thanks for sharing I do need to contradict one of your suggestions. It is not
recommended to use a proverb in any part of the IELTS test. IELTS is a language test
which tests your own personal English. Each sentence should be created by you and
not come from memory. If you want to say something, use your own words to express
it. The more you express things in your own way, the bener.

No you can’t ask to change the topic. If you don’t like sport, you can talk about why
you don’t like and why other people do like it. You can talk about how sports have
changed and how people’s views to them have changed. You can talk about your past
experiences with sport when you were a child. You can talk about how you would

You are marked on the language you produce. Your ideas are not marked and
task achievement is not marked. If you want a higher score, you need to deliver a
bener level of English with a broader range. You need to show the ability to speak
in different tenses. Offer a comparison – offer a second conditional statement.
Example in detail because descriptions offer more language. etc etc

2. In Reading and Listening , which of the particular sections should we anempt first in
order to maximize our scores in respective sections ?
I have been searching for an answer on the above queries for a while now and gening

You are NOT allowed to give your opinions or try to guess the reasons for information.
Task 1 is not an essay, it is a factual report based on what you see. If you can’t see it,
you can’t write it.

Today was my speaking exam. My cue card topic was health related. in part one national
holidays , receiving emails this kind of questions the examiner asked me… He was asking
me questions one after another constantly… it was really stressful experience though I
tried to smile all the time.
Thank you.

It is 100% normal that the examiner will ask one question after another without a break
or pause. Did you expect something different? This is standard procedure in IELTS
