Giraffes
A giraffe gives birth standing up. This means
that their baby falls about two metres to the
ground without being hurt. A baby giraffe is on
average about 1.8 metres tall when it is born.
The baby can stand up and walk within the first
two hours of its life.
Blinking
We blink about 15 times each minute, probably
without realising. It is controlled by the brain
and happens automatically. When we blink,
water spreads across our eyes to keep them
clean and stop them from drying out.
* blink – to close your eyes for a very short time
then open them again.
The hippopotamus
The name hippopotamus means ‘river horse’.
The hippo can run as fast as a man and is a
graceful swimmer. It can hold its breath under
water for up to five minutes.
* hold your breath – not to breathe.

Calendars
The Mayan civilisation was the first to use
calendars 1,500 years ago. They calculated a
365-day year using their knowledge of the Sun
and the sky. However, they had 18 months
with 20 days with five extra days added on
at the end. These days were considered
unlucky days.
Everlasting food
Archaeologists in Egypt tasted honey found in
the tombs of the ancient Pharaohs. Incredibly,
it was edible. It is thought that honey is the only
food that doesn’t go off.
* to go off – when food is no longer fresh.
Chocolate
Chocolate was discovered by the Aztec
people in Mexico. They consumed it as a
drink, but it became so valuable that they
also used it as money. However, chocolate is
dangerous for dogs. It attacks their hearts and
nervous system.
