Band Camp: All Season

As we all know people love reality television. Many different reality television shows

have quickly gained in popularity. Specifically shows that involved some form of performing or

competing team. There have been multiple Dance and cheer shows, like Dance Moms and Cheer

that have gained large loyal followings. People want the drama of these teams, while also

watching the skill that these people have. While these shows are interesting people are starting to

get bored of the same shows, but different teams are all over television. They want to watch

something new. Something that nearly everyone has heard of yet doesn’t know a lot about.

If you go to a college football game, during pregame and halftime they have a marching

band perform. People typically only see the performance of the Marching Band and not the

behind-the-scenes. They don’t see the drama of hot practices while they scramble to learn four

different shows. This show will mainly focus on the guard, considering the guard can talk while

they perform and the guard is the visual part of the performance, they are the ones tossing the 6-

foot pole flags into the air and at any moment someone could drop or hurt themselves. This will

keep people drawn in. This is where Band Camp All Season (Band Camp) comes in.

I intend to get the show Band Camp pitched to those at Netflix. To pitch a show or idea to

Netflix, you need to have “a licensed agent, producer, attorney, manager, or industry executive

who already has a relationship with Netflix” (Netflix help). Therefore, I’m reaching out to those at

the United Talent Agency for assistance with getting my pitch to Netflix. I’m asking for your

assistance in getting this idea pitched to Netflix and hopefully streamed on Netflix.

The show would display what it is like to be in a college marching band and will show

what they go through. Of course, there is going to be drama and arguments because that’s what

reality tv is and that is just what happens when you’re around the same people all of the time in

the heat. This show would be sure to highlight the hard work that happens behind the sense as

well. To keep the marching band audience, we would keep a good balance between the drama

and band. This series focuses on the guard, however, we would also have to make sure to show

enough of the band and include band people drama to keep the large band audience that the show

targets.

It is no surprise that Netflix has a large loyal following. Netflix’s largest demographic is

people ages 18-54 (Dixon). This is the age of currently people in college or those who have

already graduated. Not everyone who watches Netflix goes to college, but this show is marketed

more to those who have considering that they are more likely to watch the show. College

students are going to watch this show to see other people their age living, while the older people

are going to watch this show to remember what it was like for them to march. We will have a

large and loyal audience to market towards.

People all around the world have done marching band or color guard. Some marching

bands even have up to 500 people in them. Some people did marching band in the past who have

come from large bands. This helps prove my point that there is already a large audience of

potential viewers. People who have done marching band are always ready to jump on a form of

media that has a band in it. Take the successful 2002 film Drumline, whose domestic box office
Rivera,3

sales were 56 million dollars (Mojo). This was in 2002, so a marching band show will bring in

that large audience on top of the newer generation. This helps proves the point that the marching

band community is willing to watch media that has them represented in it. Now you’re probably

wondering about which other groups of people the show will market towards.

Besides marketing towards a specific age and hobby, we won’t have a specific age

demographic. We would try to get a diverse band to cover to make sure we have different types

of people represented in the show. The show will be LGBT-friendly because that’s how most

marching bands are. Marching band is a very diverse and large community so people from all

backgrounds and demographics will be interested in watching the show. Now, why would you

want to pick up a show about a bunch of band college kids?

It would be beneficial to pick up this show because reality television is easy to consume a

piece of media that people can’t get enough of. They don’t need huge budgets like other projects

and people quickly become addicted to them. By using a college marching band, you get a

university full of potential consumers who can afford to pay for a subscription, or who already

have a subscription. So, Netflix will get more subscriptions because those who don’t have

Netflix will get cerous about seeing a marching band in the media. In addition to the college

students, you have the parents, family, and friends of the students in the show. They are going to

watch their person on screen and will potentially buy a Netflix subscription. Either way, Netflix

will see an increase in subscriptions.

Netflix’s show Cheer premiered in 2020 and quickly became extremely popular. IT

climbed the charts and was more popular than shows like Cobra Kai. (Heggeness). The audience

that watched this show was more than just those in cheer. This show attracted those who had no

experience in cheer. This is another example of a show base on a performance team that has a
Rivera,4

large audience. Because of this show’s popularity, CW decided to come up with a similar show

called March. Netflix picking up my show pitch will be a good way for them to crush the

competition.

A great way to implement this show, as you would do with any show is a pilot. This

would be filmed at the begging of the season during band camp. It would introduce each

character in the guard, along with the section leaders of the band, the director, and other staff

members. It would talk about the show they are doing during the season. This episode would

cover the band camp drama of what happens every year. The new freshmen are completely

clueless and stressed over the amount of new stuff thrown on them on the first day. The episode

would have to end on a cliffhanger to draw the audience in for the second episode.

I hope that after listening to my pitch you take some heavy consideration in picking up

this show. It won’t cost you much and will have a loyal audience prepared to watch each

episode. Band Camp would be a nice thing to have your name on, there will always be

something to film. It would be nice to get this idea to Netflix in partnership with you.
