Imprudentia Mors

Section 1: Executive Summary

• Synopsis
My show is based on two older teenagers who have been to school together since they
were little, they both liked each other growing up but neither characters took the other
seriously. However, when they reach there last year of college, they both take more interest
in the other and our main male character (Jamal) asks our main female character (Tamaya)
on a date. During this, Jamal’s family start to run low on money and tings take a turn for him
and his mum. To try and help them Jamal starts to help a gang by doing small favours for
money. Jamal grows to love the money and becomes greedy for it. This greed then concerns
his mum as she realizes the seriousness and the danger, she has allowed her son to get into.
His commitments to the gang then mean that he gets more respect and liked in the block
boy’s gang. A frequent location in my series is the ‘breathe’ café where characters meet
here on a regular basis. Throughout my series the gang becomes more serious and more
dangerous meaning the consequences are worse. However, in the end all the problems are
resolved and Jamal can return to his normal life.

• Aims
The aims of channel 4 Is to create change in the wider world through all of our activities:
from TV, to streaming, social media and film at Channel 4. Channel 4 was created to be a
disruptive, innovative force in UK broadcasting. Their purpose is also to create change
through entertainment and we have a unique public service remit to represent unheard
voices, challenge with purpose and reinvent entertainment. One of channel 4’s biggest aims
is to channel unheard voices so in my show I will make an aim to channel the voices of some
characters that may be shy or feel like they cant speak out along side my original storyline.
The aims of my show is to raise awareness about the dangers of gun violence and gang
violence. I would also like to highlight the deaths and injuries that are also involved in the
gang violence to help prevent this in the future. To do this I would have to highlight the bad
things what happens to family’s and others involved in the gangs whilst also being
entertaining and educational to watch. By educating people who watch they will then know
what to look out for and dangerous situations that they should be aware of when it comes
to later life. People will also be in formed on the mental illness side of the gang life and what
affects it can have on everyone involved. This would be beneficial for the younger
generation who may think being in a gang is a trend or a positive thing which it isn’t.
however may also be educational for the older viewers who don’t know the real effects of
the gang life and the harm it can cause.
Section 2: Statement Of Needs
• Unique Selling Point
I think that a unique selling point of my show would be that my cast shows diversity which
means that my cast is very inclusive and includes people from different ethnicities and
religions. This would be a unique selling point as it means that people from different
backgrounds can all relate to my show which means it will be relatable for different people
and make my show more popular and sell to a wider audience. This is an advantage to my
show because other channels on E4 do not have a very diverse cast making mine unique and
more appealing to a wider audience.

• Target Audience
The client brief states that my show is to be aimed at 15 – 21 year olds which is why I have
specifically aimed my target audience is teenagers and young adults, this because my show
will focus on some topics that are not suitable for younger viewers. I want my audience to
be able to relate to the show and the characters which would make it more enjoyable for
them to watch. I would also like some of my audience to be from similar areas to where my
tv how is based so they can take more interest and be able to feel like they are part of my
show which might make them take more interest and pull a bigger audience in. I feel like If
my series is relatable and realistic then it will make people enjoy it more. I also feel that my
audience will be more interactive e and in touch with social media meaning if they see an
advert or a social media post about my tv show they are more likely to watch it than if a
younger child seen the advert.

• Medium Chosen
My show will be aired on a Thursday evening at 9pm because this when my audience
are most likely to be able to watch my show. This means that younger children which my
show isn’t suited for will be asleep by this time and the teenage and adults will be able to
watch without distractions for children too. I have picked a Thursday because I feel like that
the is the start of the weekend for some people and is also towards the end of the week to
allow my audience to be chilled and relaxed while watching. However if my audience still
have work, school etc the next day it is still a suitable time for my audience as my episodes
are not too long. Some laws and ethics that may affect my show is OFCOM this could be that
my show isn’t suitable to younger audiences and contain scenes that could offend certain
people. This could therefore get m show reported and raised to OFCOM. For example with
the reality Tv show OFCOM says has been one of the most complained tv show with people
saying it has had ‘alleged misogynistic bullying’ and in total has had 2630 complaints so far.
This is why I would have to sure that my show is suitable and has warnings before showings
that younger viewers should not be watching my show due to the bad violence and bad
language.

Section 3: Product Description

• Programme information
Each of my episodes will be an hour long and will include a short recap of the
previous episode and a taster of the next episode. Each episode will address a new
problem and build up to the big ending of my series. There will be a total of six
episodes in my short series because I think that If there was too many episodes it
would become boring for the audience. The show will be introduced with a small clip
of the previous episode so the audience would be refreshed and reminded of the
previous episode. My logo would then open the show and the next episode would
start with the title of the police sirens and gun shorts in the background. My title
would also be presented with red and blue lights to show the police lights of a police
car. This I because the lights and sirens will also grab the audience’s attention as they
are loud sharp noises.

• Marketing and distribution

I will market my tv show by using social media and tv adverts between other episodes
on channel 4, other adverts would include radio as then not only people who watch the
tv but also people who are listening to the radio will be informed on my show. Some
social media I would use would be Facebook and Instagram as I feel that that I where
most people spend their spare time and are some of the more popular apps compare to
snapchat etc. To further advertise my show, I could use billboards posters, leaflets and
print to allow my series to be advertised on a wider scale. Channel 4’s target audience
usually ranges from 16 – 34 year olds with a 30 second advert normally costing around
£1000-£2000. By distributing my show this means that I will talk about my show on blogs
and try to also get other people to watch my show and write a good review which would
inform other people about my show and getting a wider audience talking about my
show. I can also use the actors in my show to promote the series by posting and telling
friends about it which would inform more people again and then they can further post
and share the word on my new series.

Section 4: Budget
The budget I have been given for my show has been around 10k each episode. With
this budget I must pay for sets, actors staff, equipment etc. This is a tight budget for an
episode as some series such as stranger things have been given amounts like 30 million USD
per episode for their series. To keep costs down I will have to find cheaper alternatives
wherever possible and strategically use the money to make the most out of the small
budget I have been given.
Things to consider
Equipment- One way to keep costs down in my show would be to shoot scenes in
the day so I would not have to spend money on lighting and waste money on filming in the
night when it would help me save money if I filmed in the day. Another further way to keep
costs down when making my show I will need to borrow equipment from channel 4 or rent
equipment. This would be a lot more cheaper than buying my own equipment for my show
as channel 4 will already have the equipment I need making it helpful to me and my series.
Locations- Another thing that would take up my budget would be hiring out
locations to work in, to work around this I would have to try and use minimal locations to
spend less money on hiring out locations. I have also planned for a lot of my scenes to be
shot outside which will mean that I will not have to pay for the location but will just need
permission to close roads and certain areas off. This is beneficial as it lowers my costs of sets
by a lot. I can also save money in my budget by reusing sets an altering them to be used as
multiple different locations instead of strictly using it for one purpose. This will be helpful
because I can use one thing for multiple different roles.
Actors- By helping myself save money on the budget I can use actors who have little
experience in the film industry and have came from a college or university. This would be
because A list actors are not an option for my small budget as famous actors such as
Dwayne Johnson are paid almost 20million USD for one film. My actors would have little
experience but will still be able to play the roles effectively. I will also use volunteers as roles
of my actors who would want the experience of being on a work set and would be wanting
to be involved in the behind the scenes.
Special effects- Special effects are not necessary in my series unless it will be when
there is guns or shooting scenes. However, to keep this low I will only use the noise of the
gun and no one will be able to be seen getting shot. This will also be beneficial as It wont
cause as much violence or gore in my show. This will not take up a lot of my budget and will
only use up a small amount because special effects won’t be used often in my show.
Staffing- Staffing and crew members will take up a lot of my budget as they are very
important in helping and assisting me in my short series. To keep the price of my staff down
I could have staff that can do more than one job on set. For example, I could have the
makeup artist also being able to do hair and work with special effects makeup for injuries
etc. this means that I will be paying one person for 3 different roles which would save me a
lot of money through filming my series.

Section 5: Concluding Comments

My show should be considered by the executives at channel 4 because even though my
programme may not be suitable for all audiences and ages it will be appealing for some
people who take interest in the topic. However my show does include some violence, gore
and drug scenes but I feel like it is more of an educational and awareness spreading point of
view over an influential and encouraging point of view. My show also highlights the true and
real side of gang life and also the dangers whilst making it enjoyable to watch and have a
storyline to follow proving how quick someone’s life can be flipped upside down with the
gang life.
