Title: ​Television and Film’s Impact On Teenagers

Description: ​For my senior portfolio, I plan to research deeply into how television and film have

an impact on society especially with teens. I will study how both television and film portray this

”normal” idea of how people are supposed to look and act. Teens are always watching some

sort of television. Television and films have turned society’s norms to be skinny but not too

skinny, pretty but natural-looking. I will also look deep into how television and film portray how a

teen’s life is supposed to look like such as portraying that drugs and partying are okay and

normal. I will be obtaining more information on how television and film impact teens to be with

the world. Television and film impact a lot more than appearance and daily life but also in

relationships. Watching films while growing up gives you this unrealistic view of what teenage

life is supposed to be. Some films set relationship standards too high and give young people

this relationship goal that no one can reach the standards. After all of the research found, I will

then start sketching out video ideas. In the videos, I will focus on both what television portrays

and what reality looks like. I will focus on appearance and expressing emotions by using

different shots and sound effects. I would film each video differently based off of how television

shows are filmed. The main focus would be of course how it is being filmed but also what is

appearing in the video. This can show not only filming skills but also show the importance that

television does actually influence many people and not in a good way. The video will be

informing of consistent techniques and appearance to show that television has set up this ideal

normal. I will develop twelve scripts that will be written in two-column and film-style scripting

techniques and then seven of the scripts will be put into video productions. One of the scripts

will be a PSA to show off the rest of the video plans. The other video plans will be different such

as a basic storyline, a split-screen of TV life, and the reality, one that would be portrayed as a

TV episode and etc. There will be a digital storyboard for the PSA, that will be put in the

PowerPoint to give a brief summary of what the portfolio will consist of.​ ​There will be three

videos and research that I have made and written for the Entertainment Technology senior class

in January to help me get prepared for the final presentation in April. All of my work will be

uploaded to the website that will be created for my portfolio. I plan to share my photography

portfolio with my panel during my presentation. Multiple reflections will be added to the portfolio.

I will produce my portfolio “reel” based on my best work throughout my two years in the major

after I have presented my mastery. I also hope to find an internship that will allow me to learn

new techniques that could impact the overall quality of my projects.

Rationale for Choosing Topic: ​I chose to do the impact that television and film have on young

viewers because they don’t realize they are being influenced. Many of the social norms of

television and film put out is unrealistic. Although television is fun to watch it would be better and

maybe even more entertaining if it focused more on today’s issues. Sometimes the problem is

that that television focuses too much on what they present that they don’t see flaws of certain

situations. Meaning that people don’t just jump out of cars when they’re in an argument. It also

is strange that most television shows present teens as doing drugs and other bad things. When

not all teenagers do that or teenagers that watch it want to get into that stuff. I wanted to focus

on the topic to show how influential tv is and what they are influencing teens to do. This should

help me in the future to know what I want to put out in the world. No one knows how much of an

impact other people have on each other either real people or people made up. Throughout this

process, I will be able to earn how to explain the influence better. Learning this for the future will

help me realize what I want to make and put out in the world that may have an effect on others.

This could help anyone to realize that what they put out on television and film will make an

impact on someone. It should be a good, inspirational message rather than building up the

teenage lives is to party and do drugs. I believe that learning how television really affects teens

will help learn to affect teens in the right ways. I understand that people are going to do what

they want to do but it’s still a good thing to at least lead them on the right path. I know that

learning this will definitely help in the future to be able to reach our audience in a good way but

still be able to entertain.

August: ​I plan to gather and collect information for my research in order to get a head start on
my annotated bibliography. I will also write my PSA script and film.

September: ​I will complete the annotated bibliography and would like to have a significant
amount of my paper completed by the end of this month. The PSA will be done by the
beginning of September. The second script will be written and start to film.

October: ​I plan to have my second video completed including the script. I will finish the first
video reflection. I will also be looking for a place to do some extended shadowing or possibly an
internship to help me with my portfolio. My research project will be finalized and submitted. Will
begin on the third script and video.

November: ​I will submit the third video including scripts. I will also turn in that reflection. I will
submit a link to my portfolio to Mr. Johnson for a progress check/grade. I will also be working
with whoever I intern hopefully.

December: ​I will then have the fourth video and scripts completed. As well as the reflection.

January: ​I will have the fifth video and scripts done. Reflection will also be turned in.
Everything is ready to be presented to the senior class. The practice presentation will be
presented.

February: ​I will have the final video completed as well as the script. Reflection also turned in. I
will continue to fix up my portfolio.

March: ​My portfolio will be completed. Any last-minute things if needed. Everything should be
completed such as the news and photography things.

April: ​I will make sure everything is prepared to be presented for the official presentation.

May: ​Everything is done :)
