1.

Please explain the difference between “Low-End Consumer Cameras”, “Mid-Range

Prosumer Cameras”, and “High-End Professional Cameras”.

Low-End Consumer Cameras are considered more home videos like family events such as
birthday parties. The cameras can shoot video but are usually shorter time. Cameras are a
lot cheaper around $1,000. The quality is much better and can have interchangeable lenses.
Mid-Range Prosumer Cameras is a balance and cost over $1,000 but is a more professional
camera for mainstream productions. High-End Professional cameras are for television and
feature films, Cameras are a lot over $15,000. These cameras are also a lot heavier and
bulky.

2. What are the main reasons directors are choosing to use digital film making equipment as
opposed to actual 35mm film cameras?

Digital technology has been able to make filming easier and gives the ability for anyone to
use a camera on a budget.

3. What is the purpose of compressing digital video? What does the term “lossy
compression” mean in terms of digital storage?

It reduces the video information and uses the original voltage samples. The term means
that the info is constant from frame to frame.

4. What are the suggested items you should always carry with you as a videographer?

It is important to always have a tripod since it helps with stability.

5. Why does the author use The Blair Witch Project a s an example when explaining digital
film making?

To explain that you need to stay on budget and even though the camera that wasn’t use
wasn’t as expensive as other films, it still was able to succeed in the worldwide
distributions.

6. What is the purpose of a lens hood?

The purpose is to block the sun or any stray light to avoid a lens flare.

7. How is a time code used in editing?

A timecode is stamped on the frame of the video to shot the time the video runs.

8. What is a Jib and what is it used for?

A Jib is a device that makes the camera have smooth moves and is controlled from the
other end of the crane-like balance.

9. Explain the technical differences between DV and HDV.

DV has a ratio of 5:1 with a speed of 25Mbps. HDV has a high resolution of 16:9.

10. Explain and define all of the alternatives to using a tripod.

CineSaddle is the least expensive camera tripod. This helps get the camera lower to the
ground. A Steadicam cost a lot but a glide cam is cheaper and still helpful. Jib helps with
movement of the camera to make a smooth.

11. Define and explain image stabilization.

Image stabilization helps from shaky camera movement. It is able to keep it more still then
jumpy. This can be fixed by a different lens and sometimes through editing.

12. How is the difference between a camera and a camcorder explained?

A camcorder is a camera with a recorder attached while a camera is just a camera

13. Define the terms CCD and CMOS and explain the difference between a CCD and a
CMOS in the operation of a camera.

CCD is an image sensor and so is a CMOS. A CCD is just a different technology and
contains full color. A CMOS was original a semiconductor like a mini portable computer.

14. What type of tripod does the author suggest you should use and why?

A simple tripod with a simple fluid head can do the job to keep the shot smooth.

15. What are the differences between the NTSC and PAL formats?
The difference is that the NTSC is used in the United States while most of Europe and Asia
use the PAL format. The frames in NTSC are 60Hz then divided by 2 which is 30 and PAL
has a standard of 50Hz which makes 25 frames.

16. Explain the purpose of a DAC in digital conversion. Why is this important?

It reconverts the digital to analog converter. It turns the electronic signals of the images
and converts to playback.

17. Based on our previous conversations and the information presented in this packet, what
are some of the features of cameras along with video accessories that you feel will benefit
you the most in putting together a quality/semi-professional looking video production?
Explain how.

Things that are important to film would be a high-quality camera. You need to know how
to work in the manual to be able to change the settings. Having a tripod and stabilizer is
important to keep the shots smooth. Having clean shots are able to let the viewer keep
watching rather than get sick watching shaky camera movements. Knowing how to set the
setting will help set the scene and feel the viewer gets while watching. It is still possible to
make a good video without a high-quality camera but it is helpful. It is important to stay on
budget.
