Capstone Project Proposal Draft

Name of student: Earvin A

Date: March 4 2024
Teacher: Ms. Lacroix
Capstone strand I have chosen is Project creation
Proposed title for my project:

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

What can I do to further expand exposure in the ultimate frisbee community?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect
to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?
During my early highschool experience attending semiahmoo secondary in surrey as well as
having friends all across Surrey made it seem like that ultimate frisbee was a popular sport in
BC as there’s surrey club programs such as the vortex program and all surrey schools are
very invested in their ultimate program. So from my personal experience up until grade 11
when i moved to langley i thought all parts of BC was invested into ultimate frisbee just as
much as surrey was. I was proved wrong when i got a sense of how eastern valley schools
ran their ultimate programs as there’s less effort put into these programs. I’m choosing to dive
into this because I believe all parts of BC such as the eastern valley and northern BC
could/should have just as much of a ultimate community as both south and north fraser. Being
from surrey and being lucky enough to have the opportunity to play for the surrey vortex
program, i have been very invested in each and every ultimate community I have been apart
of, and each of them have just been as enjoyable as another. Which is why I’m choosing to try
and raise awareness of the sport for more people to be more encouraged and have the
chance to be apart of an ultimate community of their own.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this

area of inquiry?
I have two years of regulated experience of playing ultimate, with two years of being apart of a
club team during the summer and two years of playing highschool ultimate. Which in one of
those years I go to play on a high level team, that was a top ten team in BC. I’m also familiar
with the content creation aspect of it as i’ve watched guides and videos breaking down certain
aspects of the game. I understand how hard it is to progress skill and common mistakes
beginners make first hand. I believe i can help those who are struggling with tips I’ve learned
from previous coaches and high level peers, but i can also explain it in a way that’s beginner
friendly. With my extra research I believe I can combine what I’ve learned first hand and online
to create my own guides and how-to videos that can help both high level and beginners help
expand their skill further.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?
My desired career area is in health science specifically to become a Physiotherapist or
Registered massage therapist. There’s a lot of vigorous physical activity when it comes to
ultimate as it’s very cardio heavy. When it comes to injuries from ultimate I have first hand
experience as I’ve had back and shoulder pain while playing. When I do garner additional
knowledge of the human body I will be able to connect why I had those injuries. When I am a
PT or RMT and I have reoccuring injuries to my back I’ll have the knowledge of properly
treating my back.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what
will you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced
at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your
proposal.

In regards of the research being done for my capstone, I’m looking for the most important take
aways that come from how-to videos so I can combine my own experience from what I’ve
been taught and what works for me to make an affective video that can be useful to both
beginners and those who are looking to develop their game further.
I can also research videos that I want to imitate the style of for example I want to create some
type of day in the life during a game day or during a club training camp day where I show
everything that I do to prepare myself to play that day (what I eat, how I mentally prepare,
warm-up drills, game footage, recovery).
For now the videos I certainly want to create are guides on how to throw the basic throws
which are the forehand and backhand throws and how to fix common mistakes beginners
make. I also want to add a section in each of those videos where it’s highlighting advanced
techniques and ways to work on that technique to develop that skill.
I also certainly want to make 3-8 short form videos around a minute interviewing a mixture of
coaches and high level experienced players on their experience with the ultimate communities
they have been apart of, what’s made it so memorable, what’s their favourite moment from
their career, who’s one peer or coach that helped them develop the most and what was their
advice.
I also plan to create additional short form content based around more complex ideas of
ultimate whether that would be anaylzing different offenses and defenses and explaining how
and why they work, explaining different cuts and when/how to use them affectively, and
creating quick guides on the advanced throws of ultimate more so explaining when to throw
them and how effective it can be rather than explaining how to throw them like I will be doing
with the basic throws.
By the end of it I want to have atleast 5 videos posted on my youtube channel with two long
form videos and the rest being short form videos.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and

skills you will need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to
access/learn all of the resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail
your plans.

For video creation I will use capcut for my editing software because it’s the editing app Im the
most comfortable with and have experience using. I have various technology I could use to
edit my videos whether that would be from my ipad, my computer, or my phone.
I have connections to a ton of high level players and coaches that I can reach out to for my
interviews and in terms of making highlight reels for certain players I can go to their games
and scrimmages in order to get film.

2
Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will
you need to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you?
What is your plan to access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this
project?
In terms of finding a metor I have a ton of people I can choose from to guide me accordingly. I
can reach out to Pros who also create similar style of content I’m aiming for. For something
more accessible I would be able to reach out to one of my previous coaches whether that
would be from club or previous school teams. I could also attempt to find a mentor experience
in video creation and editing to make sure im publishing high good quality content, who could
also give me tips on any troubles I'm having in creating the videos.

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

I think I’ll have troubles in having good quality visuals for my videos as I plan to record on my
phone with tripod stand. Also I have trouble presenting infront of people, which is a personal
obstacle I have to endure when publsihing these videos.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about
your project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.
