Reading is one of the most essential skills that a 21st century learner should primarily develop and learn.

This skill is very important in developing literacy among learners which is needed in the new generation
of learners. In today's global situation, learners in primary grades are suffering much because they still
need to learn how to read. And it can only be addressed by a full time teacher. But in this case, since
most of the schools are adopting modular and online distance learning it is impossible to make it this
way. Learners are receiving a lack of guidance because teachers cannot teach or practice the reading
skills of their students because of restrictions. This is a very challenging situation because we cannot
control the growth of these young learners eventhough they still lack their reading and comprehension
skills. Therefore, as a future teacher and as a parent at the same time, I believe that I can make a way to
help these learners at least exercise their reading skills at home. That is why I propose to have a home
tutorials for children. Through this we can make a huge difference as we all know that parents and
families are the most important educators in a child’s life – even more important than their teachers –
and it is never too early to start reading together.

In this connection, tutoring programs can help children develop study and learning skills that will help
set up them for success for his or her entire life. There are many advantages of tutoring services such as
Individual and unique learning experience, one-on-one attention, improves academic performance,
Improves attitude towards learning and school, encourages self-paced and self-directed learning,
improves self-esteem and confidence, improves work and study habits, positive work space, encourages
independence and responsibility, helps overcome learning obstacles, improves social and behavioural
skills, building vocabulary and understanding and many more. Indeed, tutoring can be a best way to
address the reading difficulties of primary learners as we move forward from the life-changing effects of
this pandemic.

Tutoring services will help your child become a better communicator, form better relationships with
peers, and make more positive social and behavioural adjustments.

Building vocabulary and understanding

Learning to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out what is printed on the page.
Through hearing stories, children are exposed to a wide range of words. This helps them build their own
vocabulary and improve their understanding when they listen, which is vital as they start to read. It is
important for them to understand how stories work too. Even if your child does not understand every
word, they will hear new sounds, words and phrases which they can then try out, copying what they
have heard.

Irrespective of whether your child is only just beginning to learn to read or whether they are fluent, you
can play an important role in helping to keep them interested in books. Find out what interests them,
help them to find books that will be engaging and fun, and spend time reading the books they bring
home from school together.
Why are tutorials important?

Tutorials are often designed as smaller groups or classes that are led by a TA or graduate student.
Tutorials are often not optional because they give you an opportunity to delve deeper into concepts,
and attendance may contribute to your participation mark!

Tutorials are important for your learning because you can:

Ask your TA questions and get clarification

Work through exercises, discussion topics and concepts that will enhance your understanding of the
lecture material

Solve problems in a team, develop your group skills, and get to know your peers better (which may
come in handy when picking group members for group projects)

Prepare for and/or review midterms and exams

Clarify any concepts that you might not understand

Practice presentations (public speaking)

Learn to respectfully present counterarguments and cope with conflict/constructive criticism

HOW DOES TUTORING HELP STUDENTS?

There are many reasons parents choose tutoring for their children. Some parents feel unable to help
their children with schoolwork. Others may find their children are more receptive to working through
school struggles with another person. Tutoring can help strengthen subject comprehension, boost
confidence, and build important learning skills.
Tutoring gives students individualized attention that they don’t get in a crowded classroom. This helps
children who struggle to keep up, as well as those who aren’t challenged enough. It also keeps students
on track during breaks from school, such as during March Break, or during the summer.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TUTORING?

Tutoring programs can help your child develop study and learning skills that will help set up your child
for success for his or her entire life. There are many advantages of tutoring services:

Individual and unique learning experience

Your child will receive an individualized learning experience he or she can’t always get in a classroom
setting. Tutors can customize the lessons and activities just for your child.

One-on-one attention

Tutors get to know your child’s individual learning style and can adapt teaching methods accordingly.
They act as your child’s own private teacher.

Improves academic performance

Tutoring will prepare your child for tests and exams, while tutors work with your child on specific
problem areas. Your child’s grades and understanding of the subject will significantly improve when
working with a tutor.

Improves attitude towards learning and school

Learning will become fun for your child. With constant encouragement and praise, your child will no
longer feel overwhelmed or frustrated with school.
Encourages self-paced and self-directed learning

With tutoring, your child will learn to take the initiative his or her school work. Your child will also learn
how to control the learning pace.

Improves self-esteem and confidence

Your child’s self-esteem and confidence will increase through tutoring, by providing him or her with the
resources and skills he or she needs to excel in school.

Improves work and study habits

Through tutoring, your child will learn work and study habits he or she will use for life. These skills will
help prepare your child to successfully achieve his or her goals both inside and outside of school.

Positive work space

Tutoring provides an environment free of distractions, with fewer students and disruptions around so
your child is better able to focus on learning.

Encourages independence and responsibility

Your child will gain the ability to do school work on his or her own, without your help. Your child will
realize his or her own personal growth and will learn to take responsibilities for his or her studies.

Helps overcome learning obstacles

Your child’s tutor will specifically target whichever aspect of learning he or she is having troubles with,
whether it’s writing, math, language, or reading.

Encourages the freedom to ask questions

At school, your child may not always feel comfortable asking questions in front of his or her peers.
Tutoring will help teach your child to be comfortable asking questions, big or small, without feeling self-
conscious.

Improves social and behavioural skills

Tutoring services will help your child become a better communicator, form better relationships with
peers, and make more positive social and behavioural adjustments.

Increases ability to manage one’s learning

Your child will become more competent in his or her learning and more successful in managing his or
her school work.

Why is reading so important?

Studies show that reading for pleasure makes a big difference to children’s educational performance.
Likewise, evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in
reading tests than those who do not, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general
knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures.

In fact, reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their
social or economic background.

What difference can I make as a parent?

You can make a huge difference! Parents are the most important educators in a child’s life – even more
important than their teachers – and it is never too early to start reading together.

Even before they were born, babies learn to recognise their parents' voices. Reading to your baby from
birth, even for just a few minutes a day, gives them the comfort of hearing your voice and increases
their exposure to language.

Building vocabulary and understanding

Learning to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out what is printed on the page.
Through hearing stories, children are exposed to a wide range of words. This helps them build their own
