Course Objective
The main objective is to provide basic understanding of the subject of Banking to the students. After
undergoing this term, the students will have a fair knowledge on different aspects of banking and its
functions (deposits and lending) in detail, its role in the economy and also a broad overview of the
regulatory environment in India. This course will also cover technological development in banks, green
banking and briefly covers the different committees on banking in India. Apart from primary functions of
banks (deposits and lending) other miscellaneous and ancillary functions will also be taught.

Session 1-2
Topic: Indian Banking System: Origin of Banking, Structure of Indian Banking, NBFCs &
Functions of Banks.

Quizzes
There will be two surprise quizzes conducted, i.e. first during Pre-Mid Term and second during Post-Mid
Term.

Assignments
There will be one assignment on group basis. The names of the group members and topics will be
announced in the class. The group members are expected to visit a branch of any scheduled bank and in
evidence thereof they will attach the visiting card and a brochure to the assignment paper. The topics will
relate to the deposits, ancillary services and advances. The assignment will cover the broad profile of the
bank and the branch in addition to the observations on banking services rendered.
