Introduction
In this essay the writer gives an overview of the documentary Hypothesis, the sources within it,
the reason it was developed and if it has achieved its main purpose.
Documentary Hypothesis
The Documentary Hypothesis is a theory which is meant to explain the origins of the Pentateuch.
The Pentateuch are the first five books in the Bible which are: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus,
Numbers and Deuteronomy. The word derives from the Hebrew word which means five scrools
hence the first five books. The Documnetary Hypothesis is also known as the JEPD theory.
The first five books were known and believed to be written by Moses. The tradition honours Moses
because of his esteemed position as lawgiver and friend of God. Centuries later, different scholars
realized that those first five books have some inconsistency and duplications. They also noticed that
there is no way Moses could have written about his own death. After realizing that, they formed the
best way to explain the various inconsistencies and duplications in the Pentateuch is to assume that the
books are an edited version of different original sources.
