most seriously injured in an accident that
occurred last year. According to doctors,
he is in the comatose stage and may no
longer be conscious. But it is possible to
extend his life through a life support
system. It will take a large amount of
their family to keep Billy alive, but their
family was not rich. Thus, their family
decided not to use a life support system

since they didn't want to prolong Billy's
agony.

3. You were walking home from work late

at night. When you reached the dark part
of the alley, someone grabbed you, and
you felt a sharp object pointing at your
back. Because of feeling overwhelmed
by your emotions, you quickly turned
around, swiftly grabbing the knife and
stabbing the kidnapper without
hesitation.

1. How did you feel about the activity?
2. What did you consider as your basis or

3. How do you apply the reasons that you
mentioned in your own life?

● ISSUES THAT VIOLATES
RESPECT FOR LIFE
MURDER is the voluntary and unjust killing
of the human being. This may be performed
by act or by omission. By act, it means that
the person does the unjust killing by doing it.
By omission, a person did not do anything
when someone is being killed or near death.
Example:
● By Act - Killing someone using a weapon
(knife, gun/rifle, hammer, etc.)

7
● By Omission - Not doing anything when
someone is being killed or near death

What law prohibits killing someone?

Revised Penal Code Art. 248. Murder. —
Any person who, not falling within the
provisions of Article 246 shall kill another,
shall be guilty of murder and shall be
punished by reclusion temporal in its
maximum period to death, if committed with
any of the following attendant circumstances:

● With treachery - taking advantage of

superior strength
● In consideration of a price, reward, or
promise
● By means of inundation, fire, poison, etc

ABORTION
- is the expulsion of the fetus from the
maternal womb, spontaneously or
induced, causing the death of the
fetus.
- It is known as a procedure that uses
medicine or surgery to remove the
embryo or fetus and placenta from the
uterus.
What law prohibits killing someone?
Revised Penal Code:

Art. 256. Intentional abortion. — Any

person who shall intentionally cause an
abortion

Art. 257. Unintentional abortion. — The

penalty of prision correccional in its
minimum and medium period shall be
imposed upon any person who shall cause an
abortion by violence, but unintentionally.

Art. 258. Abortion practiced by the woman

herself of by her parents.

Art. 259. Abortion practiced by a physician

or midwife and dispensing of abortives.

8
Stance on Abortion:
● Pro-life
- The goal of reproduction (pro-
creation) will be thwarted because
abortion prevents them from
surviving.
- “From the first moment of his
existence, a human being must be
recognized as having the rights of
a person - among which is the
inviolable right of every innocent
being to life”

● Pro-choice
- There is a situation where a woman
becomes pregnant because of a
case of rape or incest. In this
situation, the woman is reminded
of the trauma of what happened to
her. There are studies that children
who have been the result of rape or
incest have a high chance of being
abuse.
- Everyone has the basic human
right to decide when and whether
to have children.

SUICIDE is the deliberate taking of one’s

own life. It is murdering oneself.

According to PSA (Philippine Statistics

Authority), death caused by 'intentional self-
harm' has increased by 57.3% in 2020, due to
the pandemic which resulted in Filipinos
losing their jobs. From 2,810 deaths in 2019,
it increased by 4,420 deaths in 2020.

9
Cases of self-harm emerge in times of crisis
when people break down in dealing with
crises in life—financial instability, end of
relationships and illnesses.

EUTHANASIA, also known as mercy Technology
killing, is a direct termination of life of a Integration
person due to an incurable illness. CANVA
● Active euthanasia: killing a patient
by active means, for example, https://www.canva.c
injecting a patient with a lethal dose om/design/DAE6up
of a drug. Sometimes called HJGTs/shfyiiMHrI0

● Passive euthanasia: intentionally paign=designshare&

ventilator or feeding tube. Some
ethicists distinguish between
withholding life support and
withdrawing life support (the patient
is on life support but then removed
from it).

● Voluntary euthanasia: with the

consent of the patient.

● Involuntary euthanasia: without the

Abstraction
consent of the patient, for example, if
the patient is unconscious and his or
her wishes are unknown.. The person
wants to live but is killed anyway.
This is usually murder but not always.

● Nonvoluntary euthanasia involves

someone else making the decision to
end someone’s life. A close family
member usually makes the decision.
This is generally done when someone
is completely unconscious or
permanently incapacitated. It usually
involves passive euthanasia, such as
withdrawing life support from
someone who’s showing no signs of
brain activity. The person cannot
make a decision or cannot make their
wishes known.

UNJUST MUTILATION is the destruction

of bodily parts when neither public nor

11
private safety demands it. It is harming
oneself. It is a violation of his/her right to
bodily integrity or well being.

What law prohibits killing someone?

Revised Penal Code:

Art. 262. Mutilation. — The penalty of

reclusion temporal to reclusion perpetua shall
be imposed upon any person who shall
intentionally mutilate another by depriving
him, either totally or partially, or some
essential organ of reproduction.

Any other intentional mutilation shall be

punished by prision mayor in its medium and
maximum periods.

E.g
● Female genital mutilation
● Male genital mutilation
(Transsexual/Body Modification)

WAR is a state conflict between two

sovereign nations carried on by force of
arms.
E.g
● Marawi War
● Ukraine-Russia War

● WHEN IS IT LAWFUL TO TAKE A

LIFE?

Taking life is lawful in case of self-defense,

heroic death and just war.

Self-defense is the act of defending oneself

causing the death of an unjust aggressor.

Heroic death is endangering one’s life or

health for the sake of God or other people in
order to gain heavenly favor.

War is just when it is undertaken for a right

case; for instance, the independence of the

12
nation. A just war is offensive when the
attack is made in order to enforce a right. It is
defensive when it is resistance to unjust
attack made or menaced by an enemy.

● WHY DO PEOPLE SIN AGAINST

LIFE?

Some people sin against life because of

pride, envy, avarice, or on interplay of
those

People of pride recognize no authority other

than themselves. They protect their own glory
at all costs. It is his/her life. Without it his/her
life is worthless and meaningless.

Envy makes the person feel unhappy for the

good of and in others. Envy develops to
hatred then anger, making them capable of
hurting others or taking their lives.

Avarice is a form of obsession to things or

persons. It is the inordinate wanting of people
or things. Avaricious people feel no
contentment and satisfaction. They take all
the means to have what they want.

● WHAT SHOULD BE OUR

ATTITUDE TOWARD THOSE
PEOPLE WHO COMMIT THOSE
SINS?
The Christian attitude we should have toward
those people who commit the crime of
murder, induced abortion, direct suicide, and
euthanasia is love, mercy, and forgiveness.

Our Lord Jesus Christ calls us to “Love one

another as I have loved you.” (John 15: 12).
Forgiveness does not mean forgetting. It
means keeping no grudges and letting them
make reparation for their sins.
