WEEKLY LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS
Science 7, Quarter 3, Week 4.1

WAVES

Name: Section:

Learning Objective

Infer that waves carry energy. (S7LT-IIIc-4).

Sub-tasks:

1. Identify the types of a wave;

2. Explain how waves carry energy; and
3. Cite examples of types of mechanical and electromagnetic waves encounter in our daily
life.
Time allotment: 4 hours

Key Concepts

 Wave is the propagation of disturbance through a medium in which energy is transferred.

 A wave pulse is a sample disturbance, while a wave train is a series of disturbances created
in a medium.
 Vibration causes a wave motion. Wave motion is an energy propagation using t h e
motion of a change in the medium rather than the medium itself.
 A transverse wave is a type of wave in which particles of the medium move in a direction
perpendicular to the direction of the wave’s movement.
 A longitudinal wave is another type of wave in which particles of the medium move in a
direction parallel to the direction of the wave.
 A mechanical wave is a type of wave that is not capable of transmitting energy through
a vacuum. It needs a material such as solid, liquid, or gas to transport its energy from one
location to another. Examples of mechanical waves are earthquakes, tsunami, sounds, air,
and water. Surface waves are mechanical waves that propagate along with the interface
between differing media such as ocean waves.
 An electromagnetic wave is a type of wave that can transmit energy even without any
material medium. They can pass through space. Examples of EM waves are Radio, Microwave,
Infrared, Visible Light, Ultraviolet, X-ray, and Gamma-ray.
 Compression is the section of the longitudinal wave where the particles are crowded
together; while the section where the particles are less crowded is called rarefaction.
 Medium is the means through which the waves travel from one point to another.
 The crest is the highest point of a wave, while the lowest point is called a trough.
 Amplitude is the maximum distance covered by a particle from its resting position.
 Frequency is the number of waves passing through a given point during one second. The
unit of frequency is the number of cycles per second or hertz (Hz).
 Wavelength is the length of a complete cycle. It is a measure of the distance between a
crest and the adjacent crest, or a trough and the adjacent trough.
 Wave speed is the distance traveled by the wave per second. It is a product of frequency
and wavelength expressed in meters per second.
 In water waves, energy is transferred through the vibration of the water particles.
In electromagnetic waves, energy is transferred through vibrations of electric and
magnetic fields.

Exercises / Activities:

Activity 1: Make My Wave

What you need:

adhesive tape
colored ribbon
empty can
hand gloves
paper and pen
radio
rope at least 5meters long
stick

What to do:

1. Put on the hand gloves and try to make a wave at someone. Then, answer guide question
number 1.
2. Tie one end of the rope on a fixed object like your table, post, doorknob, etc. Attached a
colored ribbon on one part of the rope. You can use adhesive tape to fix the ribbon. Then,
make a wave by moving the rope continuously with a quick up and down movement of your
hand. Answer guide question number 2.
3. Place an empty can on the top of a table, then strike it with a stick twice or thrice. Observe
what happen. Answer guide question number 3.
4. Turn on your FM radio. Observed what happen. Answer guide question numbers 4-5.

Guide Questions:

1. What is the movement of your hand?

2. What type of wave is produced as you moved the rope up and down?

3. What does it produce? What type of wave is it?

4. What have you observed as you tune in to your FM radio?

5. What type of EM wave is responsible for getting this communication signal?

Activity 2: That’s The Way You Move It!

What you need:

a basin filled with water

paper boat
paper and pen
three (3) pieces of medium size stones
What to do:

1. Place a basin filled with water on top of the table. Wait for the water to become still.
2. Place the small boat on the water. Wait for the water to become still.
3. Once the water is still, drop one medium size stone. Observe what happen.
4. Then drop the second and third medium stones. Observe what happen.

Guide Questions:

1. What happens to the water when you dropped the medium size stone?

2. What happens to the paper boat as you dropped the stone?

3. What happens when you dropped the second and third stones?

4. How does the wave in the water produce?

5. What happens to the energy exerted by the stone?

Activity 3. Pick and Paste

What you need:

extra bond paper

glue
paper and pen
scissors
three (3) example pictures of an electromagnetic wave
three (3) example pictures of a mechanical wave

School/Station: Calamba National High School
Division: Cabadbaran City
email address: pattyjane.minguito@deped.gov.ph
What to do:

1. Find some pictures from an old magazine or brochure that you think is an example of
a mechanical wave and an electromagnetic wave that you encounter in your life.
2. Once you find the pictures that you need, cut them and set them aside.
3. On a separate bond paper, write your name, grade, section, and school. Under the name
of your school leave some spaces so that you can write the two types of waves. (See
sample below)
4. Paste the 3 examples of pictures in each type of wave that you cut and label them
accordingly.
5. Once you are done, answer the guide questions below.

Name: Grade & Section:

School:

Guide Questions:

1. Aside from the pictures that you have chosen, what other examples of
mechanical and electromagnetic waves you observe in your daily living?

2. What do you think is the most destructive type of mechanical wave?

3. What type of electromagnetic wave is useful in the field of medicine?

Reflection

The global pandemic changes the life of many people. The things that we used to do
are now limited. Every time we do something, we must act with precautions and follow
health protocols for our safety. The life that we used to live is not anymore normal. With
the advent of technology, global updates are seen and heard through t h e internet.
Electronic gadgets such as cellphones and laptops still keep us going as we can continuously
communicate with the people around us. Medical equipment and tools also use this time
to detect disease-causing bacteria and viruses. These are made possible through the presence
of different types of waves.
In your point of view, draw a picture that shows how society benefits from these
types of waves (mechanical or electromagnetic waves) in this time of the pandemic. A rubric is
provided below to rate your output.
