SUMMARY

Therapeutic communication is a purposeful interaction between health professionals and patients


that helps achieve positive health outcomes. The study aimed to determine the effective
implementation of therapeutic communications and its predictors. To improve patients’
satisfaction towards nursing care researchers must identify factors influencing the effective
implementation of therapeutic communication between nurses and patients. Institution based
cross sectional study was conducted at Simma University specialized hospital from March 21 to
April 9 2016. In the study 192 admitted patients participated obtaining a response rate of 96
percent.
The study revealed 33.9 percent of the nurses had low level of therapeutic communication. This
implies that the communication skills they acquired through education was no adequate which
could be related to lack of recurrent training of therapeutic communication techniques.
Patients’ communication with nurses is directly influenced by their educational status. Patients
who have no formal education have lowered opacity of obtaining and processing basic health
information.
The presence of patient’s visitor affected the nurse. Patient communication, which can be due to
socio-cultural, socio-economic and area difference.
Patients believed gender difference affected therapeutic communication. This might be related to
the community culture and belief. Regarding available time for care, patients admitted agreed
that it affects therapeutic communication. Nurse lack of time influences the relationship. This
discrepancy might be due to a difference in the workload or nurses.
Part 3: Significant Learnings
1. Therapeutic communication is a central element of the nurse patient interaction which
helps to achieve positive health outcomes.
2. An essential nursing skill is providing care by showing concern and supporting the
patient with a good word.
3. Ineffective communication is reported as a significant factor in medical errors and causes
patient’s harm.
Part 4: Application of Significant Learnings
1. An example of therapeutic nursing communication is when the nurse while performing
her tasks also communicates with the patients and asks the patients if they have concerns
or questions.
2. Nurses should speak in a congenial and welcoming manner and indicate through body
language that the patients’ viewpoints are respected.
3. Nurses can review with the patient and folk’s instructions about medicines

1. Development of educational curriculum about therapeutic communication is needed in all
specialization and practices
2. Health systems should aim at creating competent and responsible health professionals
3. With high level of therapeutic communications, high quality once can be delivered
recurrent training for therapeutic techniques should be done.
