College of Western Idaho Lesson Plan Template

Name Date
Tatijana Strange-Garasa March 2022 (exact date TBD)

Subject/Grade Topic
Math 6th Surface Area of 3D Shapes

The big idea(s) or essential question(s)

An introduction to surface area and nets to help students better understand a

larger range of calculations for ISAT and 7th grade math prep.

State of Idaho and/or common core standards addressed

6.G.A.1
6.G.A.4

Objectives
(what the students will be able to do as a result of the lesson)
Students will be able to calculate the surface area of a 3d shape using nets.
Students will be able to apply this knowledge to “real-world” situations
Students will be able to match 3D shapes to their nets

TSWBAT
Calculate the surface area of a 3D shape using Nets

TSWBAT
Use knowledge of 3D shapes and nets to apply calculations to real-world
examples

Materials and/or technology Needed

Cereal or cardboard box and a few other “real-world” props/examples
Smart Board
Paper Nets of common 3D shapes

Activities/procedures (include anticipated time for each)

Introduction/activator
Discuss what a Net is/ ask what the students think a net is. Use cardboard box
as an example

I will also start with a quick review/bell work problem about shape areas

Class activities Class activities

(what you/students will do) (why you will do them)
 Go over the definition of a Net  Help with the beginning of
thinking in a 3D space
 Determine how to find the nets  Help to identify shapes when in
of 3D shapes Net form

 Go over how to create a  Help with critical thinking and

formula/calculation for surface connecting concepts. Also, ISAT
area and 7th grade math Prep

 Worksheets/math book/Google  For practice of concepts

classroom

Closure/reminders

Nets help us find all sorts of things that are useful in our everyday lives. By
understanding how nets connect to 3D shapes, we can better understand how
to find surface area for all sorts of projects.

Assessment
(how you will know students met the objectives - include rubrics)
Later in the week I will be returning to the classroom to do a practical
application of the math and go over some uses for the concept.
Students will also fill out an assessment that the teacher I am observing has for
them.
Accommodations/differentiation
I am not 100% familiar with the accommodations that may be needed for
certain students, or if there are any at all. I plan on mostly having my lesson be
lead through question and answer of the students, letting them set the pace to
an extent, and changing explanation technique as I go.

Reflection/evaluation
(after lesson is taught put your reflections here)
This lesson will be taught some time in March. I will update my reflections here
once I get there.
