STANDARDS: PS: 1.2.2, 1.2.1, 1.2.3

MATERIALS:

 Note Cards with each scenario written on it


 Colorful paper – Honesty Pledge
 Markers
 Colored Pencils

ACTIVITY:

1. Tell students today you will be discussing an important trait honesty.


2. Ask students the following questions
a. What does honesty mean? (to be truthful, to not lie, to not cheat, or steal)
b. Why is honesty important? (It is the right thing to do. So others can trust you.)
c. What are the consequences of being dishonest? (You could lose someone’s respect. You
could lose their trust. You may have consequences or lose something.)
d. Can you tell me some qualities of an honest person? (They do not lie. They do not cheat or
steal. People can trust them. Keeps their word.)
Scenarios – Group Discussion
3. Pass out cards with different scenarios on them so students can discuss. Make sure each group has
3 – 4 students in each group.
4. Each group will discuss the following question.
a. How can you demonstrate the trait honesty in the following situation?
5. Person number 1 will read the card to the group. Person number 2 will answer the card. Person
number 3/4 will share if they agree or disagree with their group member’s response and why.
Then rotate the cards to the next person.
a. Possible scenarios (How can you demonstrate the trait honesty in the following situation?)
i. The cashier only charges you for 2 candy bars when you really should have been
charged for 3.
ii. You find a $10 dollar bill in a library book at school.
iii. A friend wants to copy your answers during your math test.
iv. You promised a friend you would hang out with them after school, but you also
promised your mom that you would clean your room after school.
v. At the store, you see a friend put something in her pocket without paying for it.
vi. A classmate has lost her favorite pencil, and you saw another student with the exact
same pencil that she had describe.
Honesty Activity – Honesty Pledge
1. Ask the students to write their own honesty pledge. This is the student's promise to always be
truthful in their words and actions. After they have finished writing, students can decorate and
sign their pledge.
Closing
1. Ask students the following questions
a. What does honesty mean? (to be truthful, to not lie, to not cheat, or steal)
b. Why is honesty important? (It is the right thing to do. So others can trust you.)
c. What are the consequences of being dishonest? (You could lose someone’s respect. You
could lose their trust. You may have consequences or lose something.)
d. Can you tell me some qualities of an honest person? (They do not lie. They do not cheat or
steal. People can trust them. Keeps their word.)
2. Remind students to always tell the truth - it's the right thing to do. Your family and friends will respect
you for it.

EVALUATION: The evaluation will be based off what the students say in the discussions, the participation
in the game, and any summaries that are submitted. Questions embedded in the lesson provide an
informal assessment along the way.
