Topic B: Employee Retention in U.S. & Canada
1. Introduction

Covid-19, two words that nobody knew approximately one and a half years ago, but today we all

know. The covid-19 pandemic has hit us all with force in all respects. But, just as this pandemic

closed millions of doors, it also opened doors for many people. According to Angel Bermudez,

the coronavirus hit employment with a brutal force. Due to this, governments, companies, and

workers had to find a way to adapt to keep the economy going. (2021).

2. Main Message

The world has changed in various aspects, be it social, economic, educational, and more.

However, despite living a pandemic in which nothing is yet certain, life must go on. Why did this

happen? Each circumstance in life should try to find the positive side, this pandemic taught us

many things, but it depends on each of us how to take it.

3. Talking Points

3.1 Understand why employees are leaving

3.1.1 Percentage

It has been heard in many places that more than 41% of workers worldwide are

thinking of leaving their jobs very soon. (Fleming, 2021)

3.1.2 Reasons

As pandemic life progresses, a large percentage of people are considering leaving

their current jobs in search of more money, more flexibility, and more happiness.

(Hsu, 2021)

3.1.3 Pros and Cons

Burnout and a lack of growth opportunities drove the change in workers; a great

benefit is that people know the value of what they deserve. A disadvantage is that

many companies are running out of staff for not valuing their work. (Dickler, 2021)

3.2 Retain employees

3.2.1 Importance

Apart from the rotation expenses, legal paperwork, review of resumes, interviews and

more. Each loss of a worker to a company can generate long-term losses, and even

more so when we are talking that a large percentage wants to resign after the

pandemic. (Bamboo, 2019)

3.2.2 How to improve it

Investing in the tranquility and improvement of the assets that are the employees of a

company is the most important thing for the retention of its workers. (Stange, 2021)

3.3 Methodologies for retaining employees

3.3.1 Conducting Exit Interviews

It is the feedback that can improve the organization's development and avoid the loss

of additional employees. (Heathfield, 2019). Beth emphasizes to us the importance of

this interview for the improvement of any organization and that to know their errors

or losses, they must increase this type of interview. (2019)

3.3.2 Implementation of new amenities or benefits

It is important to emphasize that in an article in Bridge for Billions, Julie Murat

emphasizes that after this great pandemic, workers not only look for a workplace due

to the economic factor, but they also look for a workplace that encompasses other

dimensions. Has the workplace changed after this pandemic? Yes, of course it has
changed a lot. As a manager or business owner, you need to speak directly and

honestly with workers.

3.3.3 Create more effective communication with workers

According to statistics, 57% of employees report that they are not given clear

instructions and 69% of managers do not feel comfortable communicating with

employees in general. These results indicate a lack of work communication that can

lead to misunderstandings or lack of work. (Kashyap, 2019)

Conclusions

In the last year and a half, all people around the world have had to witness a pandemic

that completely changed our lives. Focusing on the work environment has been very

difficult and that is why companies must improve and grow their methodology for the

retention of workers.
