Find your passion

Being able to walk into a hospital and get help is something that you couldn’t do

back then everything we’ve built in the medical field, we can assure you that you will get

the best treatment. It was a special day at my Uncle’s house, we were celebrating

Thanksgiving and my cousins pulled me to the side to ask what I wanted to do in the

future, this is where everything opened up to me. They all taught me what people go

through in the medical field, and from there I was dedicated to make this my future.

Trying my absolute hardest to save people is something that I want to do in the future

eeing people in pain brings pain upon me, and the only thing that I want to do from there

is assist them to live their life how they always did. Putting myself in a hospital almost

everyday of my life is something that I want to do, waking up everyday to a beeping

hallway and a room full of patients. Having loved ones in a hospital can definitely bring

stress and anxiety on a family, but knowing that there are people who are well suited for

treating people alleviates that stress, and I want people to look at me in that way,

because my patients will be in good hands. Learning about the body is something that I

want to do as well. Looking into the anatomy of the body blows me away, and I want to

educate myself as much as I can.

Being a little kid I had no clue that I was going to get into this field, but ever since

my cousins pulled me to the side to talk to me, a door opened in my future and I’m going

to walk through it and pursue it. All of this dedication wouldn’t be here if I

wasn’t at my Uncle’s house on that day. What they told me really made me motivated to

become more like them, maybe even better. My cousin Jenny was telling me stories

about all their previous patients who came back to visit and thank them. I am aware that

working in a hospital is not all butterflies and sunflowers. There are people who despise

nurses, doctors and the hospital itself, but for me and nurses, our goal in working in the

medical field is to get all patients healthy, healed, and discharged. “Knowing that I helped

a patient and they’re thankful for it, that's all I want.” When my cousin Jenny told me

about this I knew in the future I wanted to do the exact same. There many jobs outside

of the medical field where you save people or help them recover to who they used to be,

which is why I want to pursue a career in a hospital.

A majority of my family is part of the medical field. Talking with my Uncle Ven, he

was telling me about the strengths that I need to have physically and most importantly,

mentally. I urged myself that I will get hurt, I vividly remember him telling me, “Sure you

need to be able to be on your feet all day, which is hard for some, but what’s harder is

your patient passing away. It’s not easy but it is something that you will be signing up for,

so strengthen yourself now.” Of course I wasn’t in shock, lives are lost in hospitals, but it

did make me think about how connected you can get with your patients and it did

sadden me hat made me get over this barrier was acknowledging the fact that I tried my

best to save this person, always giving my 110%, and if their life was lost then it was

simply their time. My Uncle was also telling me medical terms that I have never heard of,

to some people this might be something that is useless, but I found it extremely

interesting to be in a hospital and make these callouts for their coworkers to work

together. I learned a couple terms and I was a little proud of it example code yellow

means that there is a patient on the way to the

Reyes 3
emergency room. Hospitals have such coding to help the rest of the hospital on what

needs clearing, help, and attention. The human body I find to be interesting and

fascinating to learn about, but also I like learning about how it is to work in the medical

field. Studying the whole body requires multiple terms, teamwork to get the job done,

and time. The medical field is a hard study that requires full attention. If you ever walk

into a hospital you will instantly notice that there are multiple things going on whether it’s

nurses or doctors.

Now that I have all of this motivation to get into the medical field I had to get

some experience. It was the same visit where my cousins were talking to me, two days

later they handed me things that I have never seen before, one of them was called a

sphygmomanometer a device that doctors use on your back to listen to your lungs or

your heartbeat. I was told to put it on the pocket of your elbow and make sure it’s on the

major artery, then we get a blowup sleeve that goes on their arm and we pump it up.

From there it was a whole lot to take in, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sometimes it was

harder to find the artery and sometimes it was the easiest thing ever. Once I was

consistent with finding the artery and pumping it to the right number, I then let go of the

pressure and paid close attention to the sleeve as it slowly started to lose air is a

specific time in the dial where it starts clicking up and down two times going in bursts,

and when it jerks those numbers are your beats per minute for your heart. It was a

handful to remember, especially because of these things have to be precise, and it is

easy to overthink things and fly past more important things, but I got the hang of it pretty

quickly, and I even went and practiced with my family. It was interesting to see how a

person’s beats per minute can vary between each person. I even took notes of

everyone’s beats per minute to see how much it will change next time I see them. I knew

that I loved what I was doing when I was getting in depth about

Reyes 4
everything and taking notes about all of my family members, normally I would never do

this, but I wanted to do this to anyone that I saw I had the urge to try other things that

were available to me and I did have other things for me to use. My Uncle Ven is diabetic,

so he has a glucose meter to check his insulin every single day. He handed it to me and

said to stab him on the stomach to get a drop of blood, this blood was then inserted into

the machine to get accurate results of your insulin levels, if they are low then you need to

eat sugar or take a shot of insulin, but if they're high you would need to take a shot to

even out your insulin levels. The shot wasn’t a syringe, it was more of like a pen with a

tiny needle of insulin in it, I was told to put the pen to his stomach and press the button,

and that’s exactly what I did, at the time I was worried because I didn’t want to hurt him,

but he has to do this everyday so I did what I had to do. This whole California trip meant

so much to me, I learned so much and I found my passion within a week, a lot of the

things that I did made me want to pursue the medical d even more, and if I were in a

hospital surrounded with these things then I feel like I would fit perfectly in that setting.

From here I am taking my own time to learn more about medications, diseases,

and how the human body works. I have a notebook on some things that I find interesting.

Whenever I learn something interesting about the body I put it down in my notebook so I

can expand my vocabulary. One of my favorite ways to learn things is from youtube,

these things and scenarios are taught on youtube and it gives personal experiences that

other nurses have been through, so not only does it teach me things but it prepares me

even more for the future that I am aiming for. Another way of me learning medical terms

is from my family most of them being in a hospital, they have been through everything to

get there, so they are sharing valuable information to

Reyes 5
me and teaching me about things that I would’ve never found if it for them. There are

days where I look back at my notes and I give myself a little pat on the back.

There are a lot of complex things that the body does on a daily basis, and being able to

know how these things work really gives me hope for the future. There is also

another reason of why taking notes motivate me, and that is because these notes push

me closer to becoming what I want to be, it is pushing me to keep on going so I can

finally use all of this knowledge to help a random patient, a person that I’ve never seen

before, and a person that I want to help recover physically and mentally. These notes to

me serve more of a purpose than writing on a paper, these words are building my future,

slowly but surely. Of course I love learning about the body and everything that they use,

but all of this is because I want to help people live their lives to their greatest potential.

To this day I am still educating myself about the human body and how it is in the

medical field. I know that I am only one year away from going to college to pursue what I

love. All in all, this all happened to me because I found something that I truly wanted to

do, being dedicated to something and putting my all into it. Finding your passion can

truly change your life, and it may not come to you super soon, but when it does, put your

110 percent into it.
