TASK-01

Teacher isn’t born to ‘Just Teach’

Wilma DeCastro is a 28-year-old English teacher at Kennedy High School. She
began working there six years ago. She was named ‘Teacher of the Year’ not only
because she was popular, but also because she inspired several students to start a
literary magazine that has won a dozen prizes. It was today that she resigned.

In her own words, DeCastro said, "I have wanted to be a teacher all my life."
"I've really enjoyed it, however I have two little girls now and I can't afford it
anymore. As much as I want to provide my family with a decent life, we can't
afford a decent house, a new car, nice clothing, and so many other things. We cut
corners on everything, even food."

While on vacation three years ago, DeCastro started selling real estate. Her real
estate business has continued to be part-time over the last year, mainly at
weekends.

She said, "I can't keep doing it anymore."

“It's impossible for me to hold two jobs and do well at both of them, as well as take
care of my daughters at the same time, so I'm going into real estate full time. In a
couple of years, I should be able to triple my salary if I work hard. At some point, I
want to start my own business."

"Of course we're sorry to see her go," said Greg Hubbard, superintendent of
the city's school system. “We want to keep her so we can pay more to all of our
teachers, especially to the best. Unfortunately, we do not have the money to pay
higher salaries. No one wants to pay higher taxes.”
